A Halloween Adventure in Autism (11/7) Prayer Request for Catie (p.129)

Happy Birthday, Billy!

You're right; where HAS the time gone? My friends and I were just talking about that at lunch the other day. "Can you believe we're going to be SENIORS in a few months?" "We are?! Weren't we just Freshmen??" It's really hitting us that this next year is It. We won't be together anymore, and we won't be at our school anymore. It's kinda bittersweet.

Anyway, good luck on the job hunt to you and Ed!

Happy Birthday Billy!! :bday:

I really hope things pick up speed on the job search front for both you & Ed. I know how much you want to find another job. :goodvibes

Hey Gang!

I'm working on the next chapter... I keep getting interrupted by Life!

Still no news on the job hunt... for me or for Ed. Send prayers, please!

Kids are well... Billy turns twelve this week!!

He's my baby... how did this happen?? Where does the time go??

Getting together with family down the shore on Sunday to celebrate the Spring birthdays. :cake: We don't do individual parties for the kids anymore... there's just way too many of them! Instead we do a "seasonal" party and celebrate several at once. I'm hoping the weather remains as gorgeous as it has been all week! :sunny:

Hope to update tomorrow or Saturday...

Kathy

I know how you feel. It seems like everytime I think I've got a few minutes to write, I sit down and am immediately interrupted. :sad2:

Fingers crossed for you and Ed for job hunting success!!!

Time does fly....enjoy the birthday party this weekend! Wish Billy a happy birthday from us! :goodvibes

Dear Kathy,

I am very far behind because I got so wrapped up in the Easter music preparation and then I got very ill. I was able to read your letter about the Autism monster and I found it to be one of the most educational and enlightening pieces about Autism I have ever read. I have a cousin whose son has Asperger's. He changed developmentally after he received an improper dose of medication in the emergency department. I wish I could remember what. I think it was an IV antiemetic that was administered when he was a toddler. I just can't be sure.

He is a young adult now. I remember thinking at the time that he most certainly could not have developed autism from an overdose of medication. That's impossible, I remember thinking. But that memory haunted me enough to always make sure I took my children to a pediatric hospital when they needed any type of treatment that could not be performed in the pediatrician's office. I remember when Brian broke his arm and they placed a small IV catheter to give him a small dose of sedation or pain medication. I whispered, "thank God I am here and not in another emergency department".

I remember when Nicholas got his first dpt shot. At the time they gave the deactivated virus versus a recombinant form (I think). He was two months old and he screamed bloody murder for two hours after I got him home. This was a child who never screamed. He was the calmest baby on earth. I took him immediately to the ED, where I think at least one of the nurses thought I was crazy, but the pediatric nurse practitioner that I began to rely on, did not. Nicholas was not allowed to receive his 4 month and 6 month dpt. The p was dropped out and he did not receive pertussus till he was either 12 or 18 months old and when he did, he received an inactivated, recombinant form of the injection. I wish I could remember the specifics of the forms of the injection, but I can't. I just remember that there were two different preps and the least dangerous was not given until the child was over 12months. This has since changed. As you know, recommendations for vaccinations change freqently and the ingredients and processing of the vaccination formula improves, who hope, with technology.

So even though I was originally a disbeliever about the potential impact of vaccinations and other medications on the neurological developement of children, I became very vigilent when I had my own children.

Thank you so much for sharing that letter with us. It makes me wonder about the vulnerability that all children experience towards neurological and psychiatric disorders such as ADHD, bipolar, oppositional defiance, anxiety disorders, and OCD. It seems to me that Autism, as well as these other disorders, are on the rise and that environmental factors place a huge role in their onset.

Thank you again!

Thanks, Mary Ellen. Doctors always brush away suggestions that vaccinations may be involved with the increase in developmental disorders, but I firmly believe in mothers' (and nurses'!) intuition. When your gut tells you something, you should listen.

I know it sounds like a cliche, but ... if I can't change what happened to Billy, at least I can spread the word so other families may have a greater chance of avoiding his fate.

I'm sorry to hear that you were sick! Since you're back on the DIS I hope that means you're feeling much better! :flower3:

We'll go ahead and start the prayers now.
You'll need to stock up.

You've got that right!! :lmao:

Kathy

Yes... I've been waffling between June 2011 and December 2011 for several weeks now and have finally come to a decision...

June is the winner!!

* It will be less crowded... so much better for Billy!
* It "costs" fewer DVC pts, so we can stay nine nights instead of seven.
* Warmer weather means there will be more of a chance the kids will get to use the pool.

Three thumbs WAY UP!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

And.... I just trimmed SIX MONTHS off of my countdown!!!

You may now congratulate me.....

Kathy
