A good start for Texas

A thing we're doing in our area seems to be printing various things with 3D printers. One of the local library branch a few of the employees have come back to use the 3D printer there to make face shields. My state is now going to be using 3D printers for swabs to be used in testing as we lack enough swabs. I know there are other companies that are using 3D printers and the like to make various PPE and testing items in the absence of an abundance of that.

An art museum in Portland, Disjecta, is organzing 3D printing of PPE too ❤️

Montgomery county (part of Houston metro area) has lifted the stay at home order. I don’t know the details, but that was very surprising. We shall see what comes of that. I believe Houston is the only major city in Texas not requiring masks right now.

My shoulder injury has certainly gotten worse. I couldn't have my follow up appt. with my surgeon, and all my PT was called off.
I'm trying to continue the few exercises I had been given before I was cut off...

remember motion is lotion. Most people don’t won’t to hear that when they are in pain. Good that you are continuing with some exercises.
about 15 years ago. I was having knee pain. Don’t know what I did to it. Not bad at first but started to hurt probably every other day than every day. I knew about motion is lotion back than but most people don’t want to hear that when they are in pain. So about 6 months went by. I was working a double and had a very bad day. On my my feet walking the whole day.lots of pain Told myself I need to see a doctor about this. When I woke up the next day no more pain haven’t had pain since. Don’t even remember what knee it was

MOTION IS LOTION
REST IS RUST

Thank you!
I cannot sit still, so I'm doing what I can to keep active...
but even putting a shirt on is a very painful experience.

I don't really think re-opening medical procedures is jumping the gun. It's nuts that they were closed to begin with. People HAVE to be able to go to the doctor. I wonder how many people with medical conditions quietly got worse during the closure because their appts were deemed not important.
My son has a medical condition. He did not get worse while waiting for his appointments during this time. He stayed safe.

Good for him. My brother has diabetic neuropathy in his feet. He has already had toes amputated on both feet because of it. He is supposed to be monitored by his doctor every month. His last two appointments were cancelled because they weren't an "emergency". I am terrified he's going to lose one or both feet because of this. But hey, let's all just focus solely on this virus.

People are getting worse. My department is doing a few “elective” surgeries due to their level of urgency. I have one guy that calls me every week to get scheduled.

What does elective surgery mean? As a layperson it conjures up various forms of cosmetic surgery to me. I realize that this makes up a large portion of many hospitals' income but isn't the Fed bill supposed to help with that?

Government should never make individual medical decisions. That authority should always rest with the doctor & patient.

my doctor & I had a discussion about the risks vs benefits of havng a scheduled treatment next month. I am grateful to be proceeding, and that the decision was up to us, based on the details of my situation & exposure.

Can your brother's condition be monitored via telemedicine? A friend of mine is stuck in a rehabilitation/long care facility currently and although she hates seeing her doctor via a screen she admits the "visit" is basically the same as seeing him in person.

basically anything that is scheduled in advance and not done through an emergency situation.

Every surgeon has the right to override the rules right now. And we have been for urgent elective surgeries.

If it can, his doctor never mentioned it. He was just told to go to the ER if the pain in his feet got unbearable. Which seems counter-productive to me. Thank goodness he'll be able to go to the doctor next month.

We have gone from 90 surgeries a day to 10.

Every surgeon has the right to override the rules right now. And we have been for urgent elective surgeries. Everything is at the discretion of the surgeon. But due to a big portion of our surgeries requiring post op ICU beds and/or vents it can become complicated. They don’t want to take an ICU bed or a vent that would be needed for a covid patient when the surgery could’ve waited a few more weeks.
So this doesn't include organ transplants or conditions that can be treated w/ pharmaceuticals interim?

No offense, but that may be part of the problem, people don't exactly understand what that means.

Hernia? Sorry, wait.
Routine cardiac cath for monitoring? Sorry, wait.
Hip surgery? Wait.
Spinal Surgery? Wait.

At some point these have to happen, or some things will become an emergency, like hernias for example.

That doesnt seem unreasonable & sounds like the decisions are medical/doctor driven

I have no idea.

I would assume a transplant is urgent due to the organ only being good for a certain amount of time but my hospital doesn’t do organ transplants.

Pain doesn’t equal urgency. If you need a spinal fusion due to radiculopathy most of those are waiting. If you need it due to cervical myelopathy and are at risk of being paralyzed those are being done. Brain tumor are being done.

If he needs to be seen on the meantime, have him request a phone or computer visit.
Physicians (including endocrinologists and neurologists) in our community are using those visits with patients who need care.

If his patient access via the web allows, he may be able to upload a brief 1/2 or page of information, timing symptoms or whatever applies. Try to do that a couple of days before the telemed appt. That allows the Dr to see the concerns ahead of time, and then discuss later with the patient.

They are really trying to keep their patient population as safe as possible.

No offense taken since I truly don't know what the terminology means. When my mother was ill I left all the medical conversations to elder sister since she was a good translator, LOL.
