I had absolutely no idea that putting deodorant on in public was considered shocking.
I assume that putting on chapstick or lotion or sunscreen is also something that should be done in private?
OMG, I can't even imagine how many people I've offended. I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to anyone who has had to witness me rubbing a stick of chapstick on my lips. I'm truly sorry for the horrors I've put you through. And even worse, I've actually put sunscreen on MY LEGS!!!! IN PUBLIC!!!
I'm so sorry. I swear, I really had no idea that these were such disgusting, classless behaviors. I promise that in the future, I will make sure we go in the bathroom to take care of these tasks, preferably in a stall so nobody in the bathroom has to witness this either.

They have toothpaste already on them. It activates when you use it.

And as far as the deodorant thing goes, if you feel the need to apply it in school, do it in the bathroom. There are just no boundaries anymore.

It hadn't occurred to me before I read this thread that anyone would think it was acceptable to apply deodorant in a classroom that is filled with other people. I can't imagine how anyone with any sense of decorum could think it was okay to do something like that. Now maybe the girl forgot to apply it before that and was afraid she'd have terrible body odor and thought applying it was the lesser of two evils, but it's still awfully tacky. Hygiene issues need to be dealt with in privacy, not in a public room surrounded by other people. Applying sunscreen on the beach or at the pool? Completely normal and acceptable. Applying it in a classroom, restaurant or grocery store? Tacky. Applying deodorant in a locker room or restroom - even a public restroom - is totally normal and acceptable. Doing it in a classroom is tacky. A discrete swipe of chapstick applied in public? Acceptable even to the most strict etiquette experts. I think there must be lots of people who don't care about that sort of thing any longer, though.

If nobody had differing opinions about whether it was couth or uncouth to apply deodorant to your pits in front of a classroom of people there would be no reason for anyone to state whether the girl had any class or not .

This is one of the reasons I love the English people. They have traditions and stick to them. Rules of etiquette, etc.

Here everyone is so quick to say "oh, that is so last era". We do not stick by what is appropriate for fear of being old fashioned. Let's start a thread, again, about breastfeeding in public. Anyone?

I thought the OP was kidding until I read some of the replies.

I honestly had no idea that putting deodorant under your arms was such a private matter. I really don't get it.

And to the poster who compared it to feminine spray...are you serious? You are really comparing armpits to genitals? i guess tank tops are definitely out then.
