A Girl Just Put on Deodorant in my Classroom

A discrete swipe of chapstick applied in public? Acceptable even to the most strict etiquette experts.

Discrete? Really?
Now you're suggesting we have to be discrete about applying chapstick?
I'm in big trouble then.
I put my chapstick on right out in public. I don't even try to cover up or hide my lips from public view. Shame on me.

Come on people. We are talking about rubbing a stick under the arms. It's not like we are talking about exposing private parts or picking your nose or wiping your butt.

I'm really having a hard time figuring out what is so disgusting about putting on deodorant that it has to be hidden from public view. The thought of being offended or somehow shocked by someone putting on deodorant continues to baffle me.

:rotfl2: Well personally I think I'd find it hard not to be discrete when putting on chapstick - it's a pretty quick and simple process, after all. I think most other people are fairly discrete as well, but maybe you are more enthusiastic or elaborate with your application than most people. Obviously if you object to discretion then you should flail your chapstick around as much as you want. :rotfl:

Next they'll be telling us that scratching yourself is unacceptable.

HELLO It already is :confused3, :rotfl2:

She did was was best for her at the time. She may have thought she needed more so she applied more. For all we know, she may have a sweating issue and wants to insure that it does not cause her any embarrassment. Sure she could have excused herself and applied it in the restroom, however I can assure you that she did not know that her lack or decorum. manners, etiquette, pride or what ever else she now lacks would be a topic of discussion on the DIS:rolleyes1

I'm so sick.

I left my gym bag in the car with my deodorant in it overnight.
So this morning, I took a shower, put my clothes on, then went to get in the car to leave for work, and right there, out in the open, standing next to the car in front of the whole world.......I put on DEODORANT!
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

And the worst part is I didn't even feel like a disgusting human being!

You go, girl! :lmao:

Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going, I leave for 3 days and come back and it was at the top. :lmao: I never knew that someone doing this would stir up such debate and controversy. Maybe we can start a new one that could potentially last forever about people wearing white sox and dress shoes.

Well, I'm a guy, so not sure if that makes it better or worse. :)

Whoops! Sorry about that! :o

Honestly, I don't think it makes any difference. I just can't get worked up over the whole "OMG a student put deodorant on at their desk". So what?

If you're a fussy kind of teacher who expects a certain level of decorum in the classroom, then you can simply say, "Miss So-and-so, please take care of your personal grooming needs outside of class." The kid will get the idea pretty quick.

I had a teacher like that who would jump on us if we pulled out a comb in her class. She was very proper. On the other hand, I also had another teacher who would let her "favorite" girls comb her long hair at recess.

My mother always taught me that one of the least classy things you can ever do is judge other people on their lack of "class". It doesn't mean you have to start picking your teeth at the table like they do, but it means you politely ignore the behavior if they're adults, or correct them if they're children under your care. And you should always, always judge a person by the content of their character, not by whether they know how to hold a fork correctly.

Personally I prefer black socks with sandals :snooty:

Eh, tell me she changed a tampon in class. THEN I'll be impressed. :rotfl:

I can assure you if I walked into a board meeting and whipped out my deodorant and started applying it, it would be big deal. Shouldn't we be teaching our high schoolers how to act in the larger world?

Yeah, but...

I used that line on a college student once, and told her that when she was in "the real world" she wouldn't be able to crawl out of bed at 10 am every day and she said "Yeah, but I'm not in the real world yet. I'm going to take advantage of the college world while I can." Hard to argue with that. :confused3

:scared1: Another one? Again, I am shocked.

We are a rare species on the CB. :)

Even though I'm a guy, I'm guilty of making the same assumption that other posters here are female. On the CB, I think I'm probably right about 80% of the time.

What I learned from this thread:
Never post at school.
I'm a fussy kind of teacher if I expect a certain level of decorum in my classroom.
Putting on deodorant is the same as applying chapstick.
Most dissers are women.
All teachers are assumed to be women.
If I consider this type of behavior shocking, I've not seen anything.
If I consider this type of behavior classless, I have no class.
Lifting a sweatshirt and exposing one's self to apply deodorant is better than stinky.
Never post at school.
Wait.
I said that.
The most innocuous thread I ever started (IMHO) has taken on a life if its own.
And my quip about looking like George Clooney went nowhere.

What did she expose? Did she rip her whole top off in order to apply the deodorant? Was she flashing her bra to the classroom?

Because I was assuming she just lifted her t-shirt a few inches and stuck her hand up underneath, in which case all she "exposed" was a bit of tummy and side. But if I'm wrong, please elaborate!

And personally I think there's a big difference between considering a behaviour tacky or inappropriate and considering the student herself to be entirely classless - which is where some posters on this thread was going.
