Managed to get Exeter to Sheffield (300 miles) for $32, and then Hemel to Exeter (200 miles, but via London) for $38! My folks are driving between Sheffield and Hemel so no cost to me there (although that means 3 of us in the back, cramped!). That's $70 for 500 miles at only 5 days notice, not bad!
(My car does 50mpg on a good run, fuel is now $10 a gallon so that's $100 minimum for the round trip - and it's faster to take the train to Sheffield than it is to drive by approximately 90 minutes, $30 and 90 minutes saved!).
Also managed to get Plymouth to Exeter for $8 return in January for two weekends. They're about 45 miles apart, so that's $12 per trip saved!
I prefer the train anyway - just sit back and watch a DVD/do some work.
I'm loving the trains this weekend!!
