Sweet Maxine, I doubt if they would be willing to switch you to an older Phase I room if you have reserved a Grand Villa. The price of the older units is quite a bit less, so your deposit would be wrong and your entire bill would have to be reconfigured. Of course you can always ask, but I would greatly surprised if they would be willing to do this. I did not call ahead for any special requests, but when you make your ressie online, there is a space for comments, and I asked for a first-floor room if possible. I did get a first-floor room, but the girl at check-in said that we were lucky, that a lot of people request first-floor rooms and don't get them. I must have made my ressie far enough in advance. As far as our stay, it was kind of strange. Overall, we were pleased with the place and would probably go back, but we had a couple of major problems. The refrigerator in our unit didn't work when we got there, and we had to ask twice to have it fixed. The toilet in the second bathroom kept clogging and overflowing and there was a plunger right there beside the toilet so this must be a common occurence. Every time we would use the washing machine, water would leak out from under the wall into the kitchen. We never called maintenance about it because it wasn't until we were almost ready to leave that we put two and two together and realized the water was coming from the washing machine. We kept coming out in the morning and stepping in puddles of water and thinking we had spilled something. And the floors were very slippery when wet so we darn near killed ourselves several times falling. We did tell them about it when we left. Then the volcano pool quit working about halfway through our stay and they never got it fixed while we were there. This probably doesn't sound so bad because you could still swim in it, but it was obviously the volcano part of it that chilled the water. Within a couple of days the water was so hot that you couldn't stand to swim in it. But the worst part was that my DH found two roaches under a pile of laundry we had sitting in the hall - one dead and one alive. Now, in all fairness, the place looked absolutely immaculate and I know roaches are everywhere in the south. And on our way home we stayed at a Ramada Inn in South Carolina that also looked immaculate, and I saw a roach in it. So perhaps it's just impossible not to have them in the south, but we don't have them at home and it really grossed us out. But, the place was beautiful, luxurious (by our standards, at least), comfortable and it at least *appeared* to be clean. I can see why they're refurbishing the old units, though - they obviously need it.
