A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

So many good things in one update!

First of all, dinner sounds really good! May have to try it out on a future trip. Also, that chocolate caramel bar thing y'all had in Germany looks wonderful. I don't blame Everett (or your DH) for wanting to share with you.

I'm glad DH let you take his picture in front of the fountain without jumping in. Although, that would've been hilarious if we would've done that! :lmao:

The pictures of Everett in his jammies are adorable!!! Such a good idea to switch him into his jammies while at the park.

And what great news for your upcoming trips! The Savannah view at AKL sounds so nice. I would really like to stay there one day....I just worry about the distance to the parks. You'll have to let me know what you think. And a big :woohoo: for Castle view at Poly in December! Y'all are arriving on the day we leave!

Wow what a fabulous update!!! What a lovely evening in WS!!! PirateKate really has made those caramel chewy bars famous...I am totally going to try to get one! Your chocolate caramel thingy looked yummy!!! popcorn::

I love the pickle tree! Growing up we always had a pickle ornament!!! My mom's family is German, so it has always been a tradition! We now have one at our house as well! :thumbsup2

All of your upcoming plans sound amazing!!!!

What a great update! First I'm not sure which is cuter... Everett in the video or in his comfy jammies! That caramel bar looks delicious! It will be hard choice between that and the chewy caramel bar when we hit up Epcot! I am going to have to do some duck observing! What a cool observation! We also love the pickle tree!!! Sounds like ut was a great day in Epcot!

Awesome trips coming up! :thumbsup2 We have a pickle ornament (DH's family), but I would draw the line at the whole tree :lmao: We do have a whole Cubs tree tho. I loved the pics of DS in his PJs. I wish I could watch Illuminations in my PJs!

Great updates!! The video of you and Everett was adorable. Paxton also enjoys "tasting" our knees. :rotfl:

Both the drink and the chocolate caramel bar look positively delicious!! I swear, I am getting more & more excited about Disney World snacks as the days until our trip pass!

So great that he enjoyed the "booms"! :thumbsup2 I'm anxious to see how Paxton will do with them.

Your next 2 trips look amazing!! First a savannah view, then an MK view?! How awesome! Y'all will have a great time!!! And the couples weekend is a great idea. We are planning on doing the same thing in February, and as much as I dread leaving DS, I know mommies & daddies need some time to themselves to keep the marriage working. :goodvibes Hopefully you will TR that trip, so I can read it & prepare myself for ours the same way your first TR with DS helped prepare me for our first trip with DS!!!

The chocolate caramel bar thing looks really good... even if it isn't PirateKate's famous Chewey Caramel Bar.:lmao: Everett definitely deserved a bite for learning to say a new word.:thumbsup2

That is an interesting theory about ducks. I might just have to observe their habits before shows.:rotfl2:

Congratulations on the room at AKL. I've never stayed there, but I've also never known anyone who has to be disappointed by it. I'm sure you'll have a great time there.

December at the Poly MK view will be great. Another place I've never stayed, but would love to. We'll be leaving WL about 2 days before you arrive. I'm really excited about seeing all the Christmas festivities.

Yes, I was 0 for 2 when it came to finding and eating things recommended in other people's trip reports!

I think the WL is a perfect place to be around Christmas time! I know you guys are going to have a wonderful trip!

You know, a long time ago I read a TR where someone's child fell in a fountain. It was funny to read about, but I'm sure not funny in the moment! I would like to avoid that adventure if at all possible!

You know, distance is why we have never stayed there before. Usually we use our DVC point for our big family vacations, and I've never been able to convince my family to try out AKL. I know I am going to LOVE it, and I don't think it will end up being too much further from the action than SSR is, but I will be sure to report back.

I did buy a pickle ornament on one of our trips, maybe I should secretly buy one each trip and then let the pickles slowly take over our Christmas tree. :rolleyes1

The caramel bar was delicious, and until very recently I was under the impression that it was the chewy caramel bar. I mean, its bar shaped, chewy and caramel, how could I have possibly been wrong??!! :rotfl2:

I think watching Illuminations in my jammies sounds lovely! But it is much easier to pull off that particular fashion choice when you are a toddler! ;)

Yes, all the treats definitely make the trip!

I'm hope Paxton does well for you with the fireworks. It can be really hit or miss with kids, but if he is OK with loud noises in general (things like police sirens and construction noises, etc) you'll have a good chance of him liking the "booms" also.

I am really excited about our next two trips. They will both be short, but very sweet. I feel like it is all I can think about now! I will be writing a TR for both upcoming adventures, so I would love for you to read along. I know I'm going to miss Everett, especially since he LOVES Disney so much right now, but knowing that I'll be taking him back less than two months later will help.

A true redneck baby would have been splashing without a swim diaper. :rotfl: I used to live in Floribama, too. Everett looks like he's having a lot of fun in the water.

The chocolate caramel bar looks good, too, though I'll never try it. Only chewy caramel bars for me. I'm glad Everett got to try a bite. :)

Congratulations on your two trips coming up! AKL and the Poly are both beautiful resorts. F&W does seem like the sort of thing that would be simpler without toddlers along.

Episode 35- the update in which I forget to take pictures

Alright, first off, I have to apologize for the lack of photos in my last day update. I ended up accidentally leaving both my cameras with baggage services, and truthfully I was sad to be leaving and in no mood to take pictures. I hope that won’t deter you readers, and that you’ll stick with me for the last day

Well, we woke up this last morning with a heavy heart. I knew that this was our last day, and I didn’t know exactly when we would be returning. I really hate not having a back-up trip planned. It just seems so final to leave the parks without another trip in the works. I’m going to try to never do it again.

Anyway, we spent the morning facing down the most dreaded chore- packing to go home. I am not a typical DISer, in that I do not relish packing. My idea of an ideal vacation would be one where everything you need just magically shows up in the hotel room. I will grudgingly pack to go on vacation, because I have the trip to look forward to, and I like to make sure that every detail is attended to, so we’ll have a wonderful time.

However, I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to pack to go home. :scared1::scared1:

We had a 10 am ADR at Kona, but at 8:30, I was still moving things from one side of the room to the other, not committing them to a suitcase. DH wasn’t exactly being helpful, since for some reason packing had become my job on the delegation of responsibilities. As it ended up, I just threw things in the suitcase, squished it down and zipped it up, crossing my fingers that we would not exceed any weight limits.

Another frustrating part of the morning, was when I went to pick up my phone and realized that DH had not plugged it in the night before. He had taken it from me, and told me he was going to plug it in, but he hadn’t pushed the plug far enough into the outlet to make the connection, and my phone was dead.

It was another little annoyance, but it added up to me having a very grumpy morning. :rolleyes1

The one really bright spot was Orlando Crib Rentals. We had asked them to come at 8:30 am to pick up the crib, so we could head out to make our breakfast ADR, and they were there, right on the dot. They rolled the crib right out of the room and it was so nice to receive that level of service and have one less thing to worry about.

While I was messing with the suitcases, DH fed Everett breakfast, so he was all ready to go. I was worried about him waiting until 10 to eat, afraid that we’d have a hungry, cranky toddler. I think it ended up being a good decision, because this time I could focus on eating my own food, and not worry about trying to feed Everett at the same time.

When everyone and everything was ready we headed out to bell services. I suppose we could have just called, and they would have come and taken our luggage, but remember how I said that my DH was cheap, well he didn’t want to have to tip the porter, so we had to do it ourselves. It was a good thing that we had all that practice from prior vacations hoofing it to the metro, it came in handy trekking through the resort. Its good to know that we didn’t totally miss out on the hobo experience this vacation. :rotfl2:

We deposited our luggage with Bell services, including my DH’s backpack, which held the camera. I didn’t realize that he was going to check his backpack, or I would have taken the camera out, but by the time I realized what had happened we were already at the bus depot, and walking back to bell services and waiting for them to dig out our luggage would definitely have made us very late for our ADR. As it was we were pushing it, since we needed to get to the MK, and then take the monorail to the Poly, so I just let it go.

The bus depot was an absolute madhouse, and this was the one time that I regretted the decision to not have a rental car. Since we were at the main depot, and the last bus stop, the majority of the buses were full by the time they pulled up. Right when I really began to despair of making our reservation, a CM showed up with a clipboard and a walkie talkie, and managed to call in some more buses. I was really thankful for this Deus es Machina moment, and we were loaded on a new bus and off to the MK in no time.

We also had good luck with the monorails, and were able to get to the Poly just in time for our reservation. Kona Café for breakfast on our last morning is a tradition, because I always think it is easier to stomach the last day if you have literally have a stomach full of sweet and tasty goodness. I know that some people swear by the Macadamia nut pancakes, but I only have eyes for the Tonga Toast. Tonga toast is probably my favorite food on earth, and paired with a delicious cappuccino from the coffee bar, and the sights and sounds of the Poly lobby, and you have one heavenly meal. :cloud9:

As I sat back to enjoy my largess, I once again heard a little voice insisting “Bite, Bite, Bite”! Apparently I am raising a whole new generation of Tonga Toast aficionados, because Everett LOVED it. I mean, who wouldn’t love deep fried cinnamon-sugar banana bread, so it wasn’t exactly a stretch, but DS happily gobbled down every “bite” I gave him. :)

It was such a pleasant meal, DS was well behaved, everything went smoothly, and the food was delicious. It is meals like this that almost lull me in a sense of complacency when it comes to eating out, and makes me think that we could perhaps take Everett to more restaurants. :lmao:

Breakfast finished, we headed out, taking a quick spin around the Poly lobby, looking for last minute pin trades, and then we headed outside on an entirely different mission- would we be successful?

I really enjoy packing.....to go on vacation. The packing to go home is absolutely horrible, however!

What a yummy sounding breakfast. I'm considering breakfast at Kona for one morning during our Oct. 2012 trip. But, I don't know if I would be able to choose between the Macadamia pancakes & the Tonga Toast!

I hate packing at all times but I especially hate packing at the end of a vacation. :sad2:

I'm glad that you made your reservation so that you could end your trip on a high note!

Last day is never much of an enjoyable experience, but the Kona breakfast is a good way to start the day regardless. I'm glad Everette seems to enjoy it as much as you do! Hopefully the rest of this last day will turn out to be as good as breakfast.

I got a little behind...

Your carmel bar looks delish!! I did manage to procure a Chewey Caramel Bar on my trip, but I think I will put yours on my list for my next trip...whenever that may be...

Colby is currently in a train stage, too. We were able to pull him away from the trains in Germany with the promise of food! Does Everett have the wooden train track? Colby loves his and has about 15 trains for it. Our playroom has been taken over by this!

I would have to agree with your statement about the ducks enjoying the fireworks! They are always around!

I understand your feelings on your last morning. Somehow I got the packing job as well...maybe it is because I do not like to give up control to DH. :lmao: I am glad the bus situation worked out and you made it to Kona. I really wanted to squeeze in breakfast there on this last trip, but it did not happen. I guess Tonga Toast will have to wait for a future trip.

Looking forward to seeing what you are attempting next!

It's always the little things that get me irritated with DH too! I probably would have lost my mind if he didn't charge the cell, and checked the camera :lmao: You handled it very well. So glad you had a nice breakfast. What's next?

This just reminded me to make sure I have the camera in the carry on today! Have to get Nick's shocked face when he finds out his 7th Birthday will be celebrated in DHS!
So glad you had a great breakfast! Looking forward to reading about what comes next!

I have just started reading your TR and I am so loving it..... I'm up to Barfy (I love you mom already:love:) I also have a non Disney loving DH and we are going on our first WDW trip EVER:scared1: in December:santa: You give me courage:)

We are the same way. If we don't have a trip on the books already, we make one before we leave. :wizard: It's too hard to drive out of those magical arches not knowing when you will be back.

Everett has good taste. Tonga Toast is good stuff! I have to scrape a lot of the banana mush out, though, and just have a small bit of it for flavor with the bread. I am hoping that we can get in a Poly breakfast on this October trip, but if not, we'll go over to eat lunch. Either way, we will be visiting Poly at some point very soon. :thumbsup2

Some day I'll find the REAL chewy caramel bar! :rotfl:

I'm really excited about our upcoming trips, especially since they pretty much came out of nowhere!

Ugh packing to go home is never fun!

Mmmmm Tonga Toast! popcorn::

uggg packing. I need to get cracking on packing for our next trip, but I don't want to do that either!

I really enjoy packing.....to go on vacation. The packing to go home is absolutely horrible, however!

You can't go wrong with the Tonga Toast, it really is manna of the gods! I would eat it every day if I could! :cloud9:

I hate packing at all times but I especially hate packing at the end of a vacation. :sad2:

I'm glad that you made your reservation so that you could end your trip on a high note!

I would have been very sad to miss out on Kona. I know they have tonga toast at Captain Cooks, and that is a nice back up plan, but there is just something awesome about Kona Cafe in the mornings. The smell of the lobby, watching the monorails go by, the light filtering in from the skylight- magic! :lovestruc

Well, last days are last days, but a last day at Disney is better than not being at Disney!

Oh, Thomas the Train is big stuff around here right now! I got him a starter set, but I am trying to save it for Christmas. The barnes and noble down the street has a whole train table and lots of trains, so I take him there to play a lot. He really enjoy it!

Glad someone else agrees with me about ducks and fireworks! ;)

It's always the little things that get me irritated with DH too! I probably would have lost my mind if he didn't charge the cell, and checked the camera :lmao: You handled it very well. So glad you had a nice breakfast. What's next?

Thank you, I bet I could have handled it better, but it was the last day...

This just reminded me to make sure I have the camera in the carry on today! Have to get Nick's shocked face when he finds out his 7th Birthday will be celebrated in DHS!

I hope your son had a fabulous birthday! DHS would be a great place to spend a 7th birthday!

I have just started reading your TR and I am so loving it..... I'm up to Barfy (I love you mom already:love:) I also have a non Disney loving DH and we are going on our first WDW trip EVER:scared1: in December:santa: You give me courage:)

I don't have a problem with banana mush, but I could definitely see how it could be a little overpowering! A Poly breakfast always sounds good to me!

Well, now I known when my next 4 (!!) trips are going to be (Oct, Dec, Feb and April), and hopefully on June 1st I'll be a proud Floridian again. At that point the only questions will be what weekends I don't spend in WDW!

Episode 36- the update in which there will be no playgrounds

What was our new mission, you might be wondering? Well we were in search of a playground (preferably one not near a swimming pool!). I had a busy toddler on my hands, and a long plane flight coming up, and it seemed very logical to me to spend whatever time necessary playing him hard at the playground to expend as much energy as possible. Since the Poly was a deluxe resort, I figured that a playground had to come as a standard amenity, right?

Well we went outside to check out the map of the grounds, and I couldn’t find where the playground was located. There was a portion of the map labeled children’s activity area, but that was just the splash pad, no slides or climbing equipment in sight. We wandered around for a while, and couldn’t find it, so I started to get frustrated, and made the decision to head over to the Contemporary where I KNEW there was a playground.

As a postscript- I am still not sure if there is a playground at the Poly! I did some research when I got back, and I have seen mention of a playground on various websites, but they say it is “around the volcano pool” and I have yet to see any photographic evidence. I promise you, we walked all the way around the pool, and found nothing. I’m thinking that this “playground” is the lock ness monster of the Polynesian! Anyone have any ideas?

Well since the Poly was a bust- we hopped on the monorail and headed over to the Contemporary. When we stayed there in ’86 we were in a garden wing room, and our sliding door opened right up to the playground. This is not just a figment of my imagination, I have actual photographic proof, so I knew that the Contemporary wouldn’t let me down.

Well, we got there and headed right outside, consulting the map of the property, and it looks like the garden wing that I stayed in was the one demolished for BLT, because, once again, there was no playground to be found. Just to make sure I wasn’t missing something we walked around outside, and while I found a very nice water play area, there was not a slide or swing to be found.

Nuts! This was really frustrating, but in the end I guess it didn’t matter, because when I peaked in the stroller, I found a sleeping Everett. Well, maybe we could run him around at POR before we got on Magical Express.
Since we were here and had some time to kill, we headed up to the grand canyon concourse and spent some time looking around. I really love the Contemporary, maybe because it was where we always stayed when I was little, but to me the Contemporary IS Disney World. DH seemed really impressed with it, and has actually made mention of wanting to stay there someday, so we’ll see. The DVC points for BLT are so high that it has prevented my family from staying there (since we always choose more nights over location), but maybe someday.

Once I was finished shopping, we walked over to the walkway for BLT. I wanted to take a look, but I knew that access was restricted for guests only- or so I thought.

When I walked over to the door, it just opened right up- like they were expecting me. I knew that we weren’t supposed to be doing this, but at the same time, it was like a sign from above!

I grabbed DH by the arm and ran in, before the door had a chance to shut.

DH: “I thought we weren’t allowed to go over here”
Me: “Well… I thought so too, but the door opened so maybe its OK- like an open house or something”
DH (skeptically): “Riiiiight”
Me: “well, we’ll only go until we hit a locked door, then we’ll just turn around and leave, anyway we are DVC members, I think its OK for us to check it out for a future stay. Its not like we are pool hopping or anything”.
Well, we continued on down the loooooong walkway connecting BLT with the tower, and when we came to the entrance door, it also opened right up.

Me: “see, no problems”

Well at that point we encountered an elevator, one that looked like it needed key access for operation. Also right at the moment another couple came up and low and behold, they were headed down to the lobby to check out. It must be fate- right? The couple were on their honeymoon and we chatted in the elevator on the way down about the crowds this week. They were a very nice couple and we wished them well.

Now we were in the lobby of BLT. It was pretty small and frankly not that impressive. It was very nicely decorated, but I still prefer the lobby of SSR. I walked over to the back of the lobby to look out the window at the pool, and right at that moment a family came through the door, and the mom literally held the door open, expecting me to go through with my stroller. This must be a sign! So through I went.

Once outside I checked out the owners fountain, and found the names to be very clouded over by lime scale. If I was a founding member of BLT, I would be very sad to see that the fountain was so poorly designed so that the names were not visible. I hope for their sakes that it gets fixed in the future.

We walked around outside for a little bit, checking out the pool and the kiddie splash area, both which looked really nice. If we ever do get to stay here in the future, it will be a great spot to spend some afternoons.
Once I had peaked to my hearts content we meandered over to the door to get back into the lobby. This is where I ran into trouble. You couldn’t get back in unless you had a key!! I stared to worry that this was a very ill-conceived idea, and that I really should never have set foot in BLT, because now I was stuck outside!

Luckily not a few minutes went by when another family came outside, and we darted in right after them, whew! Crisis averted. Having had enough rule- bending for the day (I am apparently not cut out for illicit activities, even the most minor ones), we left out the front door of the lobby (which was luckily not locked) and walked back over to the main entrance of the Contemporary.
