A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

Yikes! What excitement! My cousin lives just outside of DC and got stuck in all that traffic after the earthquake. We were in the air on our way home from WDW when the quake hit! It was felt by people here in town, though.

Good luck facing the hurricane!

That earthquake was freaky, wasn't it? My first thought was when I felt the shaking was an earthquake and then I felt silly, because we don't have earthquakes around here and then after it was over, I thought maybe I imagined the whole thing and was going crazy. :rotfl: Glad to hear you all are okay!

Oh my word! How scary!!!! I am so glad you were safe!

Enjoy your visit with your family!

I'm glad you & Everett (and your house!) made it through the earthquake ok. It was crazy watching my facebook feed go crazy with people all over mentioning the same earthquake!

Glad you are at your parents house. Hurricane's can be pretty scary.
When Irene was passing through the Carribean we got the effects of the outer bands. Lots of rain, scary thunder and lightning. Some part of the island lost power and there was some flooding but not so bad like last year with Thomas.

Nothing wrong with a drink or 2 at the playground while supervising.:thumbsup2 If there's something wrong with, then I'm a bad parent too.:lmao:

Looks like a fun day and a relaxing evening. It's too bad that Everett was more interested in the pool than the playground, but I'm sure he was just as happy running around inside as he would have been on the playground.:rotfl2:

Yes, Everett is pretty happy as long as he gets to run around, the location is a moot point! :)

Bummer Everett didn't like your playground plan, but at least he got to run around inside!!! :thumbsup2 And you got to enjoy your beverages! ;):drinking1

I don't get to enjoy many adult beverages at home, so its a priority on vacation!

Sounds like y'all had a nice ending to the "rest" day. And a big "YAY!" for Everett sleeping through the night! :cheer2:

It was a really nice day, capped off by a nice quiet night

No worries about bad parenting, while drinking and watching Everett at the playground. It's a vacation for you too! ;) It is a shame that Everett found the pool to be more entertaining than the playground though... And Huzzah for being able to sleep for an entire night!

Everett was pretty obsessed with the pool, I think he is going to be really sad now that it is fall and we won't be visiting the pool here in town any longer!

Hi, just found your report and what a great job you are doing...what wonderful memories for you all...BTW...so sorry about your brother's fiance's passing...how awful for him and both of the families....

we are going next month with our children and grandchildren ....the grandkids are 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 and we cant wait......this will be my GD 3rd trip and my GS first.....

we are staying at the BC.....my first time staying in the park....I am so excited....I love Disney...as does my oldest DS....my husband and other 2 DS not so much....actually DH..not at all....(I know)....(gasp)....:scared1:
what kind of person doesnt like disney......but it his defense this will be our 8th trip..1st with the GC...and he puts up with it ...(barely);)

I think you are going to have a wonderful time! The Beach Club is one of my favorite resorts and will be perfect for younger kids!

Too bad the pool was so close to the playground. If Everett hadn't have seen, I'm sure he would have played at the playground happily for a long time.

I'm glad Everett went right to sleep that night. I have to say, I'd have considered getting up at six thirty to be not quite sleeping through the night. My mornings never start before seven, and luckily, my boys seem to agree and never get up before seven.:rotfl:

I wish that my mornings didn't start before 7! Maybe I should try putting Everett to bed later, maybe then he'd sleep in, but by the time 7:30 pm rolls around, I'm finished, and I can't even think about the next day!

Hope you are all ok in Virginia, and not to shaken up.

Yup, A-OK!

Just found your report and I have spent a ton of time catching up on it. I don't have my own children but I have an 18 month old nephew who is the light of my life. I have loved seeing your pics of Everett! So cute! I want to take my nephew to WDW so badly, but my SIL says she doesn't want him to go until he is at least 3 :-(. Neither my bro or SIL is a huge Disney fan, but I love it! I haven't been to WDW since 2007 (but have been to DL twice in the past year) and am dying to go back with the toddler. I just have to figure out how to convince brother and SIL.

Anyway, love your report and photos and can't wait to read more!

Thank you for reading along! I can kind of understand where your BIL and SIL are coming from, and if I didn't have such a Disney background, I might have been tempted to wait until Everett was older to take him also. I think its really hard for those who do not know Disney as well as we do to understand that it REALLY can be appreciated by people of all ages. I know I have loved the trips we've taken so far with Everett and I wouldn't trade them (even the sleepless nights) for the world. I hope you get the chance to take your nephew soon!

We had similar problems with Colby at POFQ this past week with the playground being so close to the pool! Maybe Disney should plan that better...

Yeah for Everett sleeping peacefully while you and DH got to enjoy DTD!! Whoever invented naptime is a genius!!

It sounds like you had a very productive 'rest' day! And then to have it topped off with a full nights sleep courtesy of Everett! :yay:

Yes, I agree, all playgrounds should not be in sight-line of a swimming pool!

Glad to hear all is ok with all of this crazy weather we are having (well is an earthquake weather related? I don't really know) I was missing your trip updates so I'll have something to look forward to next week. Have a nice visit with your family. I hope each day gets a little easier for your brother. Have safe travels too!

Thanks, I did get to visit with my brother for a little bit, and he seemed to enjoy spending time with Everett. They played ball in the backyard and dug in the sandbox together. I hope we were able to take his mind off everything for a little while, and helped make him feel a little better.

Good luck getting back home! Sounds like the East Coast is sure experiencing its share of natural disasters this week. I'm glad your house didn't colllapse around you and I hope you all stay safe through the aftershocks and hurricane.

Everything ended up OK during the hurricane, we didn't even loose power! We were super lucky, 90% of our town did, I'm not sure how we got spared! My middle brother lives a few towns over, and he still doesn't have his power back, and they are saying it might not be until next week! :headache:

Again, I'm so glad y'all were okay in the earthquake. And I'm praying that the hurricane somehow turns more right to stay in the ocean & doesn't hit anyone straight on. Being in south Louisiana, I'm no stranger to a good ole hurricane beat down. I'm praying for all of y'all on the east coast.

Luckily this hurricane didn't do too much damage where my family is from! I lived in Pensacola, FL for a while, and was there during Ivan in '04, so I know how bad it could have been! :sad2:

Safe travels!

Thanks! We were lucky and had an easy trip back.

Earthquake traffic is even worse than regular DC traffic! :lmao:

That earthquake was freaky, wasn't it? Yes, it was really weird! I didn't even think about it being an earthquake until it was over. Living on the East coast my whole life, earthquakes are not on my radar!

Oh my word! How scary!!!! I am so glad you were safe!

Enjoy your visit with your family!

Thank you, we did have a nice time, we even managed to have fun during the hurricane.

I'm glad you & Everett (and your house!) made it through the earthquake ok. It was crazy watching my facebook feed go crazy with people all over mentioning the same earthquake!

It was nuts on FB, the best part was that I got to tease my cousin in San Francisco. They had a little earthquake that afternoon, but I got to brag that our earthquake was better! :rotfl:

Glad you are at your parents house. Hurricane's can be pretty scary.

Luckily my parents and my middle brother (who also lives in CT) were OK. The flooding in northern New England was something! I don't think I would have guessed that it would be worse up there than at the coast!

So glad to hear that y'all made it through the hurricane okay & made it home safe & sound! :thumbsup2

Episode 30- the update in which I stand around and stare at strangers in orange flight suits

Well, even though 6:30 would be a little early for a normal day, since this is a Disney day, and our very last park day, I wanted to make it for rope drop and we needed to be up early anyway.

We got everything ready to go and were out the door at a really reasonable hour. This was our second bus experience, and I wanted to be sure to be at the bus stop early, just in case it took a while for our bus to arrive. Well, as luck would have it, the bus for DHS was pulling away just as we walked up to the bus stop. I did briefly think about running full speed around to the main bus stop to try and catch it, but decided it wasn’t worth it. We would have been quite a site haulin’ though the Bayou!

Amazingly not five minutes after we were left by the first bus, a second DHS bus pulled up to the stop! I guess they must run extra buses in the morning, but either way, I wasn’t about to look a gift bus in the mouth and jumped right on.

We made it to DHS before the official rope drop and were treated to the traditional “Hollywood here we come!” opening. I thought they would change it up since there is a new promotion, but it was pretty much the same as it has been for the past few years. We were part of the throng, but this morning I had a different objective than the masses foaming at the mouth for TSMM fastpasses.

Instead of following the pack to Pixar Place, I broke a hard left, and headed right towards Star Tours. I wasn’t the only one, there was definitely a Mom contingent that was intent on signing their kids up for the Jedi Training Academy, but there also was a select group of “in the know” individuals who gathered with me around the entrance to Star Tours.

When we rounded the bend, we found that there was a literal phalanx of CMs guarding the rope that blocked off the entrance to Star Tours. They were all dressed in the new costumes, and there must have been 15 of them.

Of course, I couldn’t resist asking the 10 million dollar question
Me- “Is there going to be a soft opening today?”

Imposing CM- “We don’t know if the simulators will be operational today, but you can feel free to check back throughout the day and see if we are open” - Hmmm… I should have known I’d be fed the party line.

By this point a small minority of people had gathered outside of the ropes, and like all good Disney fans we quickly began to piece together the information at hand to come to a workable hypothesis.

“Why would they have so many people working today, if they were not planning on opening, they must all be here for a reason”

“Yesterday they opened at ten- maybe they are waiting until then to open again today”

“Look at the CM in the back- I think he is holding a rope- maybe they are setting up the queue right now”

“OMG- the lights on the fastpass sign just turned on, that must be a good thing- right”

“Look over there- managers- they are entering the building in a group, that must mean they are going to open today”

All this time we (the crazy fans) were lingering around the walkway, and they (the CM) were holding steady at the line. It really looked like some sort of West Side Story Disney fan battle would break out at any moment. I kinda felt bad for the CMs, that we were all just standing there staring at them like that.

Every once in a while one of the CM would encourage us to leave, to try another ride, and then come back. I don’t think they realized what sort of rabid fans they were dealing with. That only made us MORE convinced that they were about to open RIGHT THEN, and they were trying to play some sort of Jedi mind trick on us.

Meanwhile, while I was having an exciting morning of standing around staring at strangers in orange flight suits, Mark had taken Everett out of the stroller and was letting him terrorize the upper level of the Backlot express.

At that point I did have a brief moment where I felt bad keeping Everett from rides, to satisfy my single-minded obsession with soft openings, but when I looked over at him , I realized that he was having the time of his life. He didn’t need fancy rides or a playground, running pell mell around tables and chairs was just as awesome (maybe even more so) than watching a 3D movie (since he won’t wear the glasses anyway) or riding the Great Movie Ride (not like he’s ever watched a movie in its entirety). It was one of those moments when I realized that I don’t need to stress out over a toddler having fun at Disney, hanging out with Mom and Dad, checking out some new turf, well, that’s about as good as it gets for an 18 month old. No extra bells and whistles are needed.

After standing around for a good half hour, in which nothing really happened, DH let me know that it was time to move on, and we could come right back. I thought about it, and maybe he was right, we could run over and get fastpasses for Tower or Coaster, and then be back before 10 am (which was the rumored opening time swirling around the group of Disney crazies).

We made our way over to Sunset Blvd, and it was still really empty. I guess everyone was still battling it out over at Pixar Place. We picked up our fastpasses for Tower, and DH even talked me into the single rider line for Coaster. It was a walk on, and we would still make it back to Star Tours well before 10 am.

Dh rode first, and I snapped my latest Everett with e-ticket photo, and then I took my turn. I enjoyed coaster, it was great as always, but I was antsy to get back to Star Tours to see what was going on.

Well, when we got back, the same people were still standing around, and there had been no perceptible changes. One of the guys hanging around told me that some more managers came in and then exited the building, but that was about it. I don’t think police on a stake out could be any more thorough than a devoted Disney fan.

Right about this time the first Jedi Training academy was about to start up. We had never seen it before, so DH took Everett over to watch. I think that DH was dreaming about being up there fighting Darth Vader (sorry sweetie, kids only!), but if it kept him occupied and allowed to continue to stand and stare creepily at the Start Tours CMs, I was happy for the distraction.

When the show ended and there was still no movement at Star Tours (I mean, what is going on, the guy in the Goofy hat told me that a bus driver told him that it was DEFINITELY going to open at 10 am), DH was once again getting antsy. To appease him, I agreed to head over to Muppets, but only because it was close by and we could check again when we got out….

Oh I hope you get to ride Star Tours!

It is so nice that toddlers are pretty easily entertained...most of the time! Colby had the best time running around the Soarin' fastpass area in the evening, when all the fastpasses were gone, while we waited to use the babyswap pass! (He also made several new toddler friends!)

:lmao: You were much more devoted than I was in trying to get in on a soft opening. I walked by, saw it wasn't open and then shrugged it off and said we would just have to be super early for SWW. I'm curious to find out if your diligence paid off. :)

Don't leave us hanging! :lmao: We need to know if you rode Star Tours! I do love how the group of y'all were so persistent & just stood there staring the CM's down! :thumbsup2

Okay, I'm ready for the next update!

So glad you made it through nature's furious forces okay.

Next update - 'The one in which I get to ride the new Star Tours'? :)

Did you find out if any of your fellow Star Tours waiters/stalkers were DISers?

Were the CM's equipped with blasters or lightsabers? I think I'd want to be armed if I had to try to stand between a throng of Disney/Star Wars addicts and the new Star Tours.:lmao:

I think it was a good idea to try to get some quick rides in while you waited... also a good idea to keep popping back by Star Tours for updats and to see if it is open. I hope you get to ride!

Oh my gosh, those poor CMs! :lmao: I can only imagine what was going through their minds with all of the rabid Disney fan Star Tours lovers staring at them!

You are so right about toddlers finding excitement in the simplest things. We took DS to the Aquarium last weekend and I was so worried about entertaining him, but he had I think the most fun when we got to a spot that wasn't crowded and he was able to crawl around on the floor for a few minutes! I was kind of skeeved out about it for a second, but that's what wipes are for, right?

Episode 31- The update in which Everett attempts to jump in a fountain- take 1

The decision to try Muppetvision was not undertaken lightly. I wasn’t sure how Everett was going to do in a longish show, and I really wanted to avoid an ETM*. My plan was to sit at the very end of the row, and bail at the first sign of trouble. Everett was doing much better with his attention span, but I was still eager to avoid another Turtle Talk 2010 incident .

*Extreme toddler meltdown

Before we went into the show, I wanted to get a photo of Everett and me by the fountain. I am a big Muppets fan, and the fountain has always really made me smile, with all of its crazy gags. Of course, someone had plans that did not involve sitting nicely on the edge of the fountain for a photo, and Everett made his first attempt (of the day) to drown himself .

Luckily I was able to catch him before he went into the drink.

And we were able to get one nice picture (even if I did have to resort to the paci to get it). :)

Once our photo objective was met, we headed inside the theater. I was hoping to enter just as the preshow was ending, so we could get right in and start the show, but unfortunately we timed it completely wrong, and the preshow was just starting. On the one hand I was a little happy that we were going to get to see the complete preshow, but on the other hand I was worried that we would use up all of DS’s good behavior stamina before we even got into the movie.

Well, we strapped him into the Becco on my back, which was a good move, because he seemed pretty content to hang out and watch the monitors. That Becco carrier was worth its weight in gold on this trip, because DS seemed to understand that when he was in it, getting down was not an option. If I was just holding him in my arms, it would have been squirmy-worm city, with him trying his hardest to get down and run around.

The preshow over, without and ETM in sight, we headed into the main theater. I made a bee-line for the back, where I knew I could score a seat right at the end of the row. Once I found my perfect “ejection seat” (in case of emergency only!), I set about getting DS out of the carrier and situated on my lap.

I gave him his own set of 3D glasses, which immediately became a chew toy (good thing they are sanitized after each use- right!). I tried to get him to put them on his eyes with an elaborately executed peek-a-boo game, but no dice. Oh well, he’ll figure it out one of these days.

The show started, and although he was staring at a blurry screen, DS seemed pretty content. He liked the penguins and the Bean Bunny animatronic, and he was a big fan of the cannon and the explosion at the end. I hadn’t seen the film since it had been cleaned up and digitized, so I was pretty impressed.

Once we were out of the show, I had one goal in mind- heading back to Star Tours, and although DH wasn’t too keen on standing around waiting with a bunch of Disney nerds, he nevertheless acquiesced.

I headed back over to the Star Tours area, only to find that there was STILL no movement. DH took DS over to the speeder to climb around a little, and I took stock of the situation. I knew that DH wasn’t going to continue to stand around all day and wait for something that may or may not happen, but I was really focused on getting on this ride.

It was then that something clicked in my head! Wait a minute- wasn’t Matt Hotchberg of the WDW Today podcast droning on and on about some Star Tours 2.0 website. What if they had live updates about the status of the ride!!?? I whipped out my smartphone and within a few type strokes I had found the key to my dilemma. I felt like I had found the Holy Grail of Disney park touring. The Star Tours 2.0 website would SEND AN ALERT TO MY PHONE, when soft openings were happening! Hallelujah! Now I could tour like a normal person (relatively speaking) , and still drop everything and run over if the ride opened.

No one was more pleased to hear this news than my poor DH, who immediately suggested lunch. We briefly considered eating at the Backlot Express, but I really wanted to try one of the butterfinger cupcakes I kept hearing about, and DH isn’t ever one to turn down cupcakes, so we headed in that direction.

When we got to Starring Roles, I made the executive decision to just eat a cupcake for lunch. Once I scoped out the size of the cupcakes, and did a mental calculation of cupcake size to head size ratio, and then realized that they were roughly equivalent, I realized that eating both a sandwich and a cupcake was not going to happen.

Dh, being the ever responsible one, decided to get a sandwich (the horror!) and eat whatever portion of cupcake I couldn’t finish. We had a PB&J for Everett, so we headed over to the check out with one cupcake roughly the size of my noggin, and one equally large sandwich.

I had picked up a fork and knife, figuring that was the best way to tackle the beast, and set myself to work devouring delicious chocolately, frostingy, butterfinger-goodness.

Meanwhile, DH was getting Everett’s lunch ready and laid out his PB&J. Well, he took one look at what mommy was eating, glanced back at his pathetic little sandwich, and then started screaming “Cupcake!” – well really more like “Cut-cake” but you get the idea. Hmmm, I hadn’t figured toddler food jealousy into my cupcake-for-lunch plan. I guess I could see it from his point of view, why on earth did he have to eat a lousy sandwich- while Mommy got a GIANT cupcake.

I tried appeasing him with a few bites, but that plan seriously wasn’t working. No way was he even going to consider eating a bite of sandwich while that delectable concoction of chocolately-goodness was in eyesight.

So, I did what any mature adult would do-

I moved to another table :lmao:

api-photo-3232ce46-d7fb-41f8-9f78-21c4038bdca09121005855250124759.jpg

view from my table

Once out of eyesight, DS calmed down and ate his sandwich, and when I had my cupcake fill, I switched places with DH, and he finished the cupcake.
I felt pretty smug about outwitting my toddler (trust me, it doesn’t always go my way), and after a quick check of the Star Tours status (nothin’ doin’), we headed out of Starring Roles and down Sunset Blvd.
