A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

I'm lovin' your updates! So, I have a confession to make, even though I love Disney, I had know idea that Duffy was Mickey's bear until I read this last update! :confused3 Now, I can finally tell my husband who he is since he asks me every time we see anything Duffy while in WDW. He likes to give me a hard time that I can never answer him as to who Duffy is. Well, that problem is solved now. Thank you!

That was very sweet of your mom to help with Everett in the night. My mom would be the same way. And there's no use in arguing with them, they will get their way.

Glad I could help clear up the Duffy situation!

Yes, I learned a long time ago (like at 15 ;) ) not to argue with my mother. She is an immovable object when her mind is made up, and I have to say she is pretty much always right. :)

Your mom is awesome!!! :goodvibes

I don't get the Duffy thing either :confused3

Thank you! I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful mother. :lovestruc

I think the Japanese fervor for Duffy is lost on us Americans. I got both of the girls a Disney Bear when they were just generic Disney bears, long before they became Duffy. Seems like Disney is trying a little too hard to get people to like this Duffy idea. The outfits are cute, but I'd rather see the cute outfits on a real Disney character.

I'm glad your mom was able to help and let you get some sleep.

I agree that I'd rather see Disney concentrate more on classic characters. If they were looking for a bear to dress up, they could have used Winnie the Pooh

:rotfl2:Barfy! That is too funny! How nice that your mom was willing to take shifts with you!

I am anxious to hear how Everett's night went!

We have an 8:15 ADR for the Crystal Palace in August. It will be our first time eating breakfast there! I am excited to get some nice pictures with the castle and few people in the background! Can't wait to read about your meal there!

Well, just because you asked- ;) I will have an update coming right up featuring our CP breakfast!

Episode 8: The update in which we hang out with some real characters

I picked up my phone and held my breath as I texted my mom, fully expecting bad news.

Me- So, how did it go last night
Mom- He’s asleep
(well, I figured, at least he fell asleep at some point)
Me- what time did he finally fall asleep
Mom- what are you talking about, he’s still asleep, he slept all night!

I stared at my phone in disbelief, how could this be possible, did someone come and do a literal baby swap in the night, was Everett still breathing?

The little stinker! Weeks of waking up over and over again, and tonight was the night he decided to sleep in. There was only one explanation for this- Grammies are magic.

Since Everett was still in snoozeland, I got myself all ready before heading over to Mom’s room.

When I walked in he was still sleeping! We had positioned his crib behind the privacy curtain, near the sinks, and my mom told me that she turned on the lights in the room, brushed her teeth, flushed the toilet, and he didn’t make a peep. He just wedged himself further into the corner of the crib, in silent protest of the world going on around him.

I went over and woke him up gently, and he positively bounded awake, all smiles and happiness. I got him dressed and slathered in approximately 17 cubic tons of sunscreen and we were all ready to go.

Mark had moved the crib into my Mom’s room (because she wanted to take him the entire trip) and we were out the door by 7:10. I wanted to be leaving at 7:00, but not bad, all thing considered.

We met up with Bryan, Amy and Shane outside the door, and they were going to take their car, and we would take ours, and meet up at the Crystal Palace. I know that generally it is better to take Disney transportation to the MK, but since it was so early, I didn’t want to risk being late for our ADR.

We arrived at the TTC with plenty of time to spare, and headed up the ramp to wait on the monorail. We were in line by 7:30 am, and I figured we’d get right on and be walking into a deserted Main Street by 7:50, which would give us 20 minutes of picture taking bliss.

DSCN1774.jpg

Well we waited, and waited and waited. The monorail was sitting in the station, the line kept growing, but no one was being allowed on. I knew this had to be the first monorail of the day, because the line was already long when we arrived, and I can’t imagine that many people start lining up for the parks two hours before opening. I was starting to sweat, my beautiful pictures, I felt them slipping through my fingers.

By 7:45 I was ready to hijack (I mean commandeer) the monorail for the public good, but right before I turned renegade, they opened the doors and let us all on. Two quick stops and we were pulling into the wonderful station with the green wrought iron that has always held a special place in my heart.

DSCN1776.jpg

Everett ready to start his Disney day

At this point I was in full commando-mode. I rushed off the monorail, powerwalked down the ramp, and scoped out the best bag line. I wanted to take pictures of the new flowerbeds and the “Let the Memories Begin” signage, but I was fixated on one goal- empty Main Street pictures.

DSCN1777.jpg

well, maybe there was time for one picture

Like an elite member of the special forces I was completely focused on my objective, maneuvering the stroller around slow moving pedestrians with ninja-like stealth, sailing through the biometric scan like a zen master, until, finally, the moment I had been dreaming of- an empty Main Street spread out before me!

DSC_0048.jpg

Main Street- here we are!

DSCN1779.jpg

It was amazing! I got Everett out of the stroller and let him (in his own words) “go-go”. Having the park so empty was priceless and watching Everett run up an empty Main Street is a memory I’ll treasure always. Having a completely open area to just run free was this toddler’s idea of Nirvana, and I think he would have run all the way up to the castle, if I didn’t stop him for the obligatory photos that I had been dreaming of.

One of those photos included ‘our photo’ the one we will take every year to document Everett’s growth through Disney vacations. The spot I chose was next to the Indian on Main Street, since I have a photo of me as a little girl in the same exact spot. Everett was, as usual, not interested in standing our sitting still, but we still managed to get some good shots.

Here is the one from when he was 10 months- what a difference 7 months can make!

I do have many more photos of us on a nearly empty Main Street, but they are photopass pictures, and I haven’t gotten my CD yet. For this trip I entered into a photopass share through facebook, and I am really happy I made that choice. In our pre-baby days we never used photopass, but during our Oct trip, we found that the photopass photographers got so many cute pictures of Everett interacting with the characters, and I nearly went broke buying them when I got home. This time around I wanted to get the photo CD, but $99 seemed like a really steep price. Someone on the Dis suggested I check out a photopass share on Facebook and so far so good. The woman running our share has been really on the ball, and now that everyone had returned home and editied their pictures, she has ordered the CD, and hopefully will ship out our copies soon. Once I get the additional pictures I will add then to this TR, but I hope the few that I did get with our camera will hold us over in the meantime.

or this one! :lovestruc

Once we had been photographed to my heart desire, I looked down at my watch to realize that we had to make tracks so we wouldn’t be late for our ADR. We sped on over toward the CP where we met up with Bryan, Shane and Amy who were waiting on the deck. Shane let me know that Steve was planning on joining us and was walking into the park at that very moment.
Excellent! I went up to the podium and checked us in, figuring that Steve would be here before our table was ready.

DSCN1780.jpg

This was the first time I had ever eaten at the CP (although my mother does claim that we did back in the 80’s, but I have no memory of that). I have to admit that the reason why we haven’t is one of my Disney shameful secrets- you see- I don’t really like the Winnie the Pooh characters.
There- I admitted it.

I think I might have liked them as a child, and I do remember watching a live-action Winnie the Pooh show on the Disney Channel and a Saturday morning cartoon featuring the 100 acre wood bunch. My dislike really began back in the early 90’s, before the Princess franchise, when Pooh and friends were EVERYWHERE. There was definitely a bit of over saturation going on, and my dislike crystallized when Disney removed my childhood favorite, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and replaced it with the Pooh one, and then to add insult to injury, Disney put a Pooh themed playground over 20,000 leagues!

It was like Pooh was dancing on the grave of my childhood.

Alright, so that might be a little dramatic and over the top, but if you can’t be over the top in a place where it is perfectly acceptable for grown adults to wear tiaras, I don’t know where you can be. ;)

As a side note, I have never once ridden the Winnie the Pooh ride, and I never will. If Everett wants to ride it he can go with his Daddy, and Mark has asked what if Everett asks to ride with me?- and I answered that there is no time like the present to start learning about standing up for principals you believe in. (and if that is not over dramatic I don’t know what is ;) )

Anyway, I booked this breakfast despite some reluctance, because I really wanted those empty castle pics, and because I figured we’d be perfectly situated for rope drop. I also was curious about this puffed French toast that everyone around here raves about.

Well in no time at all our little buzzer was going off and I gathered up our crew to enter for breakfast. I was then that I realized that Steve still hadn’t arrived. When asked if our entire party was present, I admit that I told a little fib and said that one member was in the restroom, but he would meet us inside. For all I knew that is exactly where he was and I wasn’t fibbing at all. I didn’t want to wait around and risk losing our table, because we had a very detailed touring plan that positively hinged on finishing breakfast before rope drop.

I let everyone else head over to the buffet while I got Everett situated, and then we switched. Steve showed up shortly after, and everyone was very happy to see him. I got my first view of the buffet, which was huge and filled with lots of yummy choices. I filled a plate for Everett which included fruit and eggs (which he declined) and puffed French toast and pancakes (which he ate with gusto). I usually don’t let him eat lots of sugary food, but we were on vacation, so I figured he deserved a treat.

Shortly after sitting down, the first character arrived. It was the proprietor of the establishment, Mr. Pooh himself. Now here was where one of my fears came into play, would Everett still like the characters, would he be shy and afraid? I shouldn’t have worried, my fearless toddler took to Winnie the Pooh like he was his long lost friend. He pet his soft nose and even gave him a big hug.

He couldn’t get enough and I was a little afraid that we’d get some tears when he moved on to the next table. Luckily Eeorye was fast on Pooh’s heels and Everett got to pet and love on another character.

At this point there was a little break in the character action, so I finally got to get up and get myself some food (and snap some buffet pictures away from the judging eyes of DH). I loaded up on the goodies (it is vacation after all) puffed French toast, breakfast potatoes, Mickey waffles, bacon, biscuits and gravy- yum!

DSC_0082.jpg

DSC_0083.jpg

While I was at the buffet Tigger came by, and Everett had a great time with him and DH, but I was back again in time for Piglet. I think that is all the characters, so I was happy that we got time with all of them. I thought that the charcters were great. They were wonderful with Everett and I thought that we had plenty of time with them. I was pleased with the breakfast overall. My mother did joke with me that since he seemed to love the Pooh characters so much that she was going to buy him all Winnie the Pooh stuff, but my dirty look silenced her.

DSC_0070.jpg

At about this time I realized that we had better get moving if we wanted to make rope drop. I was a little frazzled by the thought of getting the check split, and rushing off, and as I watched my friends get up for another round of the buffet, I had a revelation. We didn’t need to make rope drop. This was my vacation too, Fantasyland wasn’t going anywhere, and I wanted more puffed French toast.

At that point I decided to squash the commando voice inside of me, to sit back and just enjoy this wonderful breakfast with great friends and appreciate that the whole week still lay before me.

Here are some of the Main St pics from our photopass CD, sorry its a little out of sequence in the TR, but I just got the CD back!

I LOVE your Main Street photos, can't wait to see the photopass pictures. :thumbsup2

Good for you silencing the commando voice. :thumbsup2 It is nice to relax on vacation. ;)

Breakfast at CP looks like it was a lot fun. Everett sure did seem to love those characters. It's nice that he wasn't afraid of them.

The empty Main Street pictures are so cool! I bet that was a lot of fun, letting Everett have the run of the road without lots of people around.

Yippie! I am SO looking forward to those empty Main Street pics! And the puffed french toast! However, as the next update on my trip report will reveal, my DS is not quite so excited of seeing the characters...up close anyways! We will be better prepared in August and I will hold him before the characters get too close. I am trying very hard not to wish my whole summer away waiting for my next Disney trip, but you are making it very difficult!

Loved the update! All the pictures were awesome! I wanted to do breakfast at CP on our last trip, but Reid didn't really seem into the characters. So, I decided not to schedule it. But, I'm thinking we're going to do it no matter what on our next trip.

I can't believe Everett slept all night for your mom! Why are our kids always so much better behaved for their grandparents? Any time Reid spends the night with his Grammy (my mom), she says he was perfect, never has to tell him twice not to do something. The Reid that lives in my house has to be told about a hundred times a day not to do certain things. :confused3

Hi! I'm joining in a little late!
The Barfy title had me worried! I'm so glad it didn't mean what I thought it did!
A good gramma is such a blessing! We have one of those too, who would give up all sleep for a grandbaby!
Your pictures on main street are great! We had a CP ADR for 815, but next time I'm going for 8. Looks like even those few minutes made a difference.
I'm jealous that you were able to fully relax and forgo the rope drop. We really had to rush there because we had a mission that morning

Joining in late. I have to follow this TR closely. We are getting ready to take DD for her first trip in Sept/Oct. I believe our babies were born only a few days apart. Hopefully I can pick up some tips from you.

It was like Pooh was dancing on the grave of my childhood.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I saw the daggers your eyes were shooting when Pooh was greeting Everett:rotfl:

I never ate at the Crystal place before, my oldest went to Disney for the first time when he was 5 years old so he was not into Pooh at all.
And my second son went when he was 2 for the first time, but besides Mickey he only wanted to see........ Barney  He was a huge Barney fan. So we ended up spending two days at Universal.
My dark secret is that my two boys are much more into the Marvel characters then the Disney characters.
Maybe someone switch them at birth

Episode 9: the update where I make four grown men ride It’s a Small World

After satiating myself with yet more puffed French toast (which was delightful, more like cinnamon-sugar friend dough), I realized that it was time to get this show on the road. Everett was getting really antsy, despite my mother’s best attempts to keep him entertained, and we had some rides to hit before Everett’s haircut.

DSC_0077.jpg

I left Mark to handle the bill and I took Everett to the front of the restaurant. He found some chairs perfectly sized for a toddler ( or one of the seven dwarfs- in fact I think there were seven :rolleyes1) and he had a ball getting on and off of them.

DSCN1781.jpg

While he was entertained I took my chance to take some photos.

DSC_0078.jpg

DSC_0079.jpg

DSC_0080.jpg

sure, he looks innocent, but wait until he takes down your favorite ride

Since it was taking a while for everyone to get the bill settled, I volunteered to go and get fastpasses for Peter Pan. My mom joined me and I collected everyone’s ticket and we were on our way.

Now, here is another Disney shameful secret, I don’t understand all the hype over Peter Pan’s Flight. I’m as much of a fan of a good dark ride as the next Disney geek, but I’ll never get why everyone gets their panties in a wad over Peter Pan while poor Snow White lays neglected a mere few yards away. All that being said, Peter Pan seems like the sort of ride you are positively COMPELLED to ride with a toddler, and who I am to go against tried and true Disney logic. Therefore I diligently collected my fastpasses so we could join Peter and the Gang over in Neverland.

By the time we had fastpasses in hand most of our group had re-coalesced, and we stood around chatting and waiting for someone to take control.

Since no one seemed to be stepping up, I suggested we ride It’s a Small World, since it was right across from us and had a 5 min wait.

Here is how you know you are traveling with true Disney fans: when the four grown men in your party do not bat an eyelash at It’s a Small World, but in fact look excited about riding the classic attraction.

Off to It’s a Small World we went. This was my first time riding with the new configuration and I have to say that it makes a lot of sense to load through the old exit. That way the entire line is in the shade. It is so simple and brilliant I wonder why it took 40 years for Disney to figure it out!

I was really excited but also a little nervous and apprehensive about Everett’s first ride. This is where another of my fears came into play, I was worried that he wouldn’t like the ride, or perhaps like it so much that he would throw a major fit when it came time to disembark. Once again I shouldn’t have worried. Everett was positively enthralled with It’s a Small World, in fact, I don’t think he blinked the entire ride, he was trying so hard to take everything in. I wish I could know what was going through his head as he was riding, because I could almost literally see his brain expanding with all the new sights and stimulation.

When the ride ended we got off with no problem and Everett was all smiles and happiness. I’m sure he couldn’t believe that we had taken him to such a wonderful place!

After we got off, there was a short debate about what to do next. It was about 10:00 and Everett’s hair cut was at 10:30, our FPs for Peter Pan were good, but I was worried that we’d get held up and be late for the appointment. So it was decided that Shane, Bryan, Steve and Amy would take our tickets and go get FPs for Space Mountain and ride it, while Everett, DMom, DH and I took Everett for his haircut. We made plans to meet up afterward and we then parted ways.

Next up on our adjenda was get Everett all ready for his big haircut. I snapped some pictures on the way to the babycare station.

someday I'm going to ride on this

We took him for a quick diaper change, where we ran into a friendly duck. I do have a weakness for Disney ducks and DH is always on my case about stopping to take pictures of them.

DSC_0092.jpg

DSC_0091.jpg

maybe we could have hotdogs later?

The babycare center’s are wonderful places, and if you are going with a nursing baby or a child still in diapers you should definitely check them out. All the nursing rooms are wonderful, and as I passed by the one in the MK babycare center I got a little nostalgic about all the time Everett and I spent there on previous trips. I was a little sad that he was weaned because we had such wonderful relaxing times taking a break in the nursing rooms.

We headed back to the changing tables, which are nice because they are large and padded, much more comfortable than the ones in the restrooms, and it is usually not very crowded.

Once Everett was set we were getting ready to head on our way, but wait, what is that I hear over the PA? A marching band, coming down Main Street??!! Yes, it was one of the groups from the Magic Music Days program. I thought it was really odd to have them marching at 10:15 am, since there were no other parades at that time and it was during one of the prime times for guests to enter the park. We stopped and watched them go by and they were a very little band, so maybe that’s why they didn’t have them march before the 3:00 parade.

I was lucky enough to participate in the Magic Music Days program when I was in high school (yes I was a giant dork, not that things have changed much :rotfl: ) and I have very fond memories of traveling with my marching band to Disney. We went my sophomore year and my senior year and both times was an incredible experience. We marched the parade route, right before the step-off for the afternoon parade. We were a very large marching band though, about 200 students, so we were a good representation.

After that we headed down Main Street to the Harmony Barber Shop. It was pretty crowded so I was happy that I had a reservation. I went inside to check in, while DS, DH and DMom waited outside. I had us checked in quickly and was told that they’d be with us soon.

I waited outside, a little apprehensive and excited at the same time. I was about to face down another fear, would Everett be OK with his first haircut, or would it end up being an unmitigated disaster??!!:scared1:

I LOVE your Main Street photos, can't wait to see the photopass pictures. :thumbsup2

Good for you silencing the commando voice. :thumbsup2 It is nice to relax on vacation. ;)

Thank you for your compliment on my photos! I don't know how do do anything fancy, so I'm pretty much happy when "auto" turns out OK

Yes, I'm pretty bad at silencing the inner commando, but that morning I was successful!

Breakfast at CP looks like it was a lot fun. Everett sure did seem to love those characters. It's nice that he wasn't afraid of them.

The empty Main Street pictures are so cool! I bet that was a lot of fun, letting Everett have the run of the road without lots of people around.

It was really special to let Everett just run. He doesn't get to do that very often anywhere, so I think it may have been his favorite part of the trip!

You never know, your DS may have a change of heart before your trip, but I agree that its always good to have a back-up plan.

I often feel like I'm wishing away my life waiting for Disney trips, so I understand. It so hard not to when you are very excited! Its easier for me right now because I don't know when my next trip is going to be. :sad2: I know it will be next year, but it could be as early as February or as late as Oct. We'll have to see what next year holds.

The Reid that lives in my house has to be told about a hundred times a day not to do certain things. :confused3

I couldn't believe it either, I have no idea why he is so much better for my mom than for me. My mom says its because he knows how to push my buttons and loves getting a rise out of me, isn't that the truth!

Hi! I'm joining in a little late!
The Barfy title had me worried! I'm so glad it didn't mean what I thought it did!

I think that being there at 8 would mean no people at all! I was hoping to get there earlier, and I still don't understand why that monorail was just sitting around in the station. Didn't they know we had pictures to take!?

Joining in late. I have to follow this TR closely. We are getting ready to take DD for her first trip in Sept/Oct. I believe our babies were born only a few days apart. Hopefully I can pick up some tips from you.

Everett was a late Nov 2009 baby- how cool if they were about the same age! I hope I'll have some good advice, or maybe you can just learn from our mistakes :rotfl:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I saw the daggers your eyes were shooting when Pooh was greeting Everett:rotfl:

That is so funny about Barney! Everett has never seen Barney and I want to keep it that way as long as possible. I know it will be a losing battle once he starts pre-school, but I'd like to keep our house a Barney-free zone until then

Dh and I went to Universal a few years ago and had a great time. I'd like to get back soon because DH is a huge HP fan, but I don't think that Everett would have a great time. I don't remember there being a ton of things for little kids to do, but maybe that is because we spent all our time on the rollercoasters and ignored everything else.

I don't get the Peter Pan fuss either, I think it is just as good as the other dark rides. :confused3

Can't wait to hear how the hair cut turned out!

I couldn't believe it either, I have no idea why he is so much better for my mom than for me. My mom says its because he knows how to push my buttons and loves getting a rise out of me, isn't that the truth!

Haha...I think Reid likes to just push my buttons as well! Ed tells me that Reid is just so bad for me because he is so much like me. We're both stubborn & both want to have the last say in any matter. :rotfl:

Loved the newest update! I wish when we had taken Reid back in December I would've checked out the baby care center, since he was still in diapers. But, that's ok, whenever we do have baby #2, I plan on starting their Disney travels at the ripe old age of 1, so I'll check it out then!

I used to feel the same way about Peter Pan. Reid really enjoyed it on his first trip. But, for his 3rd bday in March, I had bought him the movie. Well, it has quickly become his favorite movie. As you've read in my TR, we ended up doing that ride A LOT this past trip. But, now I actually enjoy it because I can share in his joy of the ride. Perhaps the same will happen with Everett.

I can't wait to see how Everett does with his first haircut! I LOVE the idea of having his first haircut at MK!

Everett was a late Nov 2009 baby- how cool if they were about the same age! I hope I'll have some good advice, or maybe you can just learn from our mistake

I did a little math and I think Everett is 1 day older than Meadow. She was a turkey baby.

I'm glad Everett enjoyed his first ride! You will always remember the first one! Colby's first ride was Finding Nemo in Epcot. He loved it, too! This summer we got season passes to our little local amusement park. We have been there a couple times and Colby cries each time a ride is over!

Colby got his first haircut at Disney last year! They are WONDERFUL there! I hope you had a good experience, too!

The pictures of Everett and the characters at Crystal Palace are precious. I 'Awwwwwed' more than once when I was looking through them. :lovestruc

I'm glad you decided to just treasure the moment and spend more relaxing time with your friends. :thumbsup2

It's great that he slept through the night! It's nice that you got to enjoy breakfast. It really is hard to quiet that commando voice, isn't it?

I love an empty Main Street. We aren't usually breakfast TS people, so we've done CP, but not breakfast. (What was I thinking?) In January we did CRT as my 4 year old DS loves Princesses, and I just thought it would be neat to eat in the castle. It was good, and expensive, but I try not to look at how much things cost in Disney. I'd love to do it again, but mostly for the empty Main Street!

I don't get the Peter Pan fuss either, I think it is just as good as the other dark rides. :confused3

Can't wait to hear how the hair cut turned out!

Glad I'm not the only with a Peter Pan disconnect. Hopefully I'll have the haircut update soon!

Haha...I think Reid likes to just push my buttons as well! Ed tells me that Reid is just so bad for me because he is so much like me. We're both stubborn & both want to have the last say in any matter. :rotfl:

I used to feel the same way about Peter Pan. Reid really enjoyed it on his first trip. But, for his 3rd bday in March, I had bought him the movie. Well, it has quickly become his favorite movie. As you've read in my TR, we ended up doing that ride A LOT this past trip. But, now I actually enjoy it because I can share in his joy of the ride. Perhaps the same will happen with Everett.

I can't wait to see how Everett does with his first haircut! I LOVE the idea of having his first haircut at MK!

If you take your next baby while they are still nursing/in diapers I think that the babycare centers are one of Disney's best kept secrets. Its also a good place if you just need a break and the kiddos need a little downtime away from all the excitement. They always have a Disney movie on, and little chairs and tables so it could be relaxing spot for an older kid as well.

How awesome that Reid really connects with Peter Pan! Not to knock the newer films or anything, but I love that he appreciates a true classic!

I did a little math and I think Everett is 1 day older than Meadow. She was a turkey baby.

How cool, that they are so close in age! I'm sure that you identify a lot of similar behaviors (although hopefully only the good ones! :) )
