I went to china in 1992 and there was no tipping back then - so a change there then! My DH spent a year working in the Solomon Islands and it is not a tipping nation. We were told "we do not want to be a nation of beggars" !
(not that I am implying anything about other countries - it was just something i was not expecting to hear in honiara!)
I've become very relaxed about tipping and throw money about with gay abandon. mostly.
At disney they calculate the amount for you, so I just round up the figure and pay probably 19% or 20% in restaurants.
This year for the first time i decided to tip the valet $2 - I have no idea if that is good or not. (have tipped nothing in the past)
I tip $1 per bag to porters.
I didn't tip housekeeping anything - I was in DVC for 10 nights and only had 2 visits and just forgot. By the time I got to AKL I was not tipping that all - but there are no problems - it's not like they trash the room or anything.
I don't tip door men or check in peeps - I admit - never crossed my mind and I've not seen anyone else do it.
I only rode ME once and i didn't see anyone tip - and I didn't.
I've missed tipping lots of time and no-one has ever said anything to me.
I went on a private kayaking tour and was expecting to tip 20% - and the chap said "I'm the business owner - the fee is all mine anyway". But I be surprised if you score Bob Iger carrying your bags for you!
I ask the hotel check in/out to break notes down into one dollar bills for me - which they all did happily.
So I seem to be the same as everyone else! Just got to remember to include an extra 20% in my budget
