My father gets them up the sides of his back. They also seem to get really bad when he's stressed out. Your poor DD, I'll keep her in my thoughts. I know how painful they can be.

I hope she got the anti-viral medication that is available. If you take it soon after an outbreak - it's sooo much better! My Mother had a bout with shingles in September, 2000 and still has post-herpatic neuralgia, the after-effects of shingles. (the older you are, the worse the case can be).

I'll keep good thoughts that your DD has a mild and quick case of the darned things!

I had shingles a few years ago (I was only 27 at the time).
The anti-viral meds(acyclovir) really helped. I got them at the first sign of a blister, it stopped new ones from forming.
Mine started on the right side of my back and started to spread to my side, around the rib cage. My case was pretty mild, I think due to the meds and that I was young and otherwise very healthy.
My Dr also gave me vicadin for pain.

PS.....and just in case you weren't aware, anyone who has not had chicken pox can catch them from someone who has shingles. Dh got chicken pox right after my bout w/ shingles. Take about misery.....

DH had shingles many years ago. They do have medicines that help. It is painful and will run it's course. He had his on his stomach (one side) and they went around to his back and then went away. They are very red and hurt to tough.

I had shingles several years ago -- on the left side of my face. I nearly lost my left eye because the blisters leaked into my eye. I have two "ulcers" on my cornea now as a "souvenir." Tell your DD to be very cautious and keep an eye on any blisters forming on her neck or face. Her doctor should be able to prescribe anti-viral and pain medications.

DD13 had shingles this summer (and several of her friends ended up with chickenpox because of their exposure to DD when the rash first broke out). The doctor had never seen such a young person with them, although she had heard of it happening. They started on her left side and spread around her ribcage. She, too, was put on acyclovir. Once she began taking it the pain went away and new blisters stopped forming. If your daughter can get a prescription I'd recommend it.

I've been lurking and it took this thread to get me to register!

My daughter has had shingles TWICE! Once when she was five and it was horrible. They went around the nerve path on her shoulder. By the time I realized what they were, she had about four quarter-sized sores. Like everyone else has mentioned, once she started meds she was better. I think she was put on Zovarax (sp?).

The second time she got them, I knew right away what it was and got her on meds asap. It wasn't nearly as bad the second time, but boy was she in pain the first time. I'm talking screaming, bloody-murder.

She also started a chicken-pox outbreak at her school the during the first bout.

Just and FYI that if she's friends with anyone who is pregnant she may want to stay away for a few days while she's contagious (although I think her most contagious time may have already passed).

Yes, sometimes stress can bring them on. I had them when my brother was terminally ill.

Just make sure to watch them around the eye. They can be very dangerous in that area.

I still have pain at the site where my shingles started and it's been around five years.

DH took care of our kids until it was gone. My Dr. told me to keep them away because she didn't want them getting chicken pox.

Guess who has never had chicken pox or the vaccine though? Me!!! Neither has her father-in-law..

Oh, no! Mark your calendar for 21 days from your last contact. That was dead-on with my oldest DD when she got them from her cousin. Hopefully you'll be okay.

What I always thought was strange about my daughter's case, was that she never had chicken pox. At least not that I could tell. My older DD had it when younger DD was only six weeks old. I never once saw a spot on her and she never acted ill, but you're supposed to have to have had chicken pox in order to get shingles.

The second time she got them, my doctor was concerned enough to test her for all sorts of disorders that result in low auto-immune system, such as HIV and cancer. Luckily, it'll always remain a mystery why she gets it, because they were all negative. It was sure scary though!

My adult DD was just diagnosed with shingles this morning.. They're working their way up her arm (from the elbow area) and the doctor says they will probably continue up to her shoulder, neck and one side of her face..

Anyone else here ever gone through a bout of shingles?

Well, i'd consider changing doctors, because shingles (herpes zoster) is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, and lies on ONE nerve root. Given the fact that more than one nerve supplies the sensation on the arm, neck and face it would be HIGHLY improbable for shingles to move and involve all these areas in the one attack.
