At my place of employment, we have a wellness program. Julie the Wellness Person came up with a 90 challenge for the people in the store. Since I am now in training for the WDW half marathon, I signed up for it. My challenge is to lose 25 lbs. and be able to jog for two miles straight. My not-so-Dbf laughed at my expectations. I'm having trouble breaking down my goal into little baby steps. Any pointers, support, ideas from anyone here?

Oh yes, I have new shoes so I can get on the tredmill and the weather is turning so we might be able to get out and jog outside. Woohoo!

90 days is 1 day shy of 13 weeks... 13 x 2 = 26... so aim for 2 lbs per week.

Sorry, can't help you on the running thing... my weight is still "walking" stage.

have you searched for any walk/jog programs? i used to have a training program from a fitness magazine that was walking/jogging combo to ease yourself from walking to jogging. i know it's tempting to just jump on the TM and run; but be careful -- i have tendonitis from trying to jog too far too quickly. i was fit cardio-wise but my bod was not used to running. that said, i become a powerwalker and enjoy it more than running! anyhoo -- good luck!

A good place to start is can you walk for 2 miles without stoping? Next would be to see how far you can job w/o stoping. Slowly increase this amount until you can job the entire 2 miles.

I am a Walk Away the Pounds by Leslie Sansone fan. I love her dvd's (and VHS). She has one called walk & job where she does intervals of jogging in them. She has has a 5 mile advanced that has a 1 mile segment of job intervals. And lastly her new system Walk Slim has a 4 mile that is intervals of jogging and a 2 mile that has intervals of jogging. Now that new Walk Slim is only available in a set that comes with both the 2 & 4 mile, along with a 3 mile (walking only) and a strength training one. The others (advanced 5 mile and walk & job) are available seperately. In fact I picked the 5 mile up at walmart and walk & jog on a combo dvd at target. I think any of these would be helpful in training to do a marathon and jogging 2 miles.

First off.... :welcome: This is a wonderful place to be and very motivationg and inspiring.

Now, on to the question at hand..... I recently started working out again after a long (ok, very long) hiatus. I spent too many hours on the events boards and was inspired to start running and complete to WDW 1/2 next January. You can see from my siggy that I am not a small person. To be honest with you, even when I was in shape, I was not a runner. However, I started small. People on these boards suggested jogging for 30 seconds and then walking for 4 minutes and alternate like this for 30 minutes. (Don't forget a warm-up and cool-down.) I know it doesn't sound like much, but at first those 30 seconds about did me in. Now, I am currently up to jogging for 1 minute and walking for 3. Again, it doesn't sound like much, but for me, it is huge. I have not had to stop because of injuries or anything like that, and I just know I would have had to if I had done anything more strenous. As my pace increased, I had increased my distance as well. Starting this week, I am going to increase this to 40 minutes. I will also soon increase my jog time as well since jogging for a full minute has gotten pretty easy.

Anyway, that is what I'm doing, and so far, so good. I can see results in my stamina. I am losing weight -- slowly, but surely, and I know I'm losing inches. (This morning I wore a skirt to church I would not have been comfortable wearing just a couple of months ago.) I have been sore but have not suffered injury (shin splints, heel spurs, etc.). I also mix up the wogging with my elliptical machine and workout videos/DVDs.

Good luck to you. You can do it.

Hi! I just wanted to add and say that if you go over to Prevention.com/walking they have a whole section on preparing for a marathon, half or jogging or walking to lose weight. I thought the site was pretty easy to use. And they will set up a calendar for you to follow for your workout program to build you up.

I think it's great that you are trying to get fitter and that you are deciding to do the 1/2. My sister and I just decided to do it as well. And when I told my DH I got the same reaction. A mix of disbelief and concern for me. He said- "But you don't like to run." Well yes but I've decided i want to do it. And since then he's been very supportive. And I even surprised myself and the next day, after deciding to do the run, we walked/jogged 3 miles so I could see if I maintained the 15min/mile you need for the 5K. And I did it! I was psyched! So that really boosted my confidence.

Only you can decide what you can do. Good Luck!

I have osteoarthritis & heal spurs. I thought my walking days were over. 3 weeks ago I started walking 7/10 of a mile & did that for a week. Week 2 I did the 1 1/2 mile. Then I started to add a run I used a hill to do it. First it was maybe 50 yards. Now I can do 100 yards. I'm building up we. My goal is a 5k. I have lost 11lbs & DH17lbs in 5 weeks. Good Luck!
