9-month old nephew needs surgery (updated)

A co-worker's 5 yr old daughter had a tumor removed and a permanent shunt put in, and she's doing great! They move the shunt around with a magnet when needed...pretty amazing stuff.

Bob, I have some experience in this area since DS 6 always had a very large head and had to see a Ped. Neurologist at the same age as your nephew. I think the term they used was hydrocephaly?

In any case, he had an MRI at 9 months old and did not have excess fluid but the doctors did tell me that the procedure your nephew may be having is generally very successful and he should go on to live an absolutely normal life.

Has your nephew had any issues with seizures, dizzyness, disorientation or lack or balance?

My son's head is bigger than mine actually, and DH had to get him fitted for an adult sized bike helmet. His head circumference was always off the charts and it's now 23 inches around. I joke about it to him now and tell him he's got a lot of brains in his head, but I remember how we were always so nervous about his head being bigger and bigger at each Dr. visit and the MRI almost put me over the edge.

That term sounds familiar. My sister said something like that yesterday when she was relaying info to me.

That's what I've heard. Apparently, my brother's next door neighbor had to have the same procedure on their daughter (at around the same age) and she's doing great.

Not that I'm aware of, no.

I've been there with my ds, Bob--albeit under different circumstances--so I certainly understand your family's concern for this sweet, precious boy.

When Chris was three, he had a temporary shunt put in after developing fluid on his brain while hospitalized with bacterial meningitis. Although it was a terribly frightening time, I tried to keep in the forefront of my mind that this was a necessary procedure, and that those who were performing it on him were the utmost of professionals. After many prayers, tears and deep, deep breaths, the surgery was a success--as was his treatment for the meningitis.

I'll be thinking of this little guy and your whole family, with all my best in good wishes and prayers.

My DD has Hydrocephalus and had a VP Shunt placed when she was 1 day old and had a replacement surgery 3 years ago.If you would like more information about the VP shunt and the surgery I can send you some links.....

FWIW..... This is a simple surgery by Neurological standards and causes only mild discomfort in most cases. If your nephew is anything like my DD (and several other children I know who have been through this) he will be up and playing as soon as the anesthetic wears off
