It actually angers me. NC isn't one of the states right now but I am still offended that they are going to insist on the girls getting this but there is nothing for the boys. If the girls are going to get the STD...who are they going to get it from?

I would like to offer my opinion on this from a medical standpoint. First, I do not agree with government mandating vaccinations, except in the case of communicable disease that can spread in schools (Measles, Mumps, Hepatitis and yes even Chicken Pox's). I will return to chicken pox later. Second point and the most important is that you are all missing the point of the HPV vaccination. You are all under the impression that it is for the protection against the STD Human papillomaviruses, which it is. The problem with this is that it is not intended to stop the HPV as a STD (like a syphilis or GC vaccine) but for the prevention of cervical cancer in your daughters. It just happens that there is strong evidence that suggest that HPV is associated with cervical cancer. Yes the vaccine is new. Yes the vaccine does work. The problem that the public has with new vaccines is that you think that one shot should take care of the problem. With any new vaccine that stimulates the bodies immune system is that we are not sure how long the immunity lasts. Vaccines would never be marketed if they were required to determine what the 10-20 year outcomes of vaccine were required before marketing. This vaccinine has the potential for preventing a certain kind of cancer in your daugthers. Down the road a second or third booster may be required. If it is, would you not be willing to have your daughters receive a booster to prevent cervical cancer. Why am I harping on this? I have seen too many young and older women die of cervical cancer during my time in the hospital. 10,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year with at least 4,000 deaths. The vaccine needs to be administered early for that immunity to be developed. If you wait too long to administer it you may not be successful in stopping the virus. It is not about STD! It is about protecting your daughters form cervical cancer. I would also advocate the vaccination of boys as well to try to end this disease, but insurance companies will not go for this. The dicision is up to you as parents on whether you want to protect your children.

OK, I have my flame proof clothes on so let me have it.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programing.

Ruby survived her track meet tonight and not only that, she was the only one from our school that won her 300 hurdles heat! (apparently they had 4 races in 300 hurdles, one girl from our school vs 5 other girls from 5 other schools in each race. The one Ruby did, she won! It's so awesome, her first track meet and she gets 1st place... and here I was just hoping she wouldn't injure herself. LOL

:cheer2: :cheer2: Way to go Ruby!!

Once I got all caught up, which I am now, I was going to say the very same things. And I would add that when our daughters are cute and precious and young...like yours, Lisa, Shelley, Judy, etc... we really don't ever want to consider that they might engage in certain activities until they are married, or at least into their 20's. And we all hope that we are going to be "good parents" and teach them about abstinence, etc. And we ARE good parents, and we DO teach them these things.
BUT.....the reality is.....most don't wait. Parents are the last thing young kids are thinking about when they are together and think they're "in love". And I know that we can say that we won't allow them to be in a situation where they might be able to "go too far".....but kids are determined creatures, and where there's a will, there's a way. Never say never. I think the vaccine is a great idea.
But I DO agree that government should not be involved.

No, I don't have a problem having the family get the Hep shots for this cruise...and we will all get them. I will have to contact BCBS to find out what they do for that.

:thumbsup2 Yeah, make sure you know what your coverage/policies are so you can stand firm against unkowning medical clerks.

I knew that our BCBS coverage was fairly decent but found out just how good it is when we moved up here. :snooty: First, when DW takes DS in for a well-baby check, she never pays anything, no co-pay, no shot fees, nothing. Then she took him to a new doc up here for the 18mo shot series and while waiting to check in, the clerk was grilling the patient ahead of them because she didn't have a medical card for her DS! Well under our plan, one card-one family...and to boot, they FINALLY got away from using SSNs as the idetifier and instead, issued assigned ID numbers :)

DW checks in and runs into the first problem...DS does not have a SSN. She may as well have said he was born on Mars because they totally freaked! :rolleyes2 When she insisted that yes, their computer will process a patient with no SSN and yes, BCBS will pay their claim with no SSN they just didn't get it. :sad2: Problem #2...one family-one card, meaning BCBS only uses my assigned ID number...they freaked about that too! :sad2: The final blow was when the clerk didn't see a copay on the card for baby visits! :faint: We have a copay for emergency room and regular doctor visits but not for anything for the baby! Well they'd never heard of such a thing so they wound up calling BCBS to verify... ::yes:: BCBS pretty much confirmed everything (and more) that DW had been trying to tell them...

Insofar as the repo cruise is concerned, CDC doesn't show any vaccines being required or even necessary for the areas we'll be in. But if anything changes, we'll go to a travel medicine center because they're specialists and regular docs won't necessarily carry them. We'll get reimbursed for any vaccines.

Good night everyone. I'll chat with you guys tomorrow evening. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

:rotfl: Maybe they were assuming they Stinky Teen boys wouldn't make it past the Dad's with the Haggar "Do It to It" waistbands!? (click Boyfriend) But according to news articles, they are indeed giving the vaccine to boys in the EU and Australia...once again something that's shown to be safe overseas still has to be "considered", "studied" yada yada yada in the States.

Meningitis is a virus that can be transmitted between anyone. My problem is that this vacine is for an STD. I should have more control over my 11 yo as far as this subject goes and hopefully she will wait much longer than age 12.

One mom in an article I read said she's going to get it for her DD6 and DD8:
She says she'll give it to her girls in the next few years, but doesn't plan on having a detailed discussion with them about HPV and how it's transmitted.

"I don't tell them why they're getting a measles shot. They just know they're getting a vaccine, they need to have this."

Lisa would like to see more long-term data, but she believes the benefits outweigh the risks.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!

Well said, Roger.
Now...where is my soap box??

I don't care how you can "catch" it. HPV is nasty. It can cause cancer. It can kill. I wish all cancer could be cured with a vaccine. Sign me up. Sign my kids up. I don't see the HPV vaccine as a license for promiscuity. There are plenty of other things to scare teens from sex: pregnancy, AIDS, other STDs, in addition to the things they may or may not learn from their parents and their faith - you know, all the things most of us were concerned about whether we waited until marriage or not.

Having said that - I truly respect the opinions of everyone who has posted on this subject. What it comes down to is that we will all make the decision that we consider best for our families.

(Gracefully exiting soapbox.)
HEY, it's my imagination, I can be graceful!

:lmao:

Hopefully folks will focus more on the cancer-prevention nature of the vaccine...if they said it would prevent testicular cancer I think there would be a bigger run on that vaccine than the flu shots a couple of years ago because men would be lining up for 2 or 3 shots and dragging their sons along as well! ::yes::

DW was questioning the need for the various vaccines of common childhood diseases after all, she survived mumps, chicken pox etc. So she asked our old doc about that..."nobody died from mumps" was her opinion and she'd rather not subject DS to a bunch of shots or unnecessary medications.

The doc agreed but pointed out that in NM, where we lived at the time, there was a significant part of the population with a less-than "ideal" level of healthiness about them...and were we in an area like Iowa, Chicago or NC then she wouldn't worry so much. But because of the high numbers of unvaccinated people, DS was actually at a higher risk level of contracting a disease--not just plain mumps, but some particularly nasty variant. Besides, NM has several cases of west nile virus, hantavirus and even human plague every year. I worked with a guy who was striken with the plague :sad1: He lived, lost 60 pounds but doesn't recommend the plague diet :guilty:

Well, I can't believe it, but this is my 100th post on this thread!!! Considering I've on the Dis for over 3 and 1/2 years and I only have 257 posts in that time, I'm shocked at myself!!! I guess that's nearly 40% of all my posts on this thread?!?!?!?!?! :teacher: Holy Moly!!!

SO while I am up ranting by myself . . .

Reading about people who received e-mails about the new ships reminded me of something.

I think Disney hates me.

We've been to a park (WDW or DL) every year since we had kids in 1998.
We had WDW passes when we lived in FL
Cruised DCL 2x - '08 will be 3, we're on an every other year schedule (CC members, right?)
I buy everything with my Disney Visa
Disney shareholders (OK 2 shares, but still!)
Buy oodles of stuff from Disney Shopping
Disney Insider e-mail list

HAVE I EVER RECEIVED A POSTCARD, E-MAIL, OR ANYTHING ELSE????
NNNNOOOOOOOO! We've certainly never been family of the minute for any department.

I even had to call 3 months after our last cruise to see if they would send me the little CD kit-thingy I found out about on the Dis.

Come on Mickey - where's the love?

 Guess, I wasn't ranting to myself!

How's it goin' Sooz?

I really do wish we had a Target. Right now I wish it were at least 40 degrees warmer (it's -10).

BUT - this is about a block from my house.

I'll take this any day.
