In my humble opinion, most folks aren't taught to work as kids so they never think they have to do it as adults. It's a rough lesson for many. Now, my kids won't ever be able to claim that . . LOL:snooty:

I couldn't agree more....

... I grew up in my parents' business... a furniture and general merchandise store (about 5300') which they ran 365 days a year 11 to 7 or 6.... and til 9 or 11 on saturdays, holidays and really... as long as folks were out walking abuot we stayed open. So ... I grew up wondering what a vacation was.... I was seriously draming of one day going CAMPING as other kids spoke of it. My daily highlight was where we'd go for dinner and collecting my "pay" in case I sold anything that might warrent something extra. Generally, my parents paid me hourly and I renegotiated every now and then for more pay or a bigger percentage of what I sold. I learned to respect how hard it was to earn an AFTER-TAX and AFTER-EXPENSE dollar. One of regular routines was watching for shop-lifting teams that were generally easy to spot. We have lots of stories on the sorts we dealt with. Plus we talked a bit of how we invested and saved what we had. Really... there were lots of ideas thrown out on all sorts of things. Including everything involved in running the business.

Frankly... I think I would enjoy running a business again that dealt with the public. I sort of MISS the horse trading and counting of cash. In my occupation now there is almost no live cash passed and the negotiations are sort of "set" and less fun to me. In my family business it was positively entertaining most of the time. Smiles all around and ocassionally it was a laughable process (in a nice way). Lots of our patrons would return year after year to complete a look with matching pieces.

At any rate, my spouse knows I would work it 365 days a year and refuses to let me run a brick and motar retail or wholesale business. Although I speak of doing a franchise all the time as a business we could leave temporarily if it were "turn key". I think it would be good to stay busy and entertained when we retire fully someday.

I'll bet some folks think I'm totally crazy in that I'd buy into a 365 day a year (potentially) occupation IN RETIREMENT ... for fun.

I really do wish we had a Target. Right now I wish it were at least 40 degrees warmer (it's -10).

BUT - this is about a block from my house.

I'll take this any day.

Wow that is beautiful!!!

My daughter was just looking at the Eagle RIver Alsaka images I googled and she said this one (above) taken overlooking the Eagle River was "pretty"... I would rather say it is hauntingly beautiful. There's still so much I want to see with my own eyes - places like Eagle River... northern lights... and everywhere else I have not been around the world. I've lived 99% of my life within about 75 miles of where I was born in LA.... and maybe some day I'll have a crack at getting around (long term).

Oh... and your photo above is a nice view.... :thumbsup2

Hmm - DH's first retirement will be when he is 42. He has aspirations to be the cart & sticker guy at Wal-Mart.

Which is really funny because we don't even shop at Wal-Mart, even though there is one less than a mile from our house.

:thumbsup2 On the work thing to. I teach college classes here and there & some students seem shocked when I expect them to actually do the work and hold them to timelines, etc.

Well, I can't believe it, but this is my 100th post on this thread!!! Considering I've on the Dis for over 3 and 1/2 years and I only have 257 posts in that time, I'm shocked at myself!!! I guess that's nearly 40% of all my posts on this thread?!?!?!?!?! :teacher: Holy Moly!!!

You think you got it bad....

I threw on 1200+ posts here and that's about 28% of all my posts... those figures are unaudited.... <chuckles>

Yeah, sometimes the lights come out.

One of my favorite memories will be sitting in our hot tub looking at the northern lights. I'll take that over DC suburbia and traffic any day - even if you do throw in a Target & a Kohl's!

This brings to mind something similar I encountered in an old friend.

We were meeting for lunch - the 3 of us ... old friends and the 3rd pal arrived a bit late... he was all bent out of shape and undiplomatic and all. Well... this attitude was just the beginning... in the months to come he was unlike what we remembered and he was openly condescending towards others ... leaving me to wonder what he might be saying about ME behind my back. It was that sort of conversation. An "I'm better than you" sort of thing ... and somewhat snotty towards others all the time.

We began to openly wonder what and how he could possibly work with others in a team setting... let alone even have CONTACT with anyone in a gainful way.

So... the life skills we need to flourish in life are invaluable... those which you are encouraging in your students... go ahead and press them (if that's what it takes) and finesse them into embracing the work ethic - on a schedule.

To think - the fellow I'm talking about got a Phd from a top end school with nobel laurets on staff... and was an assistant professor at a University in California .... until he resigned. It makes me wonder sometimes...

HOWEVER... he had family issues with a Dad who was terminally ill.

OK... we're gonna lose th DIS servers any minute... gotta go too...

TTFN!

I'm off to bed. 'Night Crash.
Don't forget to turn off the lights.

Your views must sometimes look like DIS...

That's pretty cool...

if I'm up tonight when the DIS servers come back I'll post images of the "dream" log cabin/home I would build for my spouse and I if and when we ever fully retire!

 Good Morning Crew

The only problem going to bed so early last night is, here it is 3am and I'm wide awake. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

TGIF!!!!!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Nope, not yet. I honestly blamed it on Bill (DH). He has always worked out of the house and I just thought he was secretly wasting water. Now that I am working at home as well, it has not gotten a lot better. I probably will have someone come look at it. Honestly I am not even sure where the water meter is. If is where you cut off the water in front - that has so much debris, cobwebs etc in there, it had not been opened in years.
I am very happy to report that the electric and gas bill has gone way down since I am here all day. I flip off lights all day.

Another way to check for leaks is, find out where your water meter is, then make sure no water is running in the house. Look at the dial on the meter, if it is moving even ever so slighty, you have a leak somewhere or a toilet might be stuck. We had an elerly couple a few years ago in town that used over 200,000 gallons of water in one quarter because their upstairs toilet was constantly running amd they didn't know because they couldn't get upstairs to fix it. When I read the meter and reported the high consumption to the couple they had a plumber come out and fix it, the next quarter, their consumption was back down to less than 10,000 gallons.

Alan DH is having knee surgery tomorrow. I found out yesterday--he swears he told me a couple of weeks ago. I am sure that everything will be fine--but I really don't think he told me............maybe he did while I was trying desperately to catch up on this thread. It really made me feel bad.

I trust all goes well for you DH's knee surgery!!! I've had 7 knee operations over the years, so I do feel for your DH.

That's one reason I had such a trying day yesterday, my left knee was so stiff because of the weather, I could hardly bend it at all.

Waring Soap Box Time

I would like to offer my opinion on this from a medical standpoint. First, I do not agree with government mandating vaccinations, except in the case of communicable disease that can spread in schools (Measles, Mumps, Hepatitis and yes even Chicken Pox's). I will return to chicken pox later. Second point and the most important is that you are all missing the point of the HPV vaccination. You are all under the impression that it is for the protection against the STD Human papillomaviruses, which it is. The problem with this is that it is not intended to stop the HPV as a STD (like a syphilis or GC vaccine) but for the prevention of cervical cancer in your daughters. It just happens that there is strong evidence that suggest that HPV is associated with cervical cancer. Yes the vaccine is new. Yes the vaccine does work. The problem that the public has with new vaccines is that you think that one shot should take care of the problem. With any new vaccine that stimulates the bodies immune system is that we are not sure how long the immunity lasts. Vaccines would never be marketed if they were required to determine what the 10-20 year outcomes of vaccine were required before marketing. This vaccinine has the potential for preventing a certain kind of cancer in your daugthers. Down the road a second or third booster may be required. If it is, would you not be willing to have your daughters receive a booster to prevent cervical cancer. Why am I harping on this? I have seen too many young and older women die of cervical cancer during my time in the hospital. 10,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year with at least 4,000 deaths. The vaccine needs to be administered early for that immunity to be developed. If you wait too long to administer it you may not be successful in stopping the virus. It is not about STD! It is about protecting your daughters form cervical cancer. I would also advocate the vaccination of boys as well to try to end this disease, but insurance companies will not go for this. The dicision is up to you as parents on whether you want to protect your children.

OK, I have my flame proof clothes on so let me have it.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programing.
I will agree with you, but most importantly I definitely agree with what I bolded above.
I think the issue I have with this vaccine is that it is different than the other vaccines. I know many vaccines are mandatory (with some waivers for various reasons, I believe... don't know much about those though because I've never tried to be waived of any vaccines for my children) for children to go to PS and such, but those are NOT vaccines for something that are sexually related... for diseases or conditions that are contracted from having sexual relations. My 2nd problem with this is that our governor has apparently decided he's GOD and need not go thru the proper channels to make sure that this decision is what has been decided by people other than just himself and what the people want. He has even said that if a bill is passed to overturn his decision that he will veto it. I hate people in political positions that try to force their personal opinions on everyone against their will. They are supposed to be serving the majority, not dictating their whims and the masses must obey come hell or high water (as in God complex). And I actually liked Governor Perry before this! Honestly! But come on, atleast try to pretend you care what the people that elected you want and/or believe is right for their children. We elected you, don't then turn around and act like we can't make wise decisions... if we're fools that need a handholding then what does that say about us electing you? (said to Gov. Perry ofcourse)

I understand what the vaccine is for and how it may help many, but I just don't like the WAY it's being forced on us against our will.

:cheer2: :cheer2: Way to go Ruby!!
Thanks, I'll tell her you cheered for her. She'll probably remember you. I'll just tell her you're that lady that came to take pictures of us at the dinner table on pirates night. :)

Once I got all caught up, which I am now, I was going to say the very same things. And I would add that when our daughters are cute and precious and young...like yours, Lisa, Shelley, Judy, etc... we really don't ever want to consider that they might engage in certain activities until they are married, or at least into their 20's. And we all hope that we are going to be "good parents" and teach them about abstinence, etc. And we ARE good parents, and we DO teach them these things.
BUT.....the reality is.....most don't wait. Parents are the last thing young kids are thinking about when they are together and think they're "in love". And I know that we can say that we won't allow them to be in a situation where they might be able to "go too far".....but kids are determined creatures, and where there's a will, there's a way. Never say never. I think the vaccine is a great idea.
But I DO agree that government should not be involved.
I agree with you also, especially your last sentence.
I am not naive in thinking that all girls, including my own, will remain abstinent until marriage. However, my 13yr old has NO TIME NOR PLACE for such things to occur, unless it was somehow possible to happen at school. And them's the facts jack. I know that not all parents keep up with their kids and there whereabouts like we do though... but likewise I don't think it's the goverments place to then make it mandatory for everyone due to some children not being cared for properly by their parents. I mean how is a 5th grader having a CHANCE to be promiscous at that age? If they have the opportunity at that age- then the parents aren't parenting their children, IMO. My daughter goes nowhere that is not extremely supervised by those that would never allow such things to take place- such as in school, school activities supervised by myself or DH if there would be an opportunity for any behavior we would deem unacceptable at her age, Girl scouts meetings, church, and THAT'S IT. I don't even allow her to spend the night at other girls houses- they want to sleep over with Ruby... they'll do it here (that's for other reasons as well- such as I don't know these children's parents and whether they have guns in the home/etc.)
Now all of this may change in the future as she is getting older, but at that point *I* would make the decision to protect her in any way I deem necessary (and this would probably be one of them!) -I have problems with it being mandated by the governor before *I* know that she would even have opportunity to do such activities!
(for example: if I were to start letting her spend the night at friends homes, start dating, and/or going to any activity- even if supposedly supervised- without us there to monitor her behavior ourselves- I would probably at that point want to make sure that she was protected "just in case" she became sexually active without my knowledge. But until that point, the vaccine is totally unnecessary for her and I don't like someone telling me I have to give her a vaccine protecting her against something I'm already making sure CANNOT HAPPEN. KWIM?)
For instance if they made it mandatory at a later time (higher age group) I could be more willing to agree and understand their reasoning on this because a lot more children have the means and opportunity to be promiscuous when they are older teens and less supervised at times. But to say they need at the 5th grade age level to me is just giving the go ahead for parents who IMO are not parenting their young children as they should to go ahead and continue to not parent as they should- it's okay... we'll just force this vaccine to protect your children you obviously don't care a whole lot about. Seriously, that's how I feel! No 5th grader should be ABLE to have the opportunity to engage in such activities! That's entirely too young to be unsupervised in areas where they would be with the opposite gender and have the opportunity to engage in such activities with said opposite gender! We're talking 10yr olds! That age, atleast in Texas, they aren't even supposed to be left alone at home yet!

It always bothers me when things become mandatory for my children for reasons involving other parents not protecting their children themselves or because of other parents lack of parenting for their children. And I'm sorry but there is parental issues if a 5th grader has the means and opportunity to be promiscuous! Period. Be a parent for crying out loud! (is what I say to the parents where their 5th grader would be able to be promiscuous) Unless someone can tell me this can be contracted thru holding hands and kissing, and until then, I say that children this young should not be in a situation where they are unsupervised enough to be able to 'do the deed'- KWIM?

I have very strong feelings on this subject and we are personally being affected by this, so I'm not just talking about something going on somewhere else or "might" happen here someday- it's happenign to us now. and I hope I haven't offended anyone reading my post. We are Christians and teach abstinence to our children and then back it up by being so involved in our children's lives that atleast up until this point (ofcourse we have not had an older teenager yet!) it would be completely impossible for our children to NOT be abstinent... whether they like it or not. KWIM?

As you can probably guess, I also oppose strongly things like passing out condoms at school... giving out birth control to minor children without having to make parents aware their child was given such/etc- (and definitely opposed to allowing minors to have abortions without parents even being made aware of such) which I'm sure many will disagree with me but I just have a major problem with others giving my children "permission" to engage in activities where a condom/etc. would be needed.
You may think I'm wrong, but I'm entitled to my opinion when it involves MY minor children. They are mine, not the governments or anyone else's. I'm responsible for them until they are 18, let me parent then!

These are just my opinions relating to MY children. Please do not interpret this post as in any way saying that someone else's opinions relating to their children must be wrong if they disagree with me. My opinions are mine, and non-debatable... but everyone (IMO) is entitled to their opinions and feelings about their own children as is their right. I know that my feelings/opinions are not "right" for everyone, only for us.

SO while I am up ranting by myself . . .

Reading about people who received e-mails about the new ships reminded me of something.

I think Disney hates me.

We've been to a park (WDW or DL) every year since we had kids in 1998.
We had WDW passes when we lived in FL
Cruised DCL 2x - '08 will be 3, we're on an every other year schedule (CC members, right?)
I buy everything with my Disney Visa
Disney shareholders (OK 2 shares, but still!)
Buy oodles of stuff from Disney Shopping
Disney Insider e-mail list

HAVE I EVER RECEIVED A POSTCARD, E-MAIL, OR ANYTHING ELSE????
NNNNOOOOOOOO! We've certainly never been family of the minute for any department.

I even had to call 3 months after our last cruise to see if they would send me the little CD kit-thingy I found out about on the Dis.

Come on Mickey - where's the love?

LOL Join my club!
Multiple trips to WDW, have had annual passes before, cruised once, major shopping throughout the years at disney online (even before we ever went to WDW!), etc. etc. like you said... and we can't even beg, steal or borrow (so to speak) anything from Disney. Including promised castaway club member information! (finally got the numbers via email though- but the promised kit still hasn't arrived- we cruised 8mo ago) I never received a postcard (and so many apparently receive those with discount codes and such!) and the only emails I receive are about disney mobile phones and stuff like that LOL so we're on SOME email list apparently- but not the good one with the good info! I agree, come on Mickey... where's the love?

Whoa, I got all serious and even more verbose than usual (for me) in my last post. sorry... I promise that's the last on the subject from me. :lmao: I tried to be extremely brief on how I felt on the matter when it was first brought up... but then I had to "go there" in explaining how I really really feel on the matter. :lmao:

sooo...did anyone get room assignments today? :confused3 :rotfl2:

Hey, I take that back! We must just be in the "d-list" or something because at 4:29am CST I just received the "info" email about the new ships... :lmao: Little do they know that I've already got the info on the Disboards.... they are too slow in sending the info! LOL

:surfweb:

GM pirate:

Presently 56 going up to 75 today...here in Sunny Central Florida.

Happy Friday and have a great day.

[J. R.] Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties because it's coooold out there today.
[Judy] It's coooold out there every day. What do you think this is, Castaway Cay?
[J. R.] There's another reason why today is especially exciting.
[Judy] Especially cold!
[J. R.] Yes, especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody's lips
[Judy] On their chapped lips
[J. R.] Right, on their chapped lips. Do you think anyone is going to talk about these topics today?
[Judy] That's right woodchuck-chuckers, it's...
[All] GROUNDHOG POST!

SO:

  • Did anyone get a room assignment from DCL today?
  • Lisa, did we tell you we really miss the website?
  • Cake. Yum, cake. With frosting. And whipped cream?
  • What size crocs should I buy? Are they comfortable? Boy, are they ugly.
  • blah, blah, blah N.R. (with swords)
  • Where are we going to be able to buy our lime green DIS T-****s for the cruise, Captain
  • The Tag Fairy doesn't like me. She likes me. I got tagged! It's like Christmas in February!
  • Did anyone get moved off WLE dining to Captain's dining?
  • Duct tape.
  • Who's going to win on that science-fiction show "AI"?
