OK... I'm caught up moving backwards to pg 4707 and posting 70,591 (Aug 8th) - more or less. I'm trying to cover roughly 200 postings per groundhog sitting.
The last time we were in Paris we were traveling with 2 other families - my BIL and my in-laws. We stayed back one morning cuz our kids were pretty slow moving and they went on ahead to explore while we would catch up at the museum we were targeting that day. Well... by the time we got out and were heading towards the museum at the Metro station ... we ran into my SIL sort of in a "girl on a mission" hurry BACK to our hotel. Just slightly behind her we saw her husband (my BIL in trail with his parents). It seems she had just been robbed in the metro! They were all at a busy metro station and 3 of them (BIL and his arents) were clustered at a metro map while my SIL was stand apart waiting. Thats when a bunch of young teens or pre-teens swarmed her and litterially engaged in a "soft" mugging. They made no attempt at being subtle but did not quite attack her. They distracted her roughly and some opened her shoulder purse and she knew they were trying to open it - she yelled as one kid pulled her wallet out of the shoulder purse! Then they all ran in different directions!
Yeah - she was mugged and robbed - and seriously annoyed. They got a little money and some credit cards. No passport though. Good thing - but it was pretty annoying to have happen in a foreign city.
On another note - my Dad was in customs entering Hong Kong on a business buying trip - and his trousers were cut with a razor blade and his wallet was stolen. IN CUSTOMS ... or betwen the walk from the aircraft and Customs!!! Again - money and credit cards but no passport was taken. My spouse and I are relatively vigilante and defensive of our personal space or if we sense we are being watched we watch out. We've so far never been robbed while traveling. Well... I can't recall having ever been robbed in the common sense of the idea.
Silly me - I thought the meet was at DL - and cannot make this meet. Even so - if it were this weekend we'd have trouble rescheduling other things around getting to DL. Safe travels to all enroute there and ... Enjoy the good cheer folks!
Ahem.... We actually have a few unopened moving boxes from the last time we moved. And that was in the last century...
Never heard of FiOS before....
That sounds pretty fast compared to my cable modem
I inally got "control" over my ground hog population by drowning them out. I tried bombing them but had no luck.
Wow!! That sounds like a real Wizard of Oz Toto and Dorothy thing! I reall running outside to chat with neighbors after the Whittier Quake of ... 1986?.. or 96? .... and we were in Monterey Park in front of the house with neighbors when a after-shock struck. You could hear it off inthe distance and when we looked that way - I recall thinking we could SEE a slight ripple eyeballeed as welooked the length of the street in that direction. THAT was very disconcerting to see. Or maybe I'm just sufferring from a mixed up memory, eh?
My spouse is from a one signal light town outside of Pittsburg, PA.. and she was born in Buffalo - however her Mom is Chinese from Hawaii and Dad Chineses from Thailand. So she had no prior experience with earthquakes when she experienced her first nominally big one with me. To put it mildly she was pretty ... shaken up. Oh... and I remember meeting her Mom 20+ years ago in PA ... and she used to call me a "City Slicker"...

I grew up in a family business which my parents ran for aout 25 years. When we had an employee on the register it had to count correctly on every shift. Invariably the errors were nice round numbers - $20 or $10.. etc. Anyone who could not maintain correct change was eventually let go. Most of the dollar volume was in checks and charge cards - rarely cash.
When I was in charge of a drawer my parents never counted my drawer - or at least they never let me KNOW it was counted. I was very careful. A couple times we were shop lifted by TEAMS of thieves. Eventually we had a good routine to control inventory and minimize the risk from shop lifters or the teams of thieves.
OK... time to hit the road for Visalia....
TTFN!
A couple of things came up in chat last night that I thought worth repeating on the main thread. Since Monica leaves on Monday we started discussing last minute tips. One was to either make copies of your passport, DL & credit cards and leave them in your room safe, or scan them & put them on a memory stick. Another was to make sure you're aware of pickpockets in foreign ports - make sure you don't carry your wallet in your back pocket. If you carry a camera or bag, it is a good idea to get a slash proof bag or strap. A couple of good sites (in case you don't already shop there):

Guess i haven't lived in a home for over 3 yrs then...
DH still nips at me that our pics are still in boxes...Heck i have about a 1/4of our basement/ground level that still has unpacked boxes.
Ahem.... We actually have a few unopened moving boxes from the last time we moved. And that was in the last century...
We've had cable high speed for a about four years and really like it but I am drooling over the new Fiber Optic Service (FiOS). It is supposed to be several times faster than cable internet service.![]()
Never heard of FiOS before....
Have had FiOS since Dec 05. Still waiting on NYC to approve the franchising for the FiOS TV.
We get 20Mbps download and 5 up. Its great. !!!! (and I'm not just saying that cause I'm a corporate drone)

Oh baby, if you want groundhogs, just come to my house....the buggers are a real bad about redecorating my lawn!

The worst one in Trenton was when I was 12, tried to run home as storm came in and didn't make it, a friend and I were about 100 feet away watching as the tornado lifted up a house, deposited it in the middle of the street then the funnel picked up and skipped to the next town. (no one killed, just a few broken bones)....

OK, last time a speak of EARTHQuakeson this thread. So at 1am last night a 4.5 hit about 12 miles from us. Got DW, DD12 and I out of bed. On the relative scale of things it was only a medium shaker but brings back memories of the big one in 1994. It was DD12 first experience with this size earthquake and she was freaked out.
No damage, it was too small but big enough to keep us awake for a long time last night.

Thanks Jack. I make no promises that it will arrive before you head South though. But have no fear it will appear![]()
First day back to work had me buried up past my eyes. Luckily everything went smoothly--my Mom was off too. Just a huge pile of mail and bills to go through. And paperwork was all done right except for 1 day. I spotted her mistake right away and had her fix it. Our daily work never balances to the penny or even close as long as it is within $20 bucks for the day, I am pleased with it. She had us $1400 short--simple gas error. I am hoping all these little trips I have been taking will pay off for next years really extended vacation.
