My thoughts are with you all that are struggling with the "parent-thing" these days. If only someone could invent a remote control that would allow us to "fast forward" through the tough times, and rewind to the good stuff, or slow down the frames when the stinkyteens aren't being stinky at all

We don't have school closing issues in our town ... we have "overcrowding" issues and need to build a new school. An architect has drawn up the plans, the land is available ... there just isn't any money in the budget to break ground. In the meantime, our High School stays on "warning" status with the state DH and I have started discussions about private schooling for our boys. I'm going to put him off for a year or so ... because the school I'd prefer starts classes the last week of August, and that just wouldn't work with my schedule for this year

Been busy around here. Yesterday my brother and his family flew down from Sacramento to celebrate my DFs 90th birthday. Took the kids out of school for the day so they could visit with their cousins.

Found out from my nephew that his family is going a short Mexican cruise and will be returning 8/15. They are planning to stay at our house that night or maybe the 16th. I mentioned that we are leaving for our vacation on the the 17th and that the 16th would probably not be a good night. So I guess that they are staying on the 15th. No sure how this will all play out for us coming to DL on the 16th. Maybe they will come too.

Lastly DW went to the School Board Meeting last night for the final vote on closing Austyn's elementary school. The board voted 3-2 to close our school. I have made a note of the 3 old ladies that voted to close our school and will make sure they are not elected the next time they are up for election. The biggest grip that we have is that the school they are moving us too are among the lowest in the district. Only 57 kids out of 500 can speak English and their API scores are really on the low side. We moved here 20 some odd years ago because of our neighborhood school. Our school is a National Blue ribbon school and last week won its 3rd Distinguished School award. Moving to the designated school is just not an option for Austyn. We will now have to start exploring our options as to where she will be going to school and when to move her.

We both have 90 yo parents. How cool is that!!!!!

It bites about her school. Hope you get her situated in a better school. It is tough fighting the schools at best. We were looking into putting DS into a private school when we had so much trouble with his principal and the miserable policies in his school. At the time we could've afforded the 2nd thru 4th grades. But they had a sliding scale which rose the higher the grade. So it was an losing battle and we left him where he was. They did hate to see me coming in Kept telling me they do it different than "up north".

No Coral I only had funny squamous cells that did not turn into Cancer but very easily could. My original mole was the size of the top of a straight pin but very dark. Doctor thought he got it all the first time but one margin was just not clear enough. Now hopefuly the margins are clear. He gets only a second shot since it was so small but next time I go for the Moths Surgery.

My birthday is May 10....I was born on Mother's Day way back when. Last year Laura and I met up in Orlando and sent the Magic on her way to the Med. Looks like this year we will do the same but I will be waving at Laura from shore as she takes the Magic to the west coast.

I forgot she was going. We will be with you waving as well.

Thanks for DFs birthday wishes! Our school district is projecting declining elementary enrollment over the next few years. This is debatable and have seen sources that it might actually be increasing over the same time frame. The school district has targeted our school because it is the smallest (in kids) in the district. They feel that closing the smallest school will cause the least disruption. But to take a top school and scatter us into 3 of the bottom schools really sinks as far as us parents are concerned. We have had in the past, an option of school choice. You can apply for your child to attend another school in the district other than the one your are assigned to. Funny thing happened yesterday morning, they rescinded the school choice option from our school district prior to the board meeting last night. Now only the kids from the two closing schools can school choice (sounds good so far) BUT you can only school choice to the school you are slated to move to in 2009. So basically they are allowing us to move to a school that we are assigned to a year earlier. Anyway, tonight we are having a grass roots meeting to form a charter school. We already have people working on this, so today I am reading about charter schools. Thanks again for all of your words of encouragement.

Best of luck. They have lots of Charter schools here in Orlando. Some have been very successful. Hope it works out.I hate when they project info that may not be correct.

Here's my dumb question for day, I saw something similar on another thread, but figured since I won't ever go back to that one, I would ask it here....

If you rebook on board, can you transfer the ressie to another ship? Probably more specifically, is it possible now to transfer a Wonder ressie to the Magic? What about a Magic to Wonder?

Yes, thinking ahead to new ships and just wondering how DCL handles it now...

BTW, one of the Meyer Werft webcams is showing an empty bay... wonder if the Dreams or whatever the other one will be called will be there next?

It was noted on one of the pod casts I was listening to last month, they will not be showing the ship under construction If someone has any different info????

Welcome aboard as well. Even though we booked our rooms on January 31, 2007, I have only recently starting reading and joining in on the conversation of this thread. For me, it was easier just to watch the last bit of Thread #3 instead of attempting to go back and read all 200 plus pages. Once Thread #4 started, I knew I could stay caught up. There's still some things that go on here that confuse me -- mainly the pirate smilely. But it doesn't take that long and it's a lot more friendly than the main board!

Tom, we already have a legal team that specializes in Charter schools draw up the preliminary charter. We are kind of doing this on the sly at the moment since CVSD does not have any rules on charter schools. We do not want them to get wind of this and start making up restrictions/rules before we present in June. According to the legal team we should be good from a state and county level. I will let you know info as it becomes available.

We are dealing with the opposite deal here. We voted to build a 3rd high school two years ago and the SB had picked a location in Naperville. They filed a condemnation suit to get the land and the jury came back with a very large price tag. So now they decided to change sites to a site in Aurora, IL and a group of Naperville residents are suing the school district because their kids have to go to Aurora now. Aurora does not have the best reputation (or at least not as good as Naperville) but there's nothing wrong with the HS that is in Aurora now. (My son swims for their swim team rather than for 'his' school in Naperville b/c the Naperville swim team is ultra-competitive and my son is more of a recreational kind of athlete. Of course, DS's team won the city water polo championship last summer).

You should see some of the stuff this group that is suing is putting out about the school board, all sorts of hysteria over hazardous chemicals on the new site, its proximity to power lines and railroads and natural gas pipelines under the property.

It's getting pretty toxic around here, and I don't mean the school property.

The Orange Cty SB built an elementary school over a former munitions base
Yes, former munitions firing range. They have dug up so many bombs in the last year it is frightening. Of course they said they are all duds but the news shows like to play the bombs detonating when they blow them up. So much for Duds. Kids can't use the yards anymore.

I would rather a 6pm dining time. It will be hard enough to get to dinner when we are in port with the 6pm time. Lumieres would be nice but we could live without. Bottom line, this is not a live or die issue which ever way is decided.

I agree with Roger , 6pm regardless of the rotation , the only thing that is for sure right now is the 6pm dining time wether it would be staggered dining or single time dining ....Rotation and what nights are when are still up in the air ...Captains dining will remain at 6pm regardless of rotation or theme night ...That is all ..everyone back to scrubbing decks ...LOL

We have allmost an inch of new snow right now!!!! !!! I thought tomorrow was supposed to be the 1st day of spring.

Now they are saying 3-5 inches here tomorrow. DD and I are going to Sandusky to Great Wolf Lodge so, we may be driving in snow, but I sure won't be shoveling this weekend!

My mom was from Painesville, so I know you guys get lake effect too.

Thanks to you and everyone else who has expressed their concern regarding both the schools and issues with the kids. We moved from an awesome school district in the Johnson County suburbs of Kansas City to what we thought was an excellent school district in Colorado. However, we found out that here in Colorado, it really depends on the individual school and not the overall district. There is no consistency. After our recent ordeal with having to change schools mid-year for our middle DS, we have applied to the district to be "choiced" into an elementary school next year that's outside our normal boundary. We find out in early April if we get our choice (fingers crossed).

School admin has a huge impact on the individual school. Fortunately for us, our youngest DS attended another elementary school this past year as it was the only one that offered all day kindergarten. Although we didn't always agree with all of that principal's decisions (we're very involved in our kids schools), we find that overall she really impresses upon her staff to do what's best for the kids and their education. We like her no nonsense approach and hope our youngest two get into that particular school next year vs the care-free whatever goes principal in our boundary school.
