So, a few threads on the main cruise board have me thinking about something I'm sort of afraid to ask...but I'll go ahead and do it since we all seem to be able to respect one another's opinions and I'm pretty sure we can have a conversation without anyone being called a good or bad parent & if the discussion takes a turn, we can leave it here on this thread that is about to be shut down anyway...here goes...

We have about a million pirate kids between 8 & 12, so I ask parents - what are your thoughts on sign out privileges for your tweens?

This is the first time the monkeys have been close to an age that we can even think about it.

I have a plan of being consertative at least for the 1st few days and they re-evaluate. My 12 YO is not the most mature but the 8 YO is. It would kill the 12 yo if I let the 8 yo check herself out and not her.
My 12 yo also does not see prefectly. She is not correctable to 20/20 so after a few days getting the lay of the ship she should be ok.
I am going to play it by ear. All of the other cruises we have been on they have had 20-35 other family members on board to watch out for them, but they are a little older too. :confused3

Just wanted to stop in to say hello again and try and catch up! With wedding planning it is impossible to keep up with this thread!

M....I am all for it IF you think your kids can handle the responsibility and you think they will be safe. I was sure I would NOT let my son have sign out privileges on our last cruise (which was our first). He was 11 at the time. When we got on board, I realized he would be fine, and I allowed it. He'll be 13 on this cruise, so it's a non-issue for him. Now, Kylie will be 8 on this cruise, and I am NOT going to allow her to have sign out privileges, because I worry more about her safety roaming around the ship by herself, or even with a friend or 2 her age. She is very mature for her age in my opinion, but I would worry too much. I am probably guilty of a double standard, but it may have a lot to do with her being a girl.

Luckily, my parents will be sailing with us, so between the 4 of us, it won't be a big hassle to get her in and out of the lab.

Hello!

I was asking some questions on the main disney cruise board thread and they refrered me to this thread.

I was just wondering if you all wouldn't mind helping me out with some questions my party and I have as time goes on?? It would be a huge help!

You all seem like a nice friendly bunch and I certainly wouldn't want to intreupt any of your discussion!

A little background about myself:

I'll be 28 this 2/29, yes a leap year baby. My wife and I will be on this cruise along with her entire immeadiate family and some of their friends as well. I may be new to these boards, but not to many others on the net. I regret not coming to this site earlier.

We are Disney nuts! I've been a DVC member since my junior year of college when I jumped in with pretty much my life savings! (just to give you an idea of how much we love all things mouse.)

We love to cruise, however, this is the first time we will be on a Disney ship. Which is basically why I'm seeking help from any past cruisers or those who have already made their plans.

Sorry for the interuption, and I thank you so much for any help.

Thanks!

I think we will be looking at it in a similar fashion.... Of course if I get one more call from the principal about my DS10 fighting...... may only be 3 of us on trip.....

although, letting DS8 sign out and not DS10.... hmmmm torture....

Sounds good..... I think it is similar to what M&Ms mom is saying, see where it goes....

Welcome! We would all love to help you out with any questions you have!

Thanks again for the responses!

I've been having a little trouble finding what I thought would be simple information regarding formal nights (how many/which nights) and just a generel idea of the activities on the ship. Do they do a nightly newletter type thing they do on other cruislines?

I know this is a reposition cruise, but I also know its been done before. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

Any idea? Have any of you been on these repositioning cruises before?

I think it's the kind of thing that a parent has to decide for him- or herself . . . you know your children better than anyone else. My youngest will be 11 on this cruise and will be given privileges as long as she always appears where I expect her when I expect her . . . she was allowed this last year when she had just turned 10, but not the previous year when she was 9. However, last year my middle daughter was 12 and did a lot of the same activities so I had her checking up on the youngest -- sort of a transition year. I like giving the kids the maximum freedom I believe they can handle, and a Disney ship is a good place to start. That being said, as I'm sure you've noticed, opinions on this matter vary WIDELY . . .

You don't have to keep up -- just keep an eye on the planning areas . . .:thumbsup2

Welcome aboard! Look at the first post in this thread. There is a lot of good information there. Also contact tom31 for access to thepiratezone.

Yes, you will receive a "Navigator" each day. It lists all the activities and more. There are Navigators from the 2005 Repositioning Cruise on the pirate zone to give you some idea. This is my first repositioning cruise, but others on here have done them before.

This is a great group of people and they are happy to help others out and answer questions. This is my 3rd Disney cruise, but the first since I found this site and all the wonderful information.:yay:

Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't have the exact schedule of all the theme nights, but hope to by April or May. You can find old navigators from when DCL went through the PC in 2005 here:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/Photos/DCL-Navigators/8-20-05/index.htm

Lots of our planning information can be found or linked to other sites here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1715250

Several people, including Andrew who posted the Navigators, were on the previous PC repo cruise, and several more of us, myself included, were on the Med repo cruise last August (which was really a very different cruise in many ways from the PC repo one).

And any other questions that come up, please ask them! Welcome aboard!

If you wait a while, Andrew from the UK will be on and he did the 2005 PC Repo. A few others on here did last year's trans-Atlantic repo.

On our website, there are a bunch of links to 2005 repo info, including links to prior Navigators (the daily newsletter of activities), etc.

You may also want to check our Virtual Cruise which goes day by day, with pictures, some humor and the Navigators for each day of the cruise or the Itinerary/Ports section, which has some info about the ports, possible non-DCL excursions (if that appeals to you) and other good info.

This is the first time the monkeys have been close to an age that we can even think about it.

We began giving DD13, sign out privileges at 10 years old. Our rule when we first started is that if she left the kids area she could only go back to the room. If she didn't follow the rules then the privilege would be taken away. She did very well and followed the rules

The other thing that we did is to make sure we had a copy of the navigators to find out where they would be at any certain time, if it included an activity outside of the lab.

When she was 12 she had a little more freedom but had to check in with us every couple of hours if she was walking around the ship with friends. We would let her know if we were going to be at an activity, or by the pool. If we weren't at any of these places then she had to go back to the room if she couldn't find us.

On our RCCL cruise last year we used our cell phones if we had a problem finding each other. The other rule was that she would have to call the room and leave a message if she was going to be somewhere other then what we had discussed earlier in the day. We didn't use the cell phones often so it wasn't expensive but it was great to have for my piece of mind

The biggest rule was that no one was allowed in our cabin if we weren't there and she wasn't allowed into anyone else's cabin. One day we were heading back to the room and found two of the girls she had become friends with sitting in the hallway outside our door waiting for her. She had no idea we were coming back to the room as she had just gone in to get something she had forgotten. We were happy to see that she was following our instructions

Our other biggest rule was that if the ship was docked, if we weren't getting off, she had to be with us if she wasn't in the kids clubs or attending an activity they were having. No roaming the ship while it is docked. This really wasn't a problem because most of her friends were out with their families on shore excursions

The last rule we had is that they had to eat all meals with us unless there was a special evening going on with the lab. DD had to check in with us at lunch even if we weren't actually eating

We also had a curfew for them. The only time they were allowed to stay out past it is if there was a scheduled activity that they wanted to attend. On RCCL cruise they had a pool party at 11pm for the 12-14 year olds. DD was allowed to go but you can bet either DH or I went up there a couple of times to make sure all was ok. She didn't see us but it eased my mind to check

DS11 will get his first taste of sign out privileges on our EB cruise in August
DD13 will be 14 right after the cruise ends

We haven't layed down the rules yet for this upcoming cruise but it will be very similar to the above.
As others have said you know your kids best. The above worked for our family

I won't be letting Lauren have sign out priviliges & she too will be 8 (altho' would probably argue she is almost 9!). To be honest, I hadn't even considered it as an option, even tho' I'm sure she'll be in a group with others of a similar age (maybe that's what scares me more) & is quite confident. Maybe we'll reevaluate, but I think it unlikely.

Celestine

This is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks so much!

No problem -- ask any time. It's good to give us something productive to do every now and then! And happy birthday in advance . . . :yay:

You know, there is such a huge group of kids in this age group....it seems like they will have friends everywhere they go! I think it's going to make the cruise so much more fun for them!

But I thought 50,000,000,000 posts a day was productive? :confused3 :confused3 :lmao: :lmao:

I saw that thread too. So it has me thinking. DD will be 10 and she has been coming home after school and stays alone for 1 1/2 hours till I get home. She has also been walking to choir practice. She has really matured this year. I know I need to give her a bit more freedom. So I think we might play it by ear, with guidelines. Don't want her just hanging out somewhere, but she really likes the Lab so, she might just want to be there all the time!
