I saw that thread too. So it has me thinking. DD will be 10 and she has been coming home after school and stays alone for 1 1/2 hours till I get home. She has also been walking to choir practice. She has really matured this year. I know I need to give her a bit more freedom. So I think we might play it by ear, with guidelines. Don't want her just hanging out somewhere, but she really likes the Lab so, she might just want to be there all the time!

Maybe we should develop a "contract" for the kids who will be given limited privileges so that a bunch of kids will be under the same rules??

But I thought 50,000,000,000 posts a day was productive? :confused3 :confused3 :lmao: :lmao:

Tom, our idea of "productive" and the concept held by most others outside this thread simply do not seem to be compatible . . . has to do with what we actually "produce," I suspect!:rotfl2:

Tina, I think you are going to find that she wants to spend a lot of time in Quest, as well . . . my youngest was 10 last summer and I ended up giving her the freedom to check herself out and it worked well.

That sounds like a brilliant idea to me . . .

Hello!

I was asking some questions on the main disney cruise board thread and they refrered me to this thread.

I was just wondering if you all wouldn't mind helping me out with some questions my party and I have as time goes on?? It would be a huge help!

You all seem like a nice friendly bunch and I certainly wouldn't want to intreupt any of your discussion! Thanks!

:cheer2: WELCOME ABOARD:cheer2:

Interrupt away. :goodvibes There are lots of people popping in and out. What questions do you have? We're always willing to share previous experiences. For some of us - it's the only way we survive between cruises.:rotfl2:

If you are looking for suggestions......we also have the "no one in our cabin, and you aren't allowed in anyone's cabin" rule. Also, "you must report in when changing locations. Either leave message on stateroom phone or note inside cabin door."

:thumbsup2 Good idea, Tom...but only if it ends with:

"I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein contained," et cetera, et cetera...”Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum," et cetera, et cetera...”Memo bis punitor delicatum!"

To tell you the truth I really hadn't even thought about the sign out thing until I saw the threads last week. We are the meanest parents ever, so my guys are pretty well behaved. I think I'm inclined to give it a try with lots of rules in place, like limiting the places they can go (our room, deck 9 goofy pool area, plutos & pinocchios, game room), no going into anyone elses room, no one else in our room, specific family check in times, and stipulating that they must be together. I know they will have DIS friends by the time we board & I'm suspecting that some of us will participate in 'group parenting' at one point or another during the 15 days. (feel free to yell at my kids, they're used to it!)

... and of course the first time I (or another pirate) see them somehwere that they aren't supposed to be or doing something they aren't supposed to be doing, all bets are off..

ETA: Oh and after dinner, I think the rule will be - the lab, the room, or with us. Not sure I want them roaming the ship at night.

How does it work with CC? Are they still in sign out mode at the kids area there or is it separate from the ship authorization?

I doubt my kids will go in there (only if they request to), but I would be more worried about them wandering there than the ship....

Yes, definitely.

How does it work with CC? I would be more worried about them wandering there than the ship....

Good point, Tom. I'm pretty sure our kids will both be with us all day at CC, but just in case my son surprises me, and decides to go off with friends....this is also something I need to consider, and hadn't.

One of our events on Sunday was DS9's hockey game in Fredneck. Kristina stopped by the rink for a bit - it was great to see you K & awesome for you to come out to an oh-so-exciting kids hockey game! After the game, as DS was taking his gear off, I called him out of the locker room to introduce him to Kristina. He held out his hand to shake hers & said "Nice to meet you". I was so proud...he was so polite...except for the fact that he accomplished all this with his mouthguard still in his mouth! Kids.

I hope everyone is doing well.

That was great that you and K got to meet. And I agree very sweet of your son. :goodvibes

So, a few threads on the main cruise board have me thinking about something I'm sort of afraid to ask...but I'll go ahead and do it since we all seem to be able to respect one another's opinions and I'm pretty sure we can have a conversation without anyone being called a good or bad parent & if the discussion takes a turn, we can leave it here on this thread that is about to be shut down anyway...here goes...

We have about a million pirate kids between 8 & 12, so I ask parents - what are your thoughts on sign out privileges for your tweens?

This is the first time the monkeys have been close to an age that we can even think about it.

I haven't read anyone else's responses yet, but here are my thoughts ... You know your kiddos and what responsibility they can handle. My oldest will be 12 on TOAL, this will be his 5th Disney cruise. On our last 2 cruises we've experimented with s/o privileges. Once we even let him and our travelling companions oldest son sign themselves out and attend dinner w/o us (dining rotation was smack in the middle of Palo ressies, and the kids really liked getting to order off the adult menu in the dining room ... our serving team actually suggested it when we told them about the Palo ressie) They handled it very well. We also used it to pop into the lab and tell oldest DS to sign himself out while we go to the club and gather the younger one, and then meet us back in the stateroom. He's a pretty responsible and respectful kid, so I'm fairly confident that he'll have s/o privileges throughout the TOAL. There will be rules (one big one for me is NO SWIMMING w/o a parent) and at first nudge of those rules, he'll be "back on the beeper"

NOW ... my youngest is another story. He'll be 9 on TOAL. He's never had s/o, and I don't know that he's mature enough to handle it :confused3 Plus, he usually has such a ball in the Lab that I have a hard time pulling him out even when they close. We might need to baby-step experiment with him a bit this time ... maybe not w/ sign-out ... but maybe a solo trip to get an ice cream cone while we're hanging at the goofy pool.

One rule that I saw on the main cruise board that I hadn't thought about but WILL be including on this cruise is the No Elevator rule. I try to stay out of the elevators on the ship (but that's my own attempt to counter-act some of those drinks of the day ;) ) But on the occassion that I have been in them ... it's pretty annoying that someone has hit every button and I'm stopping on every floor. If my kiddo's aren't allowed in the elevator, then I don't have to be nervous that it was them annoying some other innocent passenger :thumbsup2

A little background about myself:

I'll be 28 this 2/29, yes a leap year baby. My wife and I will be on this cruise along with her entire immeadiate family and some of their friends as well. I may be new to these boards, but not to many others on the net. I regret not coming to this site earlier.

We are Disney nuts! I've been a DVC member since my junior year of college when I jumped in with pretty much my life savings! (just to give you an idea of how much we love all things mouse.)

We love to cruise, however, this is the first time we will be on a Disney ship. Which is basically why I'm seeking help from any past cruisers or those who have already made their plans.

Sorry for the interuption, and I thank you so much for any help.

Thanks!

Everyone is always welcome to join our merry band of pirates!!!! Ask away with questions. :thumbsup2

I have great admiration for you. I have real issues with 8 legs. My GP referred me for help & the psychologist just made me worse! I understand how the therapy was suppposed to work, i.e. confront your fears by repeatedly watching arachnophobia, but all it made me do was continually check my slippers & cereal boxes! Now with the girls I have to be more brave & managed to throw a casserole dish over the one in the eldest's slipper. Unfortunately DH was away for 2 weeks so I had to ring MIL to dispose of it after a couple of days as I didn't know what else to do - it was still alive as I don't want them dead. just not near me

Celestine

I agree that Stace is the WOMAN! I don't like the spiders and centipedes give me the creeps.:worship:
Can't wait for March 4th. I am ready for our Primary Elections to be overwith! I think Hillary is stalking us. We have gotten like 8 phone calls from her in the past couple of weeks. I think she keeps calling back because we are hanging up on her. When will she take the hint? Hill, we are just not that into you.

I know -- I kept getting those "robo-calls" before our primary . . . I finally stayed on the line and listened to one all the way through and I still got more, so I don't think it affects anything one way or the other!

I can't stand the political calls. Thankfully, we don't get too many. Our primaries are later and most everything has been decided by the time ours roll around.:headache:
You mark things off? I never seem to be able to do that.

Maybe I should add "Post to the DIS" to my list.
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

M, M2c, I think thats a decision for each family to make. Everyone knows how responsible or irresponsible their kids are. I have read where parents have rules about not letting other children into the staterooms--which to me sounds like a great idea. Especially for a ST my son's age. I think I would only stress to them that it is a privelge (?) and that if it was abused and they got into mischief they would have to go back to being signed out. (Also, may be a point to mention is that there are at least 500 people on board that know who you belong to:lmao: ) But I think that our kids like to know that we trust them:)

So I have been dragging (with the promise of food and cake samples) Brendan to all these wedding expos. So we have met some good photogs and djs. But the main reason I like to go is the swag....free stuff! So I gather all the free stuff (some were fresh orchids!) and enter all the contests....we have won dance lessons and now..just got the call....$300 towards laser hair removal!!!!

Can't wait to tell him!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao:

Chrissie

Congrats Chrissie! Geez I won't recongnize you when I see you! Glowing in jewels, graceful as a butterfly from dance lessons & hairless? :lmao:

She's cute! May have to find me one of those to add to the other Barbies in the closet.:)

My DD has a collection in her closet. I'm a mean mother & made her save some beautiful ones her late Grandmother gave her. Lately she's only been getting the holiday edition, but she has her eye on one of the designer ones.

Hi everyone!

Just a quick stop by - I've been MIA here for over a week. Life just got hectic again and we all keep getting this cold. We are probably passing it around. It isn't really being "Sick" - just stuffy nose, a little achy and tired. It goes away after a few days and you think you are over it and then comes back for a repeat!

I've been using my little bit of free time on the PC in the evening for a couple other projects rather than DISing. Someone from the DISigns forum asked me to do a group of designs for her. I used to do a lot of these, but since this thread started I really don't hang out over there anymore. Mostly I do variations on the same general idea - person's name with characters all around it. The original idea started with someone else, but when she was overwhelmed with requests a few others stepped in to help out. I sort of have my own "style" for these and every so often someone finds me and asks for some. I enjoy doing them, but they eat up time. (If anyone is curious, you can see them at http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a301/pdarrah/T-Shirt Designs/ )

Pamela

Hope you all feel better & those are really neat! :thumbsup2

This is what we're really praying for. He's sick of working contracts, with the promise of being hired full time, just to have them cut his contracts short, with no back up job in place! The Omaha job would be a blessing, no contract, close to family, lower cost of living, and I'm sure Mom would like having another option of where to stay when she comes to visit! He's still keeping his eyes open her in Columbus though, just in case.

Best of luck! :wizard:

Peculiar vanity plate sighting.......MOO FREE

What do you think....Vegan, lactose intolerant or pro-pleather?

Deanna you woke up in a comical mood this morning huh? :rotfl:

Tom, I actually think it's a great idea too! If you decide to write one up, could you put a copy on the web site?

If you are looking for suggestions......we also have the "no one in our cabin, and you aren't allowed in anyone's cabin" rule. Also, "you must report in when changing locations. Either leave message on stateroom phone or note inside cabin door."

I like the message idea. I'll have to remember that! :thumbsup2

ETA: Oh and after dinner, I think the rule will be - the lab, the room, or with us. Not sure I want them roaming the ship at night.

I think we might be meaner! We did give each of them sign out priviledges in 2006 so DS was 9 & DD was just 12, but it always ended up that we got them anyway. :confused3 We did start giving them a bit of freedom like we have in WDW. As long as they stayed together we would let them go run & get a quick snack or a gift, but other than that they really weren't allowed to roam.

I think all your ideas are good ones M & you're right there are going to be so many kids & parents that we are familiar with. I will allow my now DD14 & DS11 more freedom to go to the Lab, Quest, or arcade with friends and the Stack for DD if that is where her friends are going. They will be allowed to head back to the room IF they are together. Even though DD is 14 I do not feel comfortable allowing her or my DS to be anywhere by themselves & especially walking by staterooms. :scared:

How does it work with CC? Are they still in sign out mode at the kids area there or is it separate from the ship authorization?

I doubt my kids will go in there (only if they request to), but I would be more worried about them wandering there than the ship....

My kids won't leave us at CC! Someday I'll get to see that adult beach!

Hmmmmm maybe if they end up with a bunch of kids playing volleyball or something?

I haven't read anyone else's responses yet, but here are my thoughts ... You know your kiddos and what responsibility they can handle. My oldest will be 12 on TOAL, this will be his 5th Disney cruise. On our last 2 cruises we've experimented with s/o privileges. That is one of our MAJOR rules & no hanging on the stairs either! :sad2: In fact no "hanging" anywhere unless they are in the arcade, lab, Quest, or Stack.

I love it M! I forgot about the Sports Deck, DS would probably like to play basketball & they both like to play Ping Pong so the pool area is okay, but I don't think I want them swimming without us. They are pretty good, but I've seen kids get jumped on in the Goofy pool & it is stuff like that, that has me worried. The no snack after 4 is a great one too! :thumbsup2

Nothing says, "I love You" like a binding legal document!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.:rolleyes1
I do think it's a good idea. At dd's school they have a PCF form. Parent Contact Form is used when the kids majorly misbehave and is also with a Life Skills Plan, where they explain in writting what they did and which life skill they should of used. Hey, the threat of paperwork would make me stay in line!:lmao:

Tina, I think you are going to find that she wants to spend a lot of time in Quest, as well . . . my youngest was 10 last summer and I ended up giving her the freedom to check herself out and it worked well.

She has been talking about the Lab and her crush Brad (one of the counslers)
She did get the chance to go Quest and thought it was neat!

You always have your lawyer hat on, don't you?

I did see kids checking themselves out of the clubs on CC, so I think the sign out is the same as on the ship. That's another thing, wouldn't want dd roaming CC! Although, last cruise, she did spend more time with me in the morning and than went to the Lab in the afternoon.
