I remember someone suggesting that recently, Todd -- I believe they suggested another forum for past cruises. Again, a good idea provided we are sure that the people in charge of the Dis servers understand all the causes of what makes the Disboards slow at times. It might require several different actions. Also, this is a function in part of the success of the boards -- which leads to your previous point about potentially needing more/better/faster servers.

There's an obvious solution... a larger server farm would relieve any performance issues. However, who is going to pay for it - as well as the upkeep?

I often use multi-quotes to S-P-R-E-A-D the thread less ... however on the other hand I am guilty of originating a number of image postings... as well as serving as the catalyst for others doing the same.
As for what role the host serves - well, it does pass the commands and addresses ... and it's only handling the load of ONE page... and not the burden of 80,000 pages being processed.

So... I've seen some folks say they hear of the speed being better, and I see others posting it is no different. I have NOT been online much since mid December so I can't really say I've noticed much one way or the other.

Hey crash, you are innocent! and thanks for starting it back up again, re the processing from post 1, thats what the Webmaster posted a few weeks back and quoted here, I am not an expert, but then they said the problem was long threads.

This morning, (UK) they were still slow, but since this afternoon they are faster than I have ever seen before, EDIT mode is also very fast and doesn't stick.

I think you have added spice to the threads, and a lot of fun, I enjoy your contribution, maybe the images are a piece if the jigsaw, not sure?

Good point, they ask for donations, to help support.

Well, obviously the Disboards get ad revenue -- and the prices paid for those ads should reflect the number of people seeing them and a targeted audience -- so in theory as increased volume requires better servers, increased ad revenue based on total viewers should offset it.

As an alternative, YOU could just pay for better servers and the upkeep, Crash!:goodvibes

I read and posted some of the previous Mod /Webmaster reports, it seems when you access a thread, the server looks from post 1, each time, to the last page of posts, and then brings that up, he longer the thread, the more work the server has to go through.

Now think of that with a popular thread where many are accessing it all at the same time and the issue is compounded.

Agreed.

Like during a pirate: run???

With that assumption it would prove my theory that they really need more or better servers ...

Really? I hadn't noticed.:lmao: :lmao:

Exactly -- it's amazing how well you can get to know people this way, isn't it, Tracy? I was a long time lurker on the boards -- just took information from others until I started to feel badly that I had information sometimes for people but didn't "give back." I had some contact with cruise meets but nothing too intense after starting to post here. And at first I found this thread a little intense, too -- until I started to realize that I didn't have to keep up, could just jump in and enjoy whenever I had the time.

Now I can't imagine what this upcoming cruise would have been like had I not gotten to know so many people ahead of time. I know that the friendships I made on the meet thread for the July 28 Med cruise last summer made the trip that much better.

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I totally agree with you. The DISers on our last cruise made the trip fantastic!

Part, plus its a good introduction to DREAMS as well, but not sure what revenue streams this generates to cover the costs of servers and bandwidth?

Think so, ....have you noticed what happens to the boards when a Run is on, thoose last few posts?

I forget exactly when I became a Dis sponsor, but I was having so much fun getting to know everyone here and became way more active than I was in 05 when I joined that it made me feel good. Now I am not saying that it is something everyone needs to do, but it was important to me.:)

Hope everyone is having a great day:)

Well done, and thanks, I presumed all the cruises I book through Dreams as well as WDW and DL-C, might help?

Morning all. I thought I would just check to make sure our thread was really "hidden" for 24 hours. And what do I find? (OK I tried to post a picture, but I still can't figure out how to post from the internet. How do I post the picture and not just the link?)

I thought I going to have to go through a 24 hour withdrawal, but I find Crash has gotten me a fix. DH asked last night what I was going to do when this cruise was over and I didn't have anything to read. I told him this thread will never die...or I will have to book another cruise (one that has a nice friendly thread).:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'm pretty sure we'll continue to chat.

Hiding our thread couldn't even stop us. pirate:

/QUOTE]

I'm sure Dreams is able to tax deduct the cost of the boards as advertising costs . . . I'm not saying that it's not expensive, but that there are ways to pay for it. If I had a Disney-related or travel-related business, I would certainly advertise here.

And Paula, of course the more angels :cloud9: there are like you, the better . . .

If they could guarantee that the boards would run better if every person who had posted in the past month donated $1 -- or $5 -- and if even a third of the people did it, there would be a huge influx of revenue.

Of course it all depends first of all on knowing for sure what the issue is and how to fix it -- then you can generate the revenue needed for the fix, if that is what is needed.

Good points.

So, a question I keep asking:

Is "we temporarily removed all threads with over 10,000 posts" some kind of 1984-speak for "we got rid of the Captain Jack's 2008 EB repo thread?" Were there any other threads taken away? Could we truly be the sole cause of slow running on the Disboards???? :goodvibes I've seen a lot of posts elsewhere saying how much faster things are running, and a few comments about how long threads are nothing more than "slow chat" . . .

Several of the clique threads on the Community Board were removed too.

Agreed.

Interesting...

... maybe we could have threads broken out by cabin catagory or alphabet to maintain smaller threads.

Oh well... I imagine this is not the entire issue - as I suspect it involves many factors as opposed to any one or two considerations.

I have a hilarious story about the Seaquarium. We were there with two other DISer families. I love to snorkel but I get a little uncomfortable when too many people are around me (afraid I'll not be able to come up for air). We were all over by the sea turtles and feeding them through the Plexiglas. It was getting crowded so I went over to the shark side. Also I should say I talk to the fish through my snorkel :rotfl: I was talking to a great white saying "here Jaws, here Jaws" and holding out the fish to the hole in the Plexiglas and he was coming to take it when one of my friends swam up behind me and I kicked her with my fins. I never screamed so loud underwater! :lmao:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

What's also cool about this story is that I know (and can picture) exactly where you were!
