Hi Everyone!

Nice to "see" you all here!

I would think that even if they have to limit the length of threads, that they would lock the long thread so it could still be read, but not posted to. If the do that, then we'll just continue here! Would our thread post count then be the SUM of the two threads?

We are still waiting to hear from CNN on when exactly DH's clip will be run. They told him yesterday that they were planning to finish production around lunch time (yesterday) and it could start running Friday. Of course, the show "Your $$$$$" doesn't seem to run on Friday so we have NO idea when it will be on!

I agree Stace, the problem is probably the amount of images and the SIZE of some of them. If I remember correctly, when the signature size was limited a few months back they said then it was to limit the number of images that are in a persons signature to help speed up the boards.

I agree with both, looks like the boards have been slowed down by long threads, and we have to act responsibly, you both have put it very well.

I have had to pull out of the 2009 cruise thread as its way over 5,000 posts in little over a month, and two Dissers have made nearly 50% of the posts.

I just couldn't catch up, last week eight pages in a few hours?

No dampener we all can enjoy, but yes use Multi quotes to catch up, do not quote ''pictures'' I have tried myself and missed a few!

DH and I spent 10 days in Curacao several years ago, and we practically took up residence at the Seaquarium.....it was THE best place to snorkel.
After the first two days, they gave us employee passes so we could get in for free.

I was really wishing we were going to Curacao for this cruise....because I knew EXACTLY where I'd be going!!

I have a hilarious story about the Seaquarium. We were there with two other DISer families. I love to snorkel but I get a little uncomfortable when too many people are around me (afraid I'll not be able to come up for air). We were all over by the sea turtles and feeding them through the Plexiglas. It was getting crowded so I went over to the shark side. Also I should say I talk to the fish through my snorkel I was talking to a great white saying "here Jaws, here Jaws" and holding out the fish to the hole in the Plexiglas and he was coming to take it when one of my friends swam up behind me and I kicked her with my fins. I never screamed so loud underwater!

That sounds like here. lbgraves (Linda, right?) has not posted on this thread in 8 months and last I saw was still hugely in the lead on # of posts. Not sure if it is still that way.

Yep , Its not the big threads that are slowing down the board ....

So, a question I keep asking:

Is "we temporarily removed all threads with over 10,000 posts" some kind of 1984-speak for "we got rid of the Captain Jack's 2008 EB repo thread?" Were there any other threads taken away?

The geeks DCL thread is gone too .

I REALLY don't want to be a downer, or to hurt anyone's feelings....please understand that......BUT.......
and I am going to bold this type, so I am NOT yelling, I just want everyone to see it......

One of the biggest problems with the thread(s) that are larger, like this one....is not the amount of posts....

But the amount of IMAGES.

We had lots of photos on geeks thread too. It wasn't always slow and we had way over 10,000 for sometime since maybe May'ish 2006.

But if they want to blame images.. It wasn't just our thread then. i blame crappy servers and all the members/hits we have on the site.

That is exactly correct, but if removing them has speeded up the boards, what will happen if they return?

Maybe it sped up for a little while too because everyone thought it was still down (ie note my theory above.)

Maybe it will run on the web first? Don't know , but did see listings for videos when I was trying to find the program yesterday. My listing has it titled something other than Your $$$$ but seems to have the same times. I have it dvr'd so hopefully I can catch it.You must be so excited. The local station here used to put DD and her coach on all the time due to the fact an iceskater in Orlando was a rare thing at that time,and one competing as well. Still have those on tape and hopefully will be able to convert to digital. Keep us updated.

She Lisa is still around as a mod and on part one of this thread I think she still had the highest post count.

Its a pity I have had to drop out, of the Eastern 2009 thread, no one likes a very slow thread, with few posts, but at the same time, we do not spend all our lives here we have other things to do, so its difficult to keep up with a fast moving thread.

Two Dissers have pushed that thread by 2,500 of the 5,000 approx posts since December, and it has been moving faster than this thread part 1, where a considerable amount of people contribute, and its enjoyable to read.

Kristina, I really don't think it was all the posts either. However something was slowing the boards up. I just don't think they know what it is and are trying to figure it out.

That would be Lisa...and actually she was assigned to moderate our thread at that time (she's a cruise thread mod). She is also going on the cruise but not as part of our group as i understand it....

Caroline has many posts too (pyramid2000). She is still coming but i think her many family obligations (wife/mom/cheuffer (ok i know i can't spell) /softball coach/girl scout helper/business owner/etc... have kept her off the boards.

i still talk with her from time to time but she's going too...

I read and posted some of the previous Mod /Webmaster reports, it seems when you access a thread, the server looks from post 1, each time, to the last page of posts, and then brings that up, he longer the thread, the more work the server has to go through.

Now think of that with a popular thread where many are accessing it all at the same time and the issue is compounded.

Maybe they be back for reference only. No posting.

On the podcast this week they talked about the latest upgrade they did. They increased the number of servers and set it all up for load balancing (should spread the load over all the servers and they stay in sync with each other) Even with that, the boards were still slow....

I don't really mind if they cap the length of threads at 10,000 - we would just have multiple threads for one like ours. The older ones would still be there for reference and maybe it wouldn't be as intimidating for new folks joining our cruise!

I'm not saying that . . . I've just been worried that so many people feel the boards are moving faster with the big threads not on . . . I'm sure we will get the old thread back in some form . . . it's just a little disconcerting.

Stacy may be right about the images -- or the tickers -- as well. It would be nice to get some concrete data about what can/should be done. Personally I don't even think a one day trial with the big threads gone can be taken as proof since there are other days randomly when things post quicker than others. It's a very complicated system. Hopefully there will be a way to balance the speed of the boards with the social goodwill generated by a thread such as ours.

I agree that two posters taking up 50% of the thread's posts is excessive -- but here there are so many of us that post quite a bit -- it's not as though we could recreate the community any other way than via posting.

That was Lisa . . . even in the early days of this thread, no one or two or even three or four people completely dominated the thread, in my opinion.
