I wonder if they could eliminate the old pics etc. Some sort of timeframe for them to go expire? Perhaps that would help in a small way.

Gotta run and get dressed. Yes haven't done so yet. Sad.

Its Lisa not Linda and she is a DIS Moderator , and your point is ????:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

pirate:
I know she is a moderator. My point was that someone that has not posted on this thread for a long time is still in the lead on counts.

That would be Lisa...and actually she was assigned to moderate our thread at that time (she's a cruise thread mod). She is also going on the cruise but not as part of our group as i understand it....

Caroline has many posts too (pyramid2000). She is still coming but i think her many family obligations (wife/mom/cheuffer (ok i know i can't spell) /softball coach/girl scout helper/business owner/etc... have kept her off the boards.

i still talk with her from time to time but she's going too...

I thought that she was not going on this cruise. Did she just pull out of our thread?

Hey what the heck:confused3 , I go to check the board and it's not there. Called Cheryl then she tells me "oh yeah we had to start a new one".
Thanks Crash for starting up a new trhead.

Arlene go pick up those kids.

Part of what might help is getting rid of OLD threads ...If your Cruise has already passed then it shoud retire the "planning" thread and maybe have a smaller "lets stay in contact Thread" That might help ??:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

I had thought the same thing, but I was told recently by a third party that she is still going, but not participating on the thread. There were some less-than-friendly moments last summer that hopefully have been put behind us and won't re-occur.

?

And again I ask , And your point is ??? I guess I dont understand what her post count has to do with anything ???:confused3

I remember someone suggesting that recently, Todd -- I believe they suggested another forum for past cruises. Again, a good idea provided we are sure that the people in charge of the Dis servers understand all the causes of what makes the Disboards slow at times. It might require several different actions. Also, this is a function in part of the success of the boards -- which leads to your previous point about potentially needing more/better/faster servers.

Coral, I'm pretty sure she is still on this cruise...

and yes she r-u-n-n o-f-t'd some time ago (before you came around)

We don't speak of that time because some things happened around board/thread etc... that many didn't like..

We're better now :lovestruc Let's keep it that way :rolleyes1

Never mind- it was simply an observation.

I first posted on the original thread in Jan of 07 but did not post a ton. I remember some stuff but didn't pay a lot of attention since I did not understand it.

Back to your original programming......:)

I agree that two posters taking up 50% of the thread's posts is excessive -- but here there are so many of us that post quite a bit -- it's not as though we could recreate the community any other way than via posting.

A busy thread is fine, if its from a number of posters and not just one or two dominating it, its when it turns a bit into a competition,

And I know I know, its from hindsight over all the years I have been here.

For example the July 28th 2007, thread was very very slow I think 1,000 posts in the first year, ( not all me), then it took off, but ended on a decent 17,000 odd, great people on that thread, great cruise, just a little fluff, (and I did a bit of that as well.)

But it is cruise meets and not pirates, contrary to history I didn't introduce pirates to the Med thread, but it was a response to another post, someone who is on this cruise as well.

The pirates on the Med thread were OK, as the pirate run might be just 10 or so posts, and generally any 'fluff' poster didn't get it, did they!

The good news is we might get more dissers here as long threads can put people off.

That was Lisa . . . even in the early days of this thread, no one or two or even three or four people completely dominated the thread, in my opinion.

Yes this thread has been well balanced from the start with great people all contributing and I am sure some great friendships will be confirmed on the 15 nights of our trip.

Exactly -- it's amazing how well you can get to know people this way, isn't it, Tracy? I was a long time lurker on the boards -- just took information from others until I started to feel badly that I had information sometimes for people but didn't "give back." I had some contact with cruise meets but nothing too intense until starting to post here. And at first I found this thread a little intense, too -- until I started to realize that I didn't have to keep up, could just jump in and enjoy whenever I had the time.

Now I can't imagine what this upcoming cruise would have been like had I not gotten to know so many people ahead of time. I know that the friendships I made on the meet thread for the July 28 Med cruise last summer made the trip that much better.

I often use multi-quotes to S-P-R-E-A-D the thread less ... however on the other hand I am guilty of originating a number of image postings... as well as serving as the catalyst for others doing the same.

I might add that I feel the images often contribute a dimension that adds a certain quality to the community. Taken with restraint (no HUGE files posted) and if quoted images are kept to a managable level I think it should be OK. In terms of the computer power and bandwidth necessary to load pages - I'd say everyone's circumstances vary. The hosting site for the images posted certainly plays a role - as much as the computer receiving it - and thier bandwidth speed. As for what role the host serves - well, it does pass the commands and addresses ... and it's only handling the load of ONE page... and not the burdon of 80,000 pages being processed.

So how the longer threads pose a problem is odd to me - except in the case where many of those pages in the MIDDLE of the thread are being constantly referenced. Well... even then, it should not pose a problem. COnsider, we have hundreds of actively viewed pages here in the community at normal peak periods... so the system processes this at any given moment (or minute).... such is the POWER of processing the requests from around the world.

So... I've seen some folks say they hear of the speed being better, and I see others posting it is no different. I have NOT been online much since mid December so I can't really say I've noticed much one way or the other.

And finally, I tend to think it may be more of a processing or software bottleneck then a burdon rooted in pure volume here. And certainly not the incremental volume added by a few images posted - especially given my general absence in the last month or so ... I can at least declare the slowing of the boards cannot possibly be MY FAULT ... since I wasn't here, right?

So....

I'm INNOCENT!

That was a wonderful thread -- and you are right, the pirate runs didn't start up as many pages before the pirate. Although really if I check in and see there has been one, I just skip or skim those pages. I can see how it could put off someone just coming to look for information, though. No matter what happens to this thread/the old thread, we should always ensure that on the first page there is a link to the pirate zone website for those looking for specific information.
