Wow...I have not heard that one before! That would be wonderful. I wonder if its a school policy or district or other. Anybody else hear of this before? I will have to call both the schools, since my kids will miss the first few days too!
It's probably different everywhere. Here it's basically left up to the prinicpal- who in our experience basically leaves it up to the teachers. So we haven't had any problems in the past since all the teachers were totally fine if our kids missed any school for a vacation (it's always been beginning the last couple of days of school or a day/two days at the beginning or end of a holiday break- all times they aren't really doing a whole lot in school anyway) BUT this year was different... begining of school. so far I talked with the elementary principal (youngest two) and he basically said the same thing. He said that even though they are usually automatically registered (ie: if they went to that elementary the previous year and are again- we don't even have to go register in the summer/etc. like new students have to) that he'd make sure they weren't automatically registered and basically they didn't miss a day until the first day they came.
(however, for us he said he'd "ghost" them in a class so it would all be set where they'd go instead of having to squeeze them in a week after school started- which is helpful since we both agreed there are a few boys that my DS doesn't need to be in the same class with them. Long story but this last year was a doozy- with him in a class that was almost ALL boys and a few of them trouble makers..... -some even got suspended a few times during the year and DS kinda joined in with misbehavior at times to be "cool" or "liked" by the other boys. So I'm glad he's ghosting him in a class those boys aren't in!)
I haven't talked with the highschool yet EXCEPT for band... because eldest has to miss some of the summer band camp before school starts. I didn't (and still don't) know when would be the best time to mention this.. before or after registration. I'm kinda afraid if we wait till after registration maybe it will be easier since she's already got her classes. I'm kinda afraid if they say the same thing as elementary that she'll have a hard time getting in the classes she needs to be in for the credits she needs her freshman year. In her case I might rather her be counted absent than mess up the entire year by not getting the classes she needs. We'll see. Last year I noticed signs up by the highschool when I drove by- that said the dates of registration and it was late July. I called before the end of the year to find out when THIS years registration would be and they said they didn't know yet.. and I haven't seen signs yet! I just hope registration isn't different this year and smack right when we'll already be gone! hope hope hope
