Over the past 6 months my son has had 6 severe headaches. They almost always take place in the middle of the night. He wakes in tears and the pain is so severe he can barley move. We have tried to give him medication and each time he has ended up throwing up within minutes. Usually I sit and rub his head and back until he falls back to sleep. When he wakes in the morning he is just fine. This morning for the first time he woke with one. I gave him medicine and he got sick. He had an empty tummy so it was just the medicine, but he managed to bust blood vessels all over his little face.
I decided to search the net on headaches in children and got a bit scared. So I called my pediatrician, which made a apt. for this afternoon. After describing his systems she was concerned and has schedule an MRI for Wed. at 7:00 p.m. I am so scared for my little guy. I did request that they give him "sleepy juice" before the procedure because he will need an IV and my husband and I can't be with him.
Please if you can send any good thoughts, kind wishes, or prayers. My Hayden needs them.

Thank you so much!!
Kim

UPDATE:

Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes for Hayden. He was so brave during his MRI. They even let my husband stay with him. We hope to have the results this afternoon, tom. morning at the latest. Please keep Hayden in your thoughts. We have never been so scared. I will post when I know something.

Thanks again,
Kim

MRIs are scary stuff for kids - the loud noises and having to hold so still.

DD started having bad migraines last year in Kindergarten and had to have an MRI.

We modified her diet to eliminate MSG (canned soups, ramen noodles, chinese and japanese food), Nitrates (hot dogs, bacon), chocolate (especially dark chocolate) and any other triggers. Constant exposure to loud noise, bright sunlight or overstimulation of the senses can cause migraines too. Believe it or not kids this age can suffer stress - from school or home situations - which can cause the headaches as well.

We were referred to a Pediatric Neurologist who put DD on preventative meds but they made her so sleepy that we eventually weaned her off of those and just try to control her headaches by avoiding triggers and medicating at the first sign of a headache. The doctor told us we could alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 2 hours and put a heating pad on the back of DDs neck to alleviate the headaches. Having her lay down in a cool quiet room helped too.

Good luck.

Thank you all so much!!! I will post Thur. and let you know how he does with the MRI. His doctor hopes to have the test back Fri. I will let you know.
Thank you again
Kim

Ask the tech if you can stay with him during the MRI. My husband was able to do that with my mother and it worked out just fine. If they allow you to, at least when the noise stops, you can talk to him.

Best wishes that everything turns out just fine.

Sounds a lot like me and the migraines I had as a child. My first one was in the middle of class when I was in the 4th grade. Scary stuff. I bet that's what it is and pray that it's nothing worse. :grouphug:

Prayers and PD for you and your son. I know you must be crazy with worry...that's what we moms do best! Please keep us updated.
Best wishes :grouphug:

:grouphug: I know what you're going through. DS6 just had an MRI in January. I know that it's scary (for the parents mostly), but hopefully you'll get some information that can help your little guy.

If your DS is having a sedated MRI, it will be a breeze for him. He'll literally sleep right through it.

Just some information that I wish someone had given me.

-If you're with your son when he's sedated, be prepared that he will most likely jerk a little as he goes under. Nobody told me about it and I started crying thinking that DS was seizing. The Dr. and technicians said that it was completely normal.

-The machine is incredibly noisy. They let me stay in the room with him, but I had to remove all metal and wear earplugs.

-The test itself can take up to 30 minutes

-If your DS is sedated, he will have trouble walking straight for the rest of the day. We had to carry DS for the first part of the day that he was home, and watch /hold on to him for the rest of the day.

Again, good luck, and I hope that they can find a way to help your DS.

Good luck. Keep us posted. We're thinking of you and your DS. :wizard:

I'll be praying for you both!!! My ds had an MRI when he was 2. No matter how old/young they are, we'll always worry. Keep us posted!!

Sending more pixie dust and prayers for Hayden. :grouphug: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

My DD 8 just went through the MRI a few weeks ago (she has "something' on her spine and will be having biopsy on her spine 3 days after we get back from Disney :( ) She had the contrast also, no sleepy juice on the first one. She was in there for 1 1/2 hours!! She cried somewhat towards the end and complained of a headache. I asked originally for something to knock her out and they said they only do it under 5 and that she would be fine....she wasn't. Once they found the spot on her vertibrae they requested another and this time she had everything including an anestesiologist (sp) during the procedure. She doesn't remember a thing and is not nervous about the biopsy now that she's been 'asleep'. I was allowed to stay w/ her during the first one but she couldn't hear my voice to comfort her and of course couldn't move. Please....question if they have that numbing cream that they can put on 15/30 mins b4 IV ( he won't feel a thing) Push for some kind of med to knock him out...its scary enough and you don't want him to have to go thru this again. Good luck w/ your DS and try to be as persistant as possible about the cream and the meds.
