6yr old DS needs MRI......UPDATE!!! post1: GOOD NEWS! Post 34

Poor little guy! I hope all goes well for him. Hang in there. :grouphug:

my ds is 9, and he had an mri at 8 because he was having what i suspected were migranes (i have a terrible history of), but i wanted to make sure nothing else was going on-so i insisted and the doctor ordered one up.

we had wonderful techs that explained the process to him, but i think what helped him a bit ahead of time was letting him know about the process and the noises he would hear. when i've had them they've always sounded like being inside a metal coffee can and having someone tap on the top-so i got a metal coffee can and had him put his ear up to it and i made tapping noises of various intensity. we also talked about how he might be inside a big tube for the pictures to be taken (did'nt happen-he ended up in an open style mri that only encased his head, and how mom could sit in the room while it was going on.

i would suggest that you find out what type of mri machine will be used, and if he has any issues with claustrophobia discuss with his pediatrician weather it might be beneficial to give him some otc that would make him a bit drowsy (for some kids benadryl works-for mine it would have made him bounce off the wall).

unfortunatly, mri's and cat scans cannot diagnose migranes-just rule out any neurological problems. for my son, the symptoms are close enough to my migranes that we were able to make a diagnosis once everything else was ruled out. i've taught him to let me know if he starts getting pre migrane symptoms like light and noise sensitivity so he can take advil and ward off a full blown one-if he ends up with a full blown headache, he knows to ask for advil, turn down the lights and sounds in his room and rest (his teacher at school keeps his advil handy and has learned to trust him to let her know if he is in need).

best wishes to your little guy, fortunatly-(from what my pediatrician and neurologist tell me) if kids start getting them before age 10 more likely than not they will stop after puberty.

Im praying for your boy, he is gonna be alright :)

Prayers to you and your little guy.

Good wishes and prayers for little Hayden, Kim. Looking for an update in a couple days. Sure is tough when our little ones are hurting. My best.

:goodvibes :goodvibes I hope all goes well. Let us know when you find out. :goodvibes :goodvibes

I'm keeping you in my thoughts. I hope you get a good night's sleep and then good news tomorrow :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Continued prayers and good wishes, Kim. Good to hear the test is done complete. The wait is always tough, my best.

This is the best day of my life!!!! :cool1: Hayden is going to be just fine. His MRI showed nothing. He will be seeing a neurologist next Wed. They think he is suffering from migraines that occur as he is transcending from one realm of sleep to the next. This we can deal with!!! :)
I can't thank you enough for all of the prayers and well wishes.

Great news!

My son has had the same symptoms as your son. We had the MRI done and a full gastric workup because of the vomiting. Thankfully, all the tests were negative. He was diagnosed with migraines. We are learning to deal with them as he gets them. We have found some triggers so we obviously avoid those things. We have also found ways that make him a little more comfortable. Good luck!
