I was wondering what toys were popular with your kids at 6 months. DS is turning 6m and want to get some good learning and interactive toys. Hoping to find ones that are able to keep his attention. Want to get him to watch less tv and movies. He loves his baby einstein videos and watching Sesame street with Elmo.

Right now we have these for him:

Baby bouncer with toys
Baby Einstein playmat
Baby Einstein jumper
Bright starts play center he can walk around when he starts walking
Various plush and puppets
A few cardboard books but is not interested in them yet.
Ring toys he can bite and throw around

DD is just about to turn 7 months. A few weeks ago we bought her a fisher price cell phone that she loves to chew on (it lights up and makes noise when you push the buttons). She also likes her nesting blocks, soft blocks, and a little "piano". Oh and her all time favorite is that dog that sings and talks when you push on his feet, hands, ears etc. I'm pretty sure it's fisher price.
We just kind of walked the toy aisle at walmart, they had a bunch of stuff for 6 months and up.
Good luck!

My DD's favorite toy by far was her baby grand piano. She still loves it.

At six months, my girls liked their own hands and feet, and they loved to be talked to. One loved the swing, while the other preferred to be on the floor on a blanket. They both loved to play in the water. They really weren't interested in any toys and had to be "led" to play with blocks, etc. -- they did not really interact with toys on their own; they wanted people. They were not aware of TV yet.

They began to show a real interest in books around five months. They first preferred black and white books . . . then bright colored books with simple objects on the page and no backgrounds, and they weren't interested in anything other than the simplest text. Often we didn't even read the books; rather, we'd talk about the colors in the books or point to animals, etc.

At a year old, they were much more interested in toys. In particular, they liked small things sized for their hands. I specifically remember a set of Pooh Bear plastic figurines, and I remember a plastic purse with things that fit into it. Around one year they liked simple things that fit together -- like a set of stacking cups in the bathtub.

I second the ideas about the stacking cups and just their own hands and feet!

Fisher Price makes a set of stacking cups which snap together into balls and one has a big yellow ball inside it too. I've seen it at grocery stores as well as toy stores.

We got DD a Leapfrog Spin and Sing Alphabet Zoo wheel when she was very little and gave it to her at 6 months (as suggested). She's almost 22 months now and still loves it! It's got different setting on it: animal sounds and the alphabet song. This is it:

It's been awhile but I remember my kids liking those stacking ring things. . .Fisher Price Rock-a-Stack I guess it's called. They also liked the light-up cell phone that the PP mentioned and those rings of teething keys. I think at that age they were just as interested in anything they could shake, bang together and manipulate with their hands. That included everyday household items. . measuring cups, plastic bowls and a spoon. I think this is the age that they started getting into the whole peek-a-boo thing too. I remember them getting a huge kick out of a jack-in-the-box toy my mom had. We would have to crank it for them, but they loved it. HTH

At that age, all my DD wanted to do was look at board books. We would sit her on the floor, surrounded with a pile, & she was quite happy just looking at them.

My girls didn't show a lot of interest in toys at that age. They wanted us. They loved to be talked to and would babble back. They loved music and would happily sit and listen as long as we were within sight. We read books all of the time. Mirrors were good too. DD13 loved playing peek a boo in the mirror. They also liked games that were cause and effect based. I'd stack the blocks, they'd knock it over! Or fill a cup with water and they'd pour it out. Give them a sippy cup in the high chair or car seat and they'd throw/drop it, just to see if one of us would pick it up and bring it back. That one will continue for months if you let it. I loved this age! They are developing such little individual personalities and nothing in the world makes them happier than being with you and being in the middle of what you are doing. One warning with toys, watch how loud they are. Our pediatrician warned us to cover the speakers with medical tape when we could, the sound levels are usually too loud for such little ears.

I remember buying a real remote for one of the kids so he'd leave ours alone :) My 7 month old seems to like the remotes and cell phones but won't play with the colorful toy ones!

I just bought him a couple of fisher price little people classic play sets and he loves them. Bonus that all of the small peices go into the big toy and are portable!

I second the mirrors. My daughter loved the mirrors at daycare so I bought a child safe mirror (meant for the crib) and set it up on the floor next to her.

Stacking cups. aAbig, soft block shaped thing that would play different songs when you turned it to a different side (by Baby Einstein I think) This was great because there was no special button to press--just simply turn it to a new side and it would play. We had a baby flashlight toy that flashed different colors (I loved this one as it wasn't noisy. I think it was Fisher Price).
We also had a little people car that she had fun rolling back & forth next to her.

At 6 months the toys were still simple and inexpensive.:)

At 6 months, there weren't a ton of toys she needed/wanted. She liked the mirror, as others have mentioned. My mom would buy her whatever that season's Hallmark singing/motion toy was (you know, the Halloween tree, the Christmas snowmen). She LOVED these. Books and music were important to us, so we purchased a few kiddie CDs that we could tolerate and bought more board books. This is your chance to pick your favorite board books, before the child has a preference. Sandra Boynton and Karen Katz were big hits around age 1.

From 10 months - 2 1/2 years she loved the Fisher Price piano. It looks like they don't make our model anymore, but we purchased it at a used baby store (Once Upon a Child) for a steal! Here is the one we have:

Playsilks started to be a big hit around that age. Super soft fabric, bright colors, and oh so soft. DS loved playing peek a boo with them, or just sticking them into cups and boxes.

As a bonus, he's three now and still plays with them every day.

DD loved (and still loves) the real items instead of the toys.

I don't know if you have one but DD loved the toys on the exersaucer at that point.
