Great photo's, how did you capture the bench one, was it just right timing or did you use off camera lighting?

Great photo's, how did you capture the bench one, was it just right timing or did you use off camera lighting?

It was taken in a tunnel that runs under a road and leads from one area of the Dallas zoo to another. We were walking through it on our way out and I saw the lights in the ceiling of the tunnel and the way it was hitting the bench. I didn't use any external lighting/flash or anything. That is just the way it looked. I got lucky!

LOL DH and DD were looking at me really strange wondering what I saw that they didn't and why I was taking a photo of a bench (they look at me like that a lot). When they saw the photo - they understood.

Hi All-
Looking at a new camera. I am currently considering Canon G10/11 or Canon SX20. What I am looking for:
Image quality, speed, ease of use, zoom.
I like the G10/11, they are more flexible. I could do 'more' with the image if I choose. I love the 20X optical zoom of the SX20.
I see the G10/11 have the option to add lenses to increase zoom/wide angle. But besides seeing they are offered I know nothing about them.

Anyone out there with experience with these cameras and the extra lenses the G10/11 offer. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Leave for WDW in 6 weeks and would like to have the camera (and know how to use it properly!) by then. Thanks again!

Well, first things first. If you're willing to carry a G10/11 with the extra bulk of add-on lenses, why not consider a entry DSLR? Even the cheap lenses will outperform (run circles around) the G series with screw on lenses. Given the price of the G10/11 to start with, your pretty much in the same price ballpark too.

Do you like the portability of the G10/11 or the superzoom (telephoto) of the SX20? they are really two different models with different features. If image quality is important and you don't mind the larger sizes it might make sense to get an entry level DSLR. (But using a DSLR does take some learning)

Thanks for your posts. I am looking for the zoom capability for sporting events (kids playing soccer/swimming). The process started w/a DSRL in mind, but then budget vs features we will use vs WAF (wife acceptance factor) made me start thinking about these models.
I much prefer the G10/11 because of functionality and form factor. But the entire new camera search has been based around the ability to take pics of the kids while they are involved in activities w/out them looking like little specs.
Our current point and shoot is an SD900. Had a canon prior to this as well. I have always been very happy w/image quality. For budget purposes, maybe I go with the SX20, keep the SD900 for pocket use and if this proves to be unsatisfying go w/DSRL in a year or 2.

I am happy with it and much lighter than my D60 DSLR and lenses

Either the G10 or G11 are much better choices. You don't need any other lenses with the G10. It is larger than a standard P&S but you will get much better pictures and it is still smaller than a DSLR . The noise on the S20 examples are part of what you avoid with the G10 unless you get into a high ISO. The G10 etc also can take any of the Canon flash units. Even the smallest one will significantly improve many photographs over an on board flash.

I should have just bought a T1i (was offered as an anniversary present, I pushed it off).
So now we booked an unscheduled trip to WDW in Nov. and really would like a new-better camera. Because of the trip I had decided to wait on the DSRL and go a step down. But I still want to achieve-strong Zoom for kids sporting events.
On the G10/11 the zoom is 5X. I have not heard great things about the quality of the lens attachments for these to increase the zoom.
Maybe this is a case of-you cant get it all. I will really have to think this one out.
I really feel that to go G10/11 I should just go with the T1i.

If you want a "strong" zoom you really should go with a DSLR and not try to make a G10 what it is not. Look at the photo I posted in the TC thread. That was taken with an XTi. If you want zoom and optical qiality you want the DSLR.

Does anyone have the Canon Power Shot SX20 IS??? I just got it last night along with the Sony DSC HX1 because I couldn't decide which one I wanted. I will obviously take one back but only had a little time to try them out at Best Buy in Cedar Rapids (an hour from home). Our Best Buy in Dubuque does not carry any high zoom cameras and I thought while I was there I'd look. I was completely set on the Sony (after doing research online) but the Canon feels more comfortable in my hand, has more megapixels and is $130.00 cheaper. It also takes AA batteries instead of a rechargeable one and uses the SD cards instead of the memory sticks like the Sony, which I can stick directly into my computer (I like that option). I've been researching the Canon this morning on the Internet but want to do some more checking. Thought I'd ask you guys your opinions.

My DW and I bought this camera a couple of months ago and we like it a lot. We've used it to take pictures at soccer games, sunset shots while vacationing in Denver and general pictures and we have been very pleased with it. There are still a lot of features that we have to try but just haven't had the time or opportunity to try them out yet.
