50 Shades of Grey

I'm currently reading this and I'm also hooked.

I knew about the connection to Twilight before I started reading, so I was picturing Robert Pattinson as Christian. But I just had a thought that I think Robert Downey Jr would be great in that role! I loved him as Iron Man. He kind of has that arrogant handsomeness down pat in Iron Man.

And maybe Rachel McAdams as Ana.

Robert Pattinson would be good but I think RDJ is too old, much like my pick of Christian Bale.

Rachel McAdams would be good too.

What about the kid that played Cpt Kirk in the remake of Star Trek?

I think you are going to need some dewy eyed fresh faced barely legal aged chick for the female lead. Maybe a former Disney Channel star looking to break out of her teen-idol mold. :p

You just made me think of the girl who played the oldest daughter in the movie The Descendents. She was excellent in that movie. I believe she's also in that show about the american teenager (can't remember the name of it). She is a fresh faced girl and a great actress.

I think you're right about RDJ being too old. I really love Ryan Gosling and he would probably fit as Christian.

A few years ago I wrote Twilight fan fiction and remember all about the Master of the Universe and The University of Edward Masen stories being pulled to be reworked for traditional publishing. I wrote in canon using the same rules/characterizations that Meyers wrote so I had no interest in changing things around including the PG rating.
But many of these types of stories can be found on fanfiction.net and especially, Twilighted.net are so AU/AH (alternate universe/alternate history) that they are essentially brand new characters, settings and stories with people who happened to be named Bella and Edaward with dark or auburn hair, respectively that they are virtually unrecognizable from the one's Meyer established.
I never understand why these authors didn't go ahead and write original fiction (which is what they are) and workshop them with writer's groups (which is what they are using the internet to do). And most of this is Showtime after Dark stuff anyway.
I like stories, not smut so I didn't stay in the fanfiction world for very long. But if this is your cup of tea, join Twilighted.net to read alot of this stuff for free - just mentally replace Rebecca for Bella and Steve for Edward and you have original fiction :)

I liked the trilogy, however I have not read Twilight. I wish the main characters were older then their twenties though.

Keep hearing about this book. Must get my hands on it. Kindle edition is still expensive.

What do they mean by fan fiction?
Is it based on Twilight, or so similar to twilight that it more than just in the same genre?

People write their own fiction based on popular, published fiction. It's for fun and not profit, but this book became so popular that Random House picked it up. They supposedly made many changes to it so that it wouldn't be plagairizing, and yet there is always a hazy line between what is considered plagairism and what is considered an original work.

Thanks, I thought fan fiction was like you described.I was wondering how they were selling it. i am surpprised they would do that, was Random House the pub for Twilight?

Well the original fanfiction "Masters of the Universe" actually used the original character names Bella, Edward etc. The author scrubbed the Twilight names off herself and renamed them Anastasia and whatever and was then selling them as self-published books "Shades of Grey" and the other two via the Amazon self-publishing platform.

She also had quite a marketing campaign going via various blogs and message boards geared toward the romance/erotica readers. Seriously, these were one of the most heavily word of mouth promoted self-published books I've ever seen. There was a huge amount of fuss over how she was "spamming" boards and getting her friends and fans to do the same. It was like a drama a week over these books. It all kind of went viral and then Random House picked up the publishing rights and reissued her self-published version under their imprint. Random House has stated that the books are original enough not to violate any copyright issues but when the blog Dear Author ran it through the software college professors use to check for plagerism, they found an 89% match rate of Shades of Grey to Masters of the Universe.

I'm not convinced yet that Stephanie Meyer won't have some sort of legal response because the ties of the book to Twilight are quite clear. It would be an interesting case.

Aside from being written terribly and having a completely unlikeable heroine, I don't see much in common with Twilight. How in the world will this thing get made into a movie?

Everywhere you see "vampire" just replace it with the phrase "BDSM enthusiast" and it is virtually the same book! :lmao:

I dunno. Considering to be anywhere close to the book, it's going to have to include a heck of a lot of graphic sex scenes, I would think that most A-list movie stars would probably give it a pass.

I definitely see similiarities between 50 and Twilight but don't care lol

I loved Twilight, I LOVE 50!!!! Yes it is not well written but there is something about that Christian Grey lol. Unfortunatley he's like a unicorn, doesn't really exist

Not true...there are a plethora of handsome, jealous, possessive, emotionally damaged, abusive and controlling men out there. Why any woman would want that for real is beyond me.

I read all 3 on my kindle. Not great literature but a much needed diversion from the everyday stresses. I went from reading about Custer & Crazy Horse to 50 - I'm sure the folks at amazon are beginning to wonder:rolleyes1

Does anyone else NOT like this book? I've heard so much about it that I started to read it. I'm about halfway through the book, and there are many many 'scenes' in it, but there is no point or plot to it whatsoever. I'll probably finish this book, but wouldn't even think to read the other 2.
