Fork and Screen

Welcome back to another installment in my PTR! I apologize for my lack of updates and absence from this PTR, but I have been pretty busy lately! Exams coming up, but good news is I have been accepted into a sixth form!!! :cool1:

The four A-Levels I am doing are:
~French
~Government and Politics
~Economics
~Business Studies

We shall see where these subjects take me! Wish me luck as I am really nervous about starting at a new school. :(

Anyway, back to trip planning and reading another DIS'er's Dining Report gave me another idea for our trip...

Fork and Screen is a cinema experience. Essentially, the movie theater also functions as an upmarket restaurant. You pay for your movie ticket, and order off of an extensive menu before watching the film. During your film, the food gets brought out and you can enjoy it in a spacious cinema seat complete with a table.

As I said, the menu is as extensive as any normal restaurant, and the food is said to be great quality too. Here are some parts of the menu, taken from the Disney Food Blog.

Aimed at a more adult audience, there is still a kid's menu and children are allowed in accompanied by an adult.

This is definitely a possibility, and I think it would be a good idea when we are staying at Reunion. Anything that lets us experience American culture and things that Americans do is a great thing in my book.

Burns Night 2013

Now for a short update on the fundraiser Burns Night that my parents organized to raise money for our local Amateur Theatrical Society. It was good fun and so here are some photographs.

Some background: Burns Night is a night in January (ours was belated) where people across the globe celebrate the life of Robert Burns, arguably Scotland's most successful poet. An evening is spent listening to the recitation of poetry, eating delectable Haggis, Neeps and Tatties and taking part in traditional Scottish dancing.

My dad dressed in Scottish attire...

And my mum dressed accordingly...

I helped in the kitchen serving up food.

And tried to create a marketable dish! (Not bad if I don't say so myself!)

The meal finished with tea, home-made shortbread and various other desserts...

Then there was chatting and dancing...

I just had to share the Hidden Mickey I made out of Haggis! (My dad later squashed it with a spoon... or was it a fork...?!)

Coming up... more WDW planning and ideas!

I love that you plan your family's vacation, I wish I could do that! My mom enjoys planning too though, so she takes the lead and I just help. I'm planning my own trip for August right now though with my friends, it's a lot of fun! And my family's trip is in the beginning of November, probably the same time you'll be there!

Regarding all your restaurant possibilities, here's what I can tell you from what you have so far...

Liberty Tavern is my family's favorite table service restaurant in MK (though we haven't tried Be Our Guest yet, so this could change). We've gone both for lunch and dinner, but usually we prefer to go for lunch because you can order off a menu rather than family style service. Both are really good though!

We went to Tony's Town Square once and never went back. We live in New Jersey, so we have a lot of family owned Italian places and the food just wasn't up to par with the Italian food we get at home. We're probably just picky though xD

We did Le Cellier once and I remember liking it. The pretzel bread is amazing, we ended up asking for extra that we put in out bag and snacked on the rest of the day. I remember enjoying my meal too. I think we were there for lunch though.

The Garden Grill is wonderful, I love the experience. I think the menu's changed since I've been there, but the rotation is awesome and so is seeing all the characters!

And you'll be there for the Food & Wine festival which is AMAZING! We're there for it every year. It started out that me and my siblings were too young and unadventurous to try anything, but now that we're older, we LOVE IT and so do my parents. Last year we planned to go around for lunch, and then ended up canceling our dinner reservation so we could go back for some seconds. It's filling, but it's spread out with all the walking around so it's enjoyable too. And you can use your snack credits. We only use them for the festival. It's one of my favorite parts of the trip!

We were going to try Crystal Palace our last trip, but then the EMH for the park moved up - we weren't going to waste EMH eating, so we cancelled our ADR.
We have the same plan this time, but hopefully EMH won't get moved up for us! We like CP for breakfast, but it isn't one of our real favourites.

We love funnel cake and waffles so I am keen to try Shady Hollow. Are they included as a snack credit? We don't really get them here so love to indulge in them in WDW.

That is so cool that your DH is half Norwegian! How'd he find it? The food to us tasted very fresh, and a lot more like the buffets we had here. We will definitely try it again- it was our first restaurant at WDW.

I sure don't like spicy food either! But my dad is the total opposite of your DH, he loves spicy food! Not sure if he'd like Marrakesh though.
Biergarten was fun, we went there once. But we lived in Germany for two years, and I don't think the food was very good compared to what we were accustomed to over there. It was OK though. If you like to meet people and get good table companions it is interesting, and the show is fun.
Ah, so it was not too authentic? That puts me off alone. I'd like to get an authentic meal, but the meeting people part sounds such fun and is what made me want to go.

Coral Reef was a wonderful place to eat. We were right next to the aquarium and it was great fun! None of us like seafood, I had chicken, DS had mac and cheese the first time and some sort of chicken the second time. They also have steak, so there is plenty to choose from. Would feel odd eating fish in front of them!
So you liked it? Many people don't! My mum loves seafood but the rest of us don't. If there are other options then it'll be a better choice for us!

You totally should stay for a longer time! It is lovely and relaxing. WDW has so many recreational activities to take advantage of! We hope to rent a boat and explore the lakes. Also, Chip n' Dale's Campfire at FW sounds fun (and free which always pleases my dad!). Good to hear good things about the WWoHP- would you say that it is worth it even for non Harry Potter fans? Wisconsin sounds pretty cold! It is horrible like that here, and so, so rainy. Really gets to me sometime.

I guess Minecraft pleases all ages! It gets annoying hearing of 'creepers' and 'Steve' the whole time. I have actually heard of DisneyQuest, but not really looked into it. It totally sounds like Willum's cup of tea, thanks so much for letting me know! I think we'd all enjoy a bit of time in DisneyQuest from how you describe it! My dad and brothers hate shopping, so they can go off to DisneyQuest whilst my mum and I go off shopping in DTD! I never got a chance to look round all of the shops last trip. You should plan an extra long trip for when your DS comes in college break- I feel bad for Americans who just visit for 4-7 days. That isn't long at all! You surely cannot see everything! (Whilst I am envious of you guys being closer to WDW too!)

Thanks for all the advice! It has been so helpful! I am off to research DisneyQuest now! We have a 14 day ticket that covers everything- DisneyQuest luckily is included so it sounds like it is worth a visit for sure!

With TTS, I don't know if we were lucky or what. I had read horrible reviews, but wanted to see Lady and the Tramp, and DS loves pasta, so it was a nice place to cool off in mid-afternoon and have a late lunch. Its food may have been better since we were the only ones in the place, so they weren't rushed. I had forgotten, we went this past November as well, I was there with DS and our friends. That was good too. I have tasted really good Italian food though, this was more basic.

CP doesn't have a good breakfast? The main reason we wanted to go there was just to get into the park before it opens, and get some good clear pictures in front of the castle. MK was open around 7 am every spring break, so we didn't get a chance since I don't think they start serving that early!

With Shady Hollow, I would assume the funnel cake is a snack credit. I have never used the dining plan (we usually take the discount on the hotel since we don't always eat the way we would need to so as to use the DDP in full).

DH liked the kaltbord, and he said the food was good (not as good as his Norwegian raised grandmother though!). I liked the kaltbord as well; I wasn't feeling very good that day, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I felt better.

With Biergarten, I think part of the problem might be not all foods are available in the US, or very expensive to import. In fact, some items like Black Forest ham is not able to be imported to the US because of some food laws, and that was one of my favorite foods while I was over there. The sausages also left something to be desired. I know many who work there are from that country, but they can only work with what they get. It may be a similar thing at Rose & Crown that you noticed when you ate there. But the atmosphere is the other fun part of it, and that I enjoyed.

I was put off by the bad reviews for Coral Reef, but I really wanted to see that aquarium. We took the first opening of the day, figured that would be good for us to get up front. It was a four person table, there were only three of us. My DS fell hard for the Mac 'n Cheese, which was one of the reasons we went back, but they did not have it any more. Sat one row back our second time, with our friends and they liked it too. I was surprised the food was good, based on what I had heard.

Maybe we are lucky because we tend to eat early and late, avoiding crowds and grumpy servers . The one time we ate at a crowded place, the California Grill, the food wasn't great and the server was so rude she had me in tears. Never will go back there again.

We all want to stay longer, we just don't have the time :(. DS is in both cross-country and track at high school, and taking college-prep courses, so we can only go when the schools are off. We sometimes have a long weekend in November, as the schools in our county are closed for the annual elections and a teacher's workday, but that is very rushed, although the crowds are lower. Spring Break gives us more time, but it very crowded. Then we have to stay on site both places. WDW gives us EMH, and Universal gives us FOTL, and an early entry into Harry Potter. Once DS goes off to college, I hope to take longer trips; he may have more time off with college than he does with high school if he wants to come with us. He probably will if his friend comes at the same time :) with her mom (her mom and I are friends, so it works great when we travel - he is with his best friend, and I have my friend and my DH!).

Regarding Harry Potter, if you have not read the books or seen the movies, some of the attractions you would not understand. But it is a pretty village, and the Forbidden Journey is an exciting ride, even if you might not understand what you are seeing. They have two roller coasters, but that is it for the rides. The food wasn't that great there, although they do have a sweet shop! My friend is not a fan, but she had seen and heard enough that she understood some of it, and she had fun. FJ was our favorite ride, we rode it once at early entry and then hit the single rider line to ride again for a few days! Not sure if a single rider line is doable with your little brother, although DS and our friends rode in one car and DH and I were together in the second. But not sure how often that happens.

DS is not playing Minecraft at the moment, something about migrating servers but says he will get on afterwards. I would like to go back to DQ and do CyberMountain, I loved building my own coaster :hyper:! It just hasn't worked out time-wise! We have been there twice though, enjoyed it both times.

I guess I am lucky in that respect. It's fun taking the lead! That sounds amazing- I'd love to go on a trip with a friend or two. I turn 18 in 1 year, 5 months and 3 days!!! Yippee! (Can you tell I'm looking forward to it?!) Maybe then I can go with friends. That is amazing, we definitely are going at the same time! We're there October 30th- November 16th. It would be so cool if we actually bumped into eachother!

It is comforting to hear that someone likes LTT- mainly the reviews I read are negative! I'm still trying to decide between lunch and dinner. I thought the family style would be more homely and 'American', but I'm not sure. I think we'll be pleased either way. :scratchin

I didn't even know that there were great Italian restaurants in New Jersey...! Here, we have loads of Italian restaurants, but none of them are that good. We have been to Sardinia and tasted true Italian pizzas which were amazing, so hoping if we choose TTS it is at least OK! :duck:

I have heard great things about Le Cellier. I think that is becoming a must. And thanks for the input on Garden Grill, many have told me it's not worth it, but ahh, the rotation sounds fantastic.

I am so glad to hear that the F&W Festival is so good! I wasn't sure it was too great except for foodies. I can't wait to use up all of my snack credits. (Last trip we had about 18 left over by the time we checked out and so just got loads of sweets, lollypops and chocolate bars (plus a Mickey and Minnie cookie, teehee). It's a shame you cannot use snack credits for the drinks, otherwise my parents really would be looking forward to it. :lmao: They don't seem to listen to how awesome it will be! :rotfl:

Thanks for joining in! It's great to finally meet someone who is going at the same time as us! :wave2:

Good to hear about TTS. I think my dad would like it- he likes the classic Disney movies. You are convincing me to try it!

Same with us with CP. We thought the decor was nice, but the food was not too great. I only really want to return there to get into MK before park opening. pixiedust:

That's fabulous that funnel cake is a snack credit- I was hoping for that. We were lucky this time in that we got 35% off and a free DDP, which is wonderful! You are also encouraging me to return to Akershus! I will have to choose whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner pretty soon!

It's a shame the food at Biergarten isn't too authentic. I suppose logistically I cannot expect it to be. I never thought about Rose and Crown that way- seems it must be like that!

My mum really loves seafood so Coral Reef is a definite possibility!

ITA! We too were very disappointed in California Grill. It is so hyped up and we were really disappointed with what it was actually like. They market the fireworks view so much, yet when we went, there was barely any room to SEE the fireworks! Our server was fantastic admittedly. I am so sorry about your experience. I hope the restaurant made it up to you somehow. :confused3

Your DS sounds very busy (yet so similar to my brother William (14).) I am glad to hear November isn't too busy. I would never want to go at spring break- the crowds would drive me crazy! (And the prices are... ... high to say the least! We couldn't afford to go then sadly anyway...) Sounds fun- you should definitely go with your DS's friend and his mum! Holidays often seem to be more fun when you go with friends. :drive:

I am sort of decided that perhaps going to US and IOA aren't too good of an idea for us this trip unless a great deal comes up. We are limited in budget and I really am not bothered about Harry Potter- it is the other rides that I thought would be more fun. I'll have to talk to my family about it and see whether they think US is worth the money (considering our limited budget). My dad is a big movie fan so I thought the whole resort would really appeal to him.

Haha! 'Migrating servers' sounds very similar to what my brothers would say. Some of the things that come out of that 8 year old's mouth we just can't understand. He got very upset the other day as a complete stranger was 'grieving' his house. We had no idea what he was talking about. :lmao: Rory is keen to go to Disney Quest though, and after reading your post we looked up Cyber Mountain- Rory wants to go very badly now to say the least! :rotfl:

The haggis is the darkest food on both in both of the photographs- the orange food is neeps (turnips) and carrots and the last is potato. You really should try haggis- most people love it when they try it. The very best haggis in my opinion is Mcsweens. If you can get hold of Mcsweens haggis, I would definitely try it! They serve a meat version and a vegetarian version which I like- the 'ingredients' in the meat haggis put me off too! The vegetarian version looks very similar and is delicious. (Tastes a little nutty which I love!)

I love your PTR!!! Can't wait to see more as you get closer to your dates :)

Thank you! I am enjoying yours too. I am so sorry to hear about your change of plans. We almost had to do that for this trip too, although under different circumstances. Everything is so much more expensive now!

Thanks for joining in! :wave2:

The Kennedy Space Centre

Welcome back! Recently I discovered that there will be a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Centre whilst we are in Orlando. My dad and Willum now very much would like to visit the KSC on that day which happens to be the 11th November- whilst we are staying onsite. Although we are missing a Disney day, we do think it will be a wonderful experience.

We hope to be able to see the rocket launch. It is going to be the SpaceX Falcon rocket which looks pretty impressive!

And hopefully afterwards we will have an opportunity to pop by the beach! :hippie:

I would love to hear personal experiences on KSC and of course, any must do's nearby!

That would be awesome. Haven't been back in years, but was invited for a shuttle launch in 1985 (last successful launch of Challenger :sad2:). It was incredible, and an amazing experience. I know we had the a tour of the complex that was arranged for us, but we haven't been back since - I'm sure much has changed.

Cocoa Beach is nearby, I wanted to visit that when I was young because my favorite show ("I Dream of Jeannie") had some location shots there. It might have a public beach.

I know we had the a tour of the complex that was arranged for us, but we haven't been back since - I'm sure much has changed.

You are getting me more excited and enthusiastic for our visit! I'm not quite sure what the difference is between a shuttle and a rocket although I am sure that shuttles are more impressive. I am sure it has changed since 1985 but you have still encouraged me! :cheer2:

I have heard of I Dream of Jeannie! I thought I recognized that name from somewhere. I have been considering visiting Cocoa Beach should we have time. We are also hoping to visit St Augustine but my parents are skeptical about the long drive!

Hi Meg,

How's the saving going?

We will be at Disney whilst you are - we arrive on the 4th of November!

Advanced Dining Reservations For now, this is a proposal- however tomorrow is our 180 day mark to book ADRs and hopefully all shall go to plan! Here are my first four days worth of DDP plans- from check-in day onwards.

Hi Meg,

How's the saving going?

We will be at Disney whilst you are - we arrive on the 4th of November!

Hello! :wave2:

I haven't been counting it accurately recently, but I should have around £800 (approx $1200?) saved up. My plans haven't... well... quite gone to plan! :scratchin The money was needed elsewhere, I suppose. Our lawnmower broke, as did our jetsprayer, my mum needed glasses and we woke up one day to find the glass shower door completely shattered! We also had to pay a man to make our garden fence higher to stop my lovely dog Oscar from jumping over into our neighbours' gardens! (And the wood wasn't cheap either!) Things are just SO expensive now! :rotfl:

Anyways... I can't wait to count the money up soon. We called and upgraded to the Deluxe DDP anyway, and so I am happy! :cool1:

That is so cool that someone else is going at the same time as us! We move over to Disney on the 5th. Where are you staying? A Disney resort, I presume? :coffee: :rotfl:

Now I have to persuade my parents to book MNSSHP and MVMCP. They aren't sure they're worth it. But a trip to Madame Tussauds and a meal out would cost about the same as one of those parties, and I know where I'd rather be! Are you going to MVMCP? I can't wait to see the Osbourne Lights too!

I feel your pain about savings not going to plan. I had a HUGE chunk saved towards the end of last year but then my car died :(. I had to surrender my savings, sell almost my entire Sylvanian Families collection and borrow money from my dad to get a new one!

That's so great you've upgraded to the Deluxe plan. I'm glad your dad came around to your way of thinking ;). We wanted to but couldn't but that's a very long story.

We're staying at Port Orleans Riverside. It's our first time staying onsite so we're really excited.

We're going to MVMCP on the 14th November. I really wish we'd timed our trip like you have so we could have gone to a Halloween Party too.

Good luck with your ADRs! You must post and let us know how you got on. Today was our ADR day and I was soooooo excited I couldn't sleep last night :rotfl:.

I too can feel your pain about money costs... we also had to put up a secondary fence on one side of our yard... Jade doesn't jump over but her and the dogs (actually the male dog) do not like each other and they bark through the fence something terrible at each other.... we have had dogs the entire 15 years since we built this house with no issues... but when they got a male dog to go with the female next door he barks and growls at the fence (which is a wood one called a shadow box... the dogs we had in the past would just ignore him but Jade has a mind of her own and figures she has as much right to bark as he does... so I gave up trying to make her stop... she is in the house most of the time anyways... but then our neighbors decide to call the dog pound and say our dog barks all the time... needless to say that didn't go over well with me since their dog is the instigater ... so we added a second solid layer of fencing and raised the height from 6 foot to 7 which was not cheap since the fence is 90 feet long on that side...
then the air conditioning hose in Danny's truck got a hole and cost us a couple hundred $ to fix...

I am so happy for you that you were able to upgrade your dining plan.... did you get your ADR's made? and if so were you able to get what you wanted?
can't wait to hear more

So glad you got to upgrade :goodvibes! Here you on the money woes. We always try to have as much saved so we can pay off our credit card bill within a statement or two. Love the trip, hate the bill following you around for a couple of months:guilty:!

I have been to MNSSHP a couple of times, the dates for MVMCP haven't worked out, but it sounds great! MNSSHP :) was awesome, you can enter the park at 4 with that hard ticket, so if you don't go to a park that day you can save one day admission...not a bad idea, it is hard to keep going until 12 midnight after a full day, next time I go I am going to make it a wake-up-late, laze around the resort day :beach: so that I am full of energy. They have a lot of characters you don't normally see, and we got a couple of PhotoPass pictures with ghost included! But the rides, especially outside of Fantasyland are practically walk-on, we spent a lot of time over on BTMRR, which at night is awesome! The 7 Dwarfs are there, and the villains, and the parade is one of the best I have seen at WDW! Hallowishes is great! Someday, will go back and also do MVMCP as well some day - I have heard something about snow falling and hot chocolate!

Just keep in mind that only a few places are open to eat, so be sure to eat before you go, or make an ADR for late afternoon in MK, maybe around 5 so you will be ready to go when the party officially starts. The party does not actually start until 7, but the crowds start thinning as they get the word that the park closes at 7. If they aren't at the party, they can't see the parade or fireworks, only party goers can stay past 7. So the park is not as crowded, which is why the rides are so easy. But there are shows, dance parties, special characters and Trick or Treating - basically they fill your bag full of candy (you can bring a special big bag, not the little bag they give you). Then you are set for candy for the rest of the trip:rotfl2:!

That does suck! And having to sell your Sylvanian Families collection must have taken a lot of bravery too! (I didn't know they were worth that much either!) We too have had car trouble- our car got to the point of breaking down once or twice a week and we had to get a new one. (Although we took out a loan for it and didn't have to sell anything luckily!)

You will LOVE staying onsite. You'll never want to go offsite again if you are anything like me! The vibe is amazing but the DDP is another huge plus on why we like it too. In fact, we would never go to WDW and not stay onsite, we just feel like the holiday wouldn't be nearly as good.

This is surreal- we are also planning to go to MVMCP on the 14th! I am hoping it will be less crowded than the first, and I only recently found out it will be Veteran's Day on the 11th so I am really hoping that day won't be crowded either! Have you bought your tickets yet? I am hoping they don't sell out.

Thanks! I got pretty much what I wanted in the end, and still might change some ADRs, but I had to do a lot of changing! Did you get into everywhere you wanted? :upsidedow

I would have been furious if that were me! How annoying, but also rude of the neighbors. It wouldn't be so bad if your dog did start the barking, but their dog was clearly the instigator. I am surprised they called the pound. And surely they should have foot the bill for the new fence... since their dog is the one causing trouble! I guess it's probably easier just to do it yourself. ::yes:: Sorry all that happened! And ouch! Cars are so expensive! Hope you don't have to pay anything else out for a broken car! :upsidedow

Thank you! Yes, we made our ADRs and got mostly what we wanted, although I had to change my days around like crazy to accommodate one or two that had limited availability. I really struggled to get into BOG but managed in the end. I was really cross with myself for not making them at 7EST but I was in school! :rotfl:

It is a relief that others also struggle a little with the bill following the holiday- as we won't have everything paid off right away. It should take us a few months to recover, but that is the same as every holiday we take.

We are having to cut down massively each month and have been saving approx $1300 a month... which is pretty good! But all of that is currently being used to pay off our overdraft. It is funny how much we have saved just by planning meals and buying what we need, rather than going to the supermarket and putting anything and everything in the shopping trolley. ::yes::

We won't have ANY park tickets available to use for when we go to MNSSHP, so that will come in handy! We should get there for 4pm to get the best value possible! Did you dress up? I am trying to persuade my family to. Would you say a 15 year old boy would be interested in going? He seems to not want to go to either parties, but I think he'd enjoy it.

Is it worth pre-paying for Photopass with all the photos taken at the party? I know we probably wouldn't just buy a few as they are expensive, but my parents don't think that the Photopass CD is worth it. Bleh.

EEEP! You are getting me excited. :rotfl: Are the lines for meeting the characters long? That might put off my family, but I would really like to do it. I mean, what is the point of paying for a ticket and not making use of everything?!

Trying to decide at the moment where to eat during the party. I am not sure if I want it to be CS but we certainly don't want to go to an expensive TS restaurant when we have the deluxe dining plan in a few days! I was thinking the Plaza but I haven't really looked at other places yet. :scratchin

Free candy! See... Halloween isn't big here. So the novelty of guarranteed candy is pretty exciting! :cheer2:
