Pam,

Ouch, I'm sorry you are still down and out with you back!

It's tough to see the kids have to make tough choices about their extra curricular activities at this early stage...Gone are the days of the three sport athletes and/or musical athletes - or athletic musicians... ;)

Yeah, that always happens. For Alicia, it was 7th grade, and a choice between dance and soccer. She didn't have enough days to do both. You all know what won. Now she's trying to juggle school (including the after school theater rehearsals and dance company), teaching and taking classes and senior team at her dance studio, working about 12 hours a week, and a boyfriend. So far, the boyfriend is getting the short end. Hope he's a patient one. Though I'm thinking the job is going to go, they don't seem to pay much attention to when she says she can work. They just schedule her whenever. Is that normal for places that employ high school students?

Seems like it. A friend of Jordan and Jared's worked at Safeway this summer. They scheduled her w/o her knowlege and when she didn't show up, they fired her. They told her that she should have "called in to check the schedule".

:confused3 :confused3

Monica, are you sure the Captain and Tenille are out on DVD? Not all the old shows have been converted. I'm still waiting for a re-release of "My So Called Life". Maybe it will happen before Alicia gets out of high school. They old copies sell for big bucks on Ebay!

yep! I got it for Christmas, along with the box set of their entire DVD collection...John was tired of me whining about Netflix not carrying it...

Waiting on My so called life too! I also liked Life Goes On - I think that's what it was called. The family with the down syndrome boy...

We didn't LET Megan work during school....and wouldn't let Jordan either, if it weren't just the teaching at the dance studio and couple hours a week. We've always told the kids that SCHOOL is their job.

We saw the Captain and Tenille in concert in LA, opening for Mac Davis....all those many moons ago. After they were done performing, Tenille came out and sat in the empty seat next to me. We had a long conversation, she was really nice.

Had to laugh...it reminded me of the story on how we got the tickets. Mom, Dad and I were going to LA so Dad thought it would be fun to see a concert. He came home and told us he'd gotten tickets to see Mac Davis and someone called "The Captains of Castille". :rotfl2: I thought Mom and I were going to die laughing.

That's kind of a life lesson, isn't it? Always check the schedule. Alicia went to work directly from school yesterday, and she did check the schedule. She was supposed to work until 7, but they had changed it until 9. So she worked until 9 with no dinner, after being at school all day. I know we all did stuff like that in college, but she's 16. I don't know if she's ready for all that yet. Time for Mom & Dad to step in, I guess.

I worked at the Y during H.S. teaching swim lessons - I usually only lifeguarded on Sundays during sports and added lessons off seasons of track and cross country. Usually only 5:30-7:00. Plenty of time to do homework. And, easy to ramp up to full time during the summer months. I had plenty of friends who did the grocery store or fast food route who had long hours until closing and didn't have the flexibility I had...

I agree with that! But Alicia really wanted to try working a bit. I guess our idea of "a bit" and the store's are two different things. Like I said, this will probably come down to an executive decision. She likes it for the money, and she has fun with the other people that work there I guess. Plus, she meets boys. Though I don't know that she needs any more boys. Isn't it still one boyfriend at a time, or am I out of touch?

Supposedly, this girl HAD checked the schedule when she left work the day before, and she wasn't scheduled at that time. As a parent, I know I'd have a hard time not going in and yelling at them for firing her. The hardest thing is to stay out of it. But in Alicia's case, it might be time to tell her that summer's over, and so is the job. That's a different kind of "parent stepping in".

I did that too. I only had to work on an occasional Saturday or Sunday and for an hour or so at night, lifeguarding. The lesson I taught were private, so those were only on weekends too. Much easier than a store!

The deal is....girls can only have ONE boyfriend, but boys can have more than one girlfriend. Nothing's changed. ;) Kidding.

Jordan likes the money she gets when working, too....and it's nice for her to have her own money. But, when it starts to interfere with her sleep and getting her homework done...then the job is the first to go.

She went out to get applications the other day, but all the jobs she wants require them to be 18. She went to the tanning salons (I had already told her she wasn't old enough to work there) Bath & Body (why you have to be 18 to work there is beyond me) and some of the smaller shops. SHe doesn't "want" to work at the grocery stores or Dairy Queen....the only places that WILL hire a 17 yr old.

I can't talk - I saw them more recently - on their last concert tour - about 9 years ago - they were peforming near my parents' house - so, I flew up, dragged two childhood friends and went - 6th row. I did the whole back stage door bit - and met them. And promptly broke down crying... Gotta love childhood friends - they never batted an eye- they were right there with me :thumbsup2

Now John, on the other hand, has gone with me and other girl friends to see Neil Diamond  I can tell we're now firmly settled in our marriage - even though I spared him the mortal embarrassment of Captain and Tennille, he's dragging his feet on going to Vegas because he knows I will see Barry and he refuses to go with me...

I'm wondering if the age is because she'll be required to close - and/or work solo? :confused3

Too bad she isn't closer - Maggie's dance studio lost two teachers at the end of the school year...

I had thought that it would be a no-go at the tanning salon because of the equipment. And Bath & Body was robbed last spring, so I think that's probably when they raised the age there.
Personally, I'd rather she didn't work at any kind of place that could be robbed.....although in all my years at the banks, I never once saw a robbery.

She'd love to teach....there just aren't enough hours at her studio to keep her in the kind of money she wants.

Yes, I know this story. Alicia was told by the server at our favorite New Mexican food place that she could easily get a job there because they needed help. Same wages, plus the servers share tips with the bussers. But Alicia doesn't want to touch dirty dishes, so she didn't apply. Well, she did develop some nice arm muscles pushing all those carts.

Monica, that is unusual. Most studios have a surplus of teachers, especially student teachers. Alicia went this morning to teach her jazz class, and it was cancelled for today. They need more students to sign up. Her studio is kind of struggling, though, they don't advertise much. Very sad, I hope they make it. She's very disappointed, she's really been looking forward to having her own class. She will probably wind up just being a sub this year, and I will have to pay tuition after all.

Maggie's studio is a medium sized studio and growing - she just took over another 1000' square foot store front - and added a third room, longer, - primarily for leaps and turns as well as creating smaller classes.

She lost a tap instructor and and an upper level ballet instructor... Tap instructors are hard to keep/find -

Unfortunately, Maggie's favorite class which is tap - may be canceled - the studio director/owner added a Tap III - Maggie's level as an in between before getting to intermediate, because there's mostly jr high/high school in intermediate and advanced. And, a big skill and speed jump in between II and intermediate. Unfortunately, there were only 5 girls in Maggie's Tap II class last year - and Maggie was the only one to sign up for III this year. We may go the private route, if they aren't able to switch , skill wise, some of the intermediate students into III, instead of leaving her in tap II...

Diana, that's the part I like best about Jordan teaching...I don't have to pay her tuition!
I hope it works out for Alicia. Our studio is really small, too. But since it's the only one up here, they get a lot of new students who haven't advanced to the point of needing to go to Phoenix. Does that make sense?

Stacey, my parents were like and wouldn't let us work in high school. Most kids my age had jobs at McDonald's and were up to all hours of the night. There was no way my parents were going to let us do that. I'm thankful for that today.

In college I landed a "sweet" job at my uncle's architectural firm as secretary. It was great, when he was busy with bids, I worked until all hours of the night typing. But when he was slow, I was able to do my homework & studying at the office. I pretty much set my own hours. If it was busy & I had exams, my aunt would cover for me.

Best of luck to all of those girls struggling with making the "right" choices. I'm not looking forward to those years! They'll be here before I know it!
