$40 for a 10yo at Boma? Seriously?

So, we snagged a discounted room at AKL under the winter promotion, and couldn't be more thrilled, as DW has wanted to stay here since... I dunno... FOREVER. So that part is all good.

We usually like to eat a TS dinner on the last day at our resort so we can pack and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Since I've heard lots of good things about Boma, and booked an ADR before I looked at the menu. It's $40/adult which is a bit high compared to other buffets, but whatever. Then it hit me we have a 10yo son, who is going to be $40 for dinner. I'm still in shock. It's not like we've never been to a Disney Buffet, so this isn't first-time sticker shock. It just seems to me that there's no way a 10yo kid can eat enough to justify that much. It's not even like there are Characters roaming around to make up for the high cost.

We generally go out of pocket for meals since kiddo is a bit picky, and may not want to order off the kids menu all the time. So we are a used to adult meal prices for him on occasion. But now I'm ready to give up all buffets until kiddo is older... Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes. Seriously. The cutoff is 9 years old. Older than that and you pay the adult price at fixed price restaurants, no matter how much you eat. Kids 10 and over also pay adult prices for the dining plan.

If Jiko is too much for you price-wise, try Sanaa at Kidani Village - an a la carte restaurant.

I feel the same way. Because I'm a vegan, my options are limited, at Boma I will probably only get salad and fruit, rice dishes and some tofu dishes [maybe a sorbet]. There's no way I should have to pay $40 for these foods...

Boma has a lot of options for vegans. Make sure you ask to speak to the chef.

Heck, I remember when rooms at the Comtemporary going for a "staggering " $55.00 per night!!

LOL! We have the free dining plan and I am still struggling with this ADR! Partly because I dislike buffets in general and partly because ds10 will probably eat nuggets! I would rather he use a credit towards a steak dinner or just get a kids meal OOP! I still have a months to decide....

It really comes down to "if people are willing to pay...they will charge it". It seems as though many people enjoy the buffets at Disney regardless of the cost.

We absolutely LOVE Boma. It is probably the one buffet we have missed enjoying on our trip last year. But now that the kids are 10,11, and 11, won"t be able to go anytime soon.

We are in the same boat. Staying at AKL and really looking forward to is. But my 11 y/o is a selective eater and there is no way I am going to pay $40 for her buffet, so this trip we won't be eating table service at AKL. Luckily, I managed to get a car rental for a "steal" so we are planning to eat at some of the restaurants (gasp) off-site on the Irlo Bronson highway. You can find almost all the chain restaurants on that road. There is also a great Publix and a Super Target for a grocery run. I do love AKL, but find the dining not to be a great value for those kids that are "tweens".

Boma's has a lot of vegan foods and a huge selection of foods and have been there about 4 times and no way have tried everything yet. a 10 year old should be on adult menus if ala carte dining. Kona's grill in the Poly is very good and is all alacarte as well as Sanna's in AKL...

The past few times we ate there we actually put her in the kids club at $12 an hr. She spent time with kids and we could order her dinner as part of the club. So she ended up eating Mac N Cheese and grapes and we were able to eat without tag teaming her to make trips to the buffet.

While this will not work for a 10yo, I would talk about how exciting it will be to stay at the AKL and how you could spend the $$ doing other things.

Thanks for mentioning Irlo Bronson Hwy. We also rent a car, and like to go to off-site places just to save some $$$. We'll head over that way during our Nov. trip...but I'll still miss a visit to Boma!!

Yep, I agree that $40 is too much to pay for a ten year old. I have a ten year old, and I know she could never eat that much in food. For that matter, I can't eat that much in food. I wonder if it has to do with the types of food and meats that they offer. It is a great place to eat though I have to say!

Questions of worth aside, as a note, the price on AllEars includes the seasonal upcharge. I was there just last week and the adult cost, including tax, was closer to $35, or $32.99 before tax. Not much of an improvement, but still. (It's one thing I HATE about the AllEars menus...).

I feel your pain. We are going to do only one character buffet on our trip. It will be over $100 for our family. We are just looking at it as our one splurge on our vacation.
