4/21/20 podcast

Wow, I must be reading the wrong threads. My general sense from the boards is everybody (or the most vocal) is convinced Disney can't possibly open this summer. So I find the podcasters' optimism refreshing. I wouldn't be shocked if we had to wait until 2021, but I don't want to resign myself to that thinking.

I spend much of my time in the News and Rumor forum and the general sense there is taht Disney will open "in some form" this summer or by Sept at the latest. Everything from insiders and stuff is reporting they are looking at different phases of opening but that the thinking is relatively soon for the first phase

I think that it isn't crazy to suggest DIsney won't be fully open or back to full operations until 2021, but the majority of posts and reports and opinions I see think there will be at least some guests in at least some parks this summer for sure

One thing I don’t think has been talked about much is how people will handle being around large crowds again.

A photo of a huge crowd at a event was shared in another thread and someone remarked, “that gives me anxiety just to look at.” I think that’s valid!

We haven’t been hugging anyone but immediate family. We aren’t shaking hands or in personal space of strangers.

The longer this goes on, I think especially for kids, being in a crowded space will feel very unsettling and unnatural.

If things go back once there is a vaccine/treatment I think we will have a huge adjustment to keeping our calm, not getting anxious on crowded buses, theaters, etc. Even the thought of navigating a full Southwest plane, makes my heart race a little. It’s interesting to think about.

Agree! i was never anxious about the germ or hygiene aspect of physical closeness in a crowd before, but BOY am I now! I can DEFINITELY identify with just seeing a picture of people too close together makes that adrenaline feeling hit my chest now!! And I've been a hugger for many years (I've said so here, many times) and I think, extremely sadly for me, those days are - if not long gone - a LONG ways away! :(

I think we need to think of it as we will never "go back to normal" but rather, we will "move forward to a new normal". Things will be different now. Think how plan travel changed after 9/11 and hasn't changed back. And I know lots of people that after 9/11 will never work at the top of a skyscraper.

I can definitely see at least some people just never shaking hands ever going forward, for example

Good thread.

I probably sound selfish here, but my biggest concern at this point is Disney actually opening, implementing any type of new process and restrictions and not allowing us to rebook a trip for next year. What I mean is, we have a two week trip planned for this August that we booked on a free dining bounce back last August. I don't want to have to go, paying basically full price for hotel and tickets, and not have our normal 100% Disney experience. I also don't want to cancel and lose the current pricing we have. I'm actually hoping they remain closed, or, offer the option to re-book at a later date with the same package even if they DO open for the summer.

I know in China they are using a QR code system that indicates if your health is green, yellow, or red and access to places is based on your coding

No idea if that could work in the U.S. - people might push back on invation of privacy and having to share medical information. Also, how does one get their QR code? Would everyone have the same level of access to getting one?
can anyone linke the podcast here or ? THANK YOU

I do think what gets charged or what tickets are required or eligible for any sort of phased opening is another interesting topic. Like for people with APs who just had their extended, if the parks open with just MK, no parades, no fireworks, and minimal dining, does that "start the clock" on their APs or will sepearate tickets be required during these phases and "regular" tickets are not valid until full operation?

Hi Tom: Did you watch the podcast? Pete mentioned it on there. I think it went something like this: People are checked out healthwise and give a stamp of (just an example) G3 and their stamp is checked at the gate/store/etc. If it is the one classified as no admittance due to health concerns (that they have), then they are denied service. I think I stated this poorly. Just watch the podcast. I have read of this elsewhere. Maybe that is the way they have to do it in their culture, I don't know, but I (and just me) think it wouldn't work in the US. Just my opinion.
Yeah that’s Shanghai. They are using a qr system not Japan. I had no idea what you were talking about when you mentioned tattoos.

I've been wondering about that too. I am sure they know exactly where their break even point is, but if they limit attendance and implement too many restrictions it will might drive attendance down to non-profitable levels. People are already going to be worried about going in the first place. I wonder if people not wanting to travel combined with additional restrictions will leave them operating at a loss still.

I still don’t understand why Pete is so hard on ABD. I agree, they haven’t been great but aren’t they way ahead of cruise line on cancellations currently???

Why he keeps calling DCL wonderful but wanting to unseat ABD leadership doesn’t make any sense to me. There isn’t that much daylight between their reactions. It just seems Disney is taking their time on all fronts but eventually making guests whole.
There are some interesting threads in the Adventures by Disney part of this site. I can see why he was somewhat tough on them. They had guests who flew to destinations only to have their tour canceled upon arrival because ABD dawdled on canceling even though it was pretty clear the tours wouldn't/shouldn't happen. I was glad he spoke up. It makes me more likely to book with Dreams.

I have heard bits and pieces and will go read more. :) I agree ABD has had very serious missteps. I guess the part that baffles me is DCL has a Fantasy cruise set for May 23rd. DCL needs to call some of their cruises. They need to stop being so far behind every other cruise line.
So I guess it’s not that I disagree with Pete on ABD, what I don’t understand why he is praising DCL or feels DCL has been significantly better than ABD
Does anyone think the Fantasy is sailing in 30 days?? I don’t.

I thought it was a great show.

I'm really curious what Disney will be like when it reopens.

Hi everyone... I am seeing some political posts in this thread. Please remember that there are no political comments/discussions allowed on the Disboards. There is a good post on it on the Community Board, and it's also in our guidelines. I'm going to clean up the thread, but please remember not to engage in political discussions.

For the sake of this discussion, let's just take the virus, masks, temp checks and all of the other medical issues out of the equation. Logistics for re-opening are going to be a bit absurd.

Limited park capacity. Limited resort occupancy. Social distancing everywhere. Limited transportation. Limited dining options.

Just think of all the queues for park entrances, food, merch, buses, attractions, etc. 6 feet for everyone to be safe. I can realistically conjure up images in my mind of a theme park visit becoming an entire day of standing in lines. I just can't envision the flow of foot traffic in the parks.

The extra hassle, stress and paranoia doesn't make a WDW vacation an attractive proposition.

I've been thinking that all along. Part of me thinks it's going to be awhile til any parks open not just Disney. Theme parks in general don't work well in a physical distancing world.

A theme park visit is a day standing in lines. But now you don’t have to smell the people around you.

Actually you can, but the issue is that many Americans don't care. Many don't understand that we are only as strong as the weakest link. America is just too selfish to conquer this virus. Look at the people carrying rifles and "protesting". They are legit protesting because they don't want to save humanity? Think about the train of thought that must come from. Look at the crowd protesting? Do you think they care about the fact that black women are at the highest rate to die from this? That our elderly are possibly going to lose care when it becomes time to choose whose worth saving? There is a reason other countries have been successful, they are lead by intelligent and empathic people and therefore they are doing what is right. We sadly are not. Our medical system isn't built to help the poor, we were always going to fail at this. We simply lack a culture of caring and love for all.

100% correct.

LOL< sorry about that. I thought it was Japan, because Pete mentioned it on the podcast??? Now I'm doubting myself but you get the gist of it. I think the idea of it is scary and just wouldn't work in the US, that's all. Thanks for clarifying that.:)
