OK. I'm having trouble with my sons third grade howework. Question is "How can you combine a trapzoid and a triangle pattern block to make a new shape with 6 sides?

Imagine the trapezium, so that it's longest sides are on the top and bottom. Sit the triangle above the top of the trapezium so that one corner meets the corner of the trapezium (but the other corner doesn't). You now have six sides - the left, right and bottom of the trapezium, the two sides of the triangle, and the remaining top length of the trapezium.

It seems like you would have to put it underneath the base to make a hexagon with one point inverted. Anywhere else, you would be making a larger triangle or parallelogram.

I would help him cut out a both shapes and then manipulate them to make a six-sided figure. Sometimes it's easier to see these things when you can handle them vs drawing them or trying to figure it out just with your eyes.

Don't know if this is what the teacher wants, but if you put the triangle at one end of the longer end of the trapezoid, you'll get a shape with 6 sides. In other words, turn the trapezoid upside down with the longer end on top and put the triangle at one end of the top. Hope you can figure out what I mean! LOL.

Thank you all. With your input the homework is done. I just can't believe this is 3rd grade math.
Thank you again!

My daughter did that this year in 2nd grade. We made paper shapes and put them together to answer her homework questions.
