???

That's terrible! How could they even say that?

Is that before taxes?

This is ridiculous! People on welfare make more than that and get more than that!

I know nothing about this type of thing but have to ask--Is this how we treat our veterans?

Buckalew, it's totally shameful how our vets are treated. Like another poster said, people on welfare are treated much better.

Is there someone in your town that is a VA rep? We have a guy that comes to our town once a week and helps the vets and their families with any problems they might have. Sometimes they can make things happen.. My dad was a disabled vet and this guy really did all he could for him.

Doesn't your job offer insurance for your spouse for a fee? Would that be worthwhile?

This thread makes me so sick.

How dare we treat our veterans like this??? I'm sorry...I am furious. To sit in front of the TV and watch those men and women fight like hell for our country & then think that these older men and women fought for our freedom or were willing to if needed, and we are treating them this way. I am spitting mad.

How, in the name of God, can we do our people this way?

My DH is uninsurable as he is terminally ill with cancer - as well as suffering from other serious health issues.. There isn't an insurance company on this face of this earth that would insure him and that's how we ended up at the VA.. :(

It is disgusting the way we treat our vets. I can't believe they're putting you through this, C. Ann. It's truly sickening.

It's not just the VETS that are being treated this way....just think of all the Medicare patients who don't have any other type of retirement benefit. My mom is one of them. She gets about $6000 annually & was expected to live on that! Mind you, she had no prescription coverage either. Nor dental. Well, she had to move in with my family & I because how can someone live on that annual "salary?" My mom always made minimum wage sewing in sweat shops & there were no retirement bennies at places like those.

Well, a few months ago was diagnosed with cancer & her one cancer med cost her over $100 per month, not to mention all the doctor bills that she still owed 20% on & she was only getting $450 per month! How was she supposed to eat? I got her on Medicaid & now she gets her entire Medicare check (without the health insurance part deducted) & Medicaid pays for her meds ~ all but $1 per med that is.

It's shameful how senior citizens in general are treated in this country, especially the VETS! I don't know what my mom would do without me.

But then again, we could be in China where our seniors would get NOTHING.

C. Ann ~ can you qualify for Medicaid in your State? There are quite a few hoops you have to jump through but for my mom, it was easy as pie since she didn't have anything in the bank. You are allowed to have a home & vehicle but not much more. It wouldn't hurt to check into it. We never even thought about it until my mom fell ill. Come to find out, she would have qualified LONG ago for it.

My sincerest wishes for everything to work out for you. May God Bless you & your DH.

I am sorry you are going through this. I have no words of wisdom, but prayers that you will find a way through this.

I really don't understand. My friend and her husband are getting all their medical care through VA. Up until a very little while ago both were working full time at well paying jobs. She dropped her health insurance at our firm because she was getting such good care FREE at the VA. He is still working full time. Her husband is also on portable oxygyn. Something is very wrong somewhere. I know you have nothing better to do than spend hours checking into this (LOL) but it's just plain wrong.

Have they reapplied for their yearly "means" testing?

First,I want to say prayers are being said for you right now.Second, not to be nosy but have you looked into home hospice?Once in the program all meds related to condition are covered, along with all medical equipment and supplies including O2.Just a thought.

I have no answers but something is wrong when the richest nation on earth cannot provide health care to all its citizens.

I hope you find some way to deal with this. And I am so sorry to hear about your DH's condition.

{{{hugs}}}

We are in a sorry state as far as medical insurance goes. My mom "qualified" for medicaid, as she is retired and has only social security income left. My sister offered to pay for insurance for her, but noone will insure her. (She has fibromialgia and high blood pressure!) So she did the paper work because we knew she was qualified. Well guess what. The state of Arizona told her she is qualified, but they are out of money, so she is on a waiting list. She detached a retina and had to have surgery to try to save her eyesight, so she had to put it on a credit card. Then she had to have another one and put it on another credit card. So, now she can't pay the credit cards. Eventually, she'll just have to file bankruptcy. So, what's the choice here? Go blind or file for bankruptcy! (And most older folks think that is something very shameful to not pay your bills, even though you can't.) This is how we treat people who worked all their lives. And I think it stinks! We don't take care of our elderly folks, and we don't take care of our veterans!
