???

It is shameful how we treat our veterans and our senior citizens. I have news for you guys....it is only going to get worse. Just think those VA benefits are BEFORE the few billion that they are currently looking to lop off the budget for veterans benefits. After all we have a war and generous tax cuts to pay for. Something has to give right?

I'm really sorry that you have been put in such a financial bind C.Ann. Perhaps you can find a good attorney that can help you to get the benefits that you need.

Keep in mind they are not always "older." My hubby is a disabled vet--70% disabled according to the VA. He is 34 years old and has to live the rest of his hopefully long life with this kind of stuff.

Just out of curiosity did DH retire from the military? and is his illness due to being in the military?

C. Ann, if you sign him up under your insurance during an open enrollment period there shouldn't be any questions to answer. I have never had to fill out a medical form during an open enrollment period.Actually it would probably be a good idea to have other insurance besides the VA insurance since it doesn't cover everything he may need.

This makes me so angry and sick. You worry all your life to raise a family or just survive , fight for our country so we can all enjoy freedom but the government expect us to survive on minimum wage that's ridiculous ( who can live on $5.50 an hour? if that's what it is now ), pay outrageous amounts for insurance and medical care.
C.Ann I'm very sorry that you have to go through this , this is definitelely not the way to treat anyone , specially our vets. If I may remember correctly , my MIL who was also on the oxygen concentrator , did have Medicare in NY state ( I believe you are there ) and it was covered.
Please inquire about medicare for your dh if you haven't done it yet, what do you have to loose?
This country has a HUGE problem when it comes to medical care and social security issues.
:(

If you were address your questions to me:

He is medically retired from the military. He holds his blue retirees ID card. The kids and I have our dependent ID cards. We have all of the benefits of a 20year retiree.

Yes, his illness is due to being in the service of his country.

Sorry Spirit Feather the question was for the original poster ( C. Ann).

No - my DH is not a retired, disabled veteran.. He is a veteran of the Korean War..

Miss Jasmine: The health insurance from my employer not only has a "pre-exisiting" condition clause, but can also deny him coverage (due to his cancer) because he hasn't been enrolled in a traditional health plan (the VA doesn't count) in 3 years now..

He DID have a supplementary policy (he's a senior citizen on Medicare) prior to our going to the VA, but when the company instituted a yearly MAXIMUM of $500 worth of prescriptions per YEAR we had to go to the VA because by that point his medications (not even including oxygen) were over $1000 a month! He has since had several others added on and it seems that no matter which way we turn, we hit a brick wall..

C Ann, I really feel for you & your husband. This is so unfair, & all too common as I am finding out. We had to put my 66 yr old dad in a nursing home last week. A man there had to actually divorce his wife for medicaid reasons. My dad is not on medicaid yet, so I don't know the details. But I do know this couple who'd been married for 40 years felt this was the only way to survive financially thru the husbands illness. So sad.
