DD#1 started volleyball tryouts today--there are 32 girls going for 15 spots!
There are some girls DD#1 thinks don't have a chance, and of course some girls who have played CYO or J.O. volleyball already--the coach even asked that no one wear any shirt that mentions volleyball so everyone gets the same chance (but then the girls with experience had fancy volleyball kneepads, while DD#1 only has her hip-hop kneepads and some of the girls have no kneepads at all).
DD#1 has done a 1 week volleyball camp each summer for 3 years and thinks she is competitive with the average girls, after the top tier of girls is already on. I think it could go either way. I saw girls who I know have done travel soccer (DD only did house soccer) or softball and are skilled in all athletics. DD did well at soccer but not softball or basketball, although she has 9 years of dancing that have her in great shape.
I wouldn't presume to ask for prayer for something like volleyball tryouts, but if you want to throw Kelly some pixie dust this week she and I would appreciate it!

PS--if she doesn't make it she wants to play CYO, and her little friend said "just say you go to St. Rose"--as if I would approve of any lie, let alone to play in a church league!

My DD ran CYO track because it was the only league in town, but she is not allowed to participate in the finals. She did get a special trophy for Most Improved Novice. She also learned the Hail Mary and to cross herself in church whenever she hears "In the name......."

Just wanted to wish you and your DD Good Luck. Both my daughters are out of high school now (they're 22 and 26) but I remember those stressful days of competitions and tryouts, all too well. Cheerleading, volleyball, track, dance courts, NHS, class officer and student council elections all seemed so important and life-changing at the time. It's so difficult to stand by and watch and worry. Thakfully, our kids are more resilent and adaptable than we are and seem to be able to cope better than the frazzled moms and dads most times.

Hoping there are nothing but happy days ahead for your and your family.;)

Good luck to her. Middle school, right? I really think our middle school sports programs are all wrong. Middle schoolers are supposed to be able to explore lots of things. I think schools should offer as many teams as necessary to accomodate all the kids interested and willing to practice.

BTW, when my son tried out for basketball in 7th grade it was around 70 kids and 10 spots. He was an excellent player but short and he wasn't the one short kid kept. The coach told him he was one of the last kids cut, which really didn't help at all. The next year about 50 kids put themselves through it again -- again he was cut. It was actually better that a lot of kids were cut b/c most of his friends didn't make the team either. Fortunately, he made the track team in the spring, so he got to do a sport.

Ironically, at least here anyway, it is actually easier to make a high school team of some kind b/c there are so many spots available.

My daughter is going through the same thing. Tryouts are every day this week from 8:00-12:00. It's very stressful because she is a sophomore this year and apparantly the freshmen coming in are terrific! They have no qualms about putting freshmen on the sophomore team if they are good enough. I really hope she makes it, but if she doesn't that's ok too. She already skates competitively and that takes up a lot of time as well. She also got her varsity letter in track as a freshman, so at least she'll always have track too. I know she'll be crushed though.

Good luck to your daughter! Let us know how it all turns out.

watching your kids go through tryouts is always gut wrenching.

My kid's school is small enough that they seldom cut anybody from a team. I talked my oldest DS into trying out for soccer this year, he hasn't played since he was about 5 or 6 years old so it should be really interesting. :p He is pretty athletic though so I think he'll be ok.

Practice yesterday was pretty hard on him -- they started with a 2 mile run.

Good Luck to your daughter. :)

Good luck to her! I played volleyball in HS and think it's a great sport...requires athletics, finesse, and brains.
