3 Days Better Than No Days?

DH & I have a trip planned for August without DS (he's going on a fishing trip). It was supposed to be for 9 days. We've sort of fallen into my MIL's home for very little money. To the point I'd have a better property in a nicer area w/ lower taxes. My mortgage would be 1/3 of what it is now. The downside is the house does need some updating. Ironically MIL updated all the mechanics (right down to a new foundation 5 years ago), but she never updated the interior. So the house is a bit 70's in look. Anyhow, we need to update and we'll have 2 mortgages for a few months.

We've been 5 times in the last 2 years. So, we were thinking of just cancelling our trip. Because that would be several thousand to sink in right there. Now we're thinking of flying out first thing Friday and coming home on Monday. It's a 3.5 hr flight w/ the layover included. It would be just me and DH so we'd be able to pack light on top of it. This would be our 6th trip in the last 2.5 years and we are currently planning a trip in February or March (waiting for the school calender) of this coming spring. So, is it worth it to only have 1/2 day Friday, and then 2 full days in the parks??? I really would love the fix, but I'm afraid it's a lot of work for such a short time. I can do this for about 1/4 of what the trip was going to cost and I have a bunch left for the improvements.. Then we get the best of both worlds. So has anyone done such short trips? We've gone 5 days- but never just 3.5 days.

Since you're even thinking about doing this, it sounds like you need that Disney fix! The getaway break will probably do you a lot of good. Then, you can get back to doing the interior updating with nice memories of your trip to help you get through all that work. If it won't hurt your budget badly, I think you should go. Besides, being able to spend some special time with your special hubby at a special place would be...well, very special!

We have gone DH and I without kids a few times - arriving late Friday night (after work) and leaving Sunday evening!! Go for it!

wow.....what a dilemma. i'm not even sure what to say. two mortgages, another trip planned in the winter, a better house at 1/3 the cost in a better neighborhood that you get to redesign on the interior and you're sweating a weekend trip. Can I have your life?

I'll take the other shoulder and whisper in your ear that "you've got higher priorities right now with the $$ and time than a short short trip to WDW". Don't get me wrong, I LOVE WDW and it sounds like you do too. It's just that if you are used to going for longer stretches of time, spending 2 days in the Parks is going to feel like a gip. Why not think of your home update as an adventure and have some fun at that It really is exciting to be able to update your interior as there's so much you can accomplish with paint and a few creative touches. I'll be honest, we're used to going 9-11 days and even a week would feel unacceptable to us, so we'd postpone if something came up that cut into that timeframe.
Please don't think of it as a "cancellation"; only an opportunity to do it up right next year when your world is more normal.

I've got to agree. Why not use the money that you would spend on the weekend at WDW on something memorable/useful/beautiful for your new home? You will have it to enjoy for much longer than a weekend. Plus, you've got your Disney fix coming up soon.

Have so much fun with the house. We renovated an 19th century farmhouse about ten years ago. The upstairs was just walls, no plumbing or electric. The downstairs was definitely early 70's decor. We took it down to the studs and designed and decorated the whole "new" house. I still miss it! (We are building in FL now, so I'm getting to do some of that stuff.) Redecorating a house is so much fun--enjoy it!
