:)

I went to college at BYU, and the Nutty Putty caves were a pretty popular place to go. I was invited to go on a group date there once and said, "Thanks, but no thanks." It was this narrow area that made me say "No". On the news here, the area the man died in was called Bob's Push, but if I am not mistaken, the nickname for it at school was "The Birth Canal" because it is sooooo small.

Such a sad story, and I wish peace for his family.

ETA: Turns out he wasn't in Bob's Push--still, so sad. Here's a link to the local news story. HTH.

Not that it matters=such a tragic loss but I can't seem to wrap my brain around how you end up stuck upside down in a crevice like that. I;m not a spelunker though.

What makes the situation even more sad is that the rescuers had gotten to him and were pulling him out, but then a pulley snapped, he slid back in and they couldn't get him out. I saw this on ABC news.com

The rescuers were right there with him. He was just stuck. It wasn't a case of the rescuers being separated by a wall they were trying to remove or not being able to find him.

He was a medical student, married with one baby and a second on the way. They had gone home to Utah for Thanksgiving to tell the family they were expecting again in June.

This gives me the heebie-jeebies since I have a touch of claustrophia. The poor guy!!!

My husband works for a tv station here in Utah, and he was on the scene for the entire story. It was a terrible tragedy. But what makes it even worse is that it didn't need to happen. 5 years ago, something similar happened at the same spot in the cave (although it was resolved happily then). At that point, officials wanted to close the cave, but a local spelunking group opposed the idea, and they won. After that, it was supposed to be kept closed with a lock and key. It was never very successful, though.

The decision was made yesterday, not to get him out of the cave. They are going to seal it up and make it a memorial.

It's such a terrible tragedy!

that article states that the most likely Cause of Death was suffocation...because the lungs simply cannot work very well with the weight of all of the other intestines/internal parts sitting on top of them. Also, the blood pooling around the brain can cause major damage.

And he was a med student. He likely knew that.

How horribly terrifying, and so sad. i feel so awful for his wife & kids. :sad1:

I second this, for the life of me I can not figure out how in the world he was stuck in such a position??? How horrible, have you seen pictures of how tight these spaces were, I can't imagine anyone finding it fun to be belly down in one of these hole spaces.

According to my husband (who has been down in parts of the cave), there are areas where you can get through easily, and parts where you have to "army crawl" to get through. The area he was stuck in, was one of those spaces. The irony is that just few more feet and he would have been in a very large space.

This has been a cave that is very popular with Boy Scout troops in northern Utah. In fact, this man probably went with his scout troop when he was younger. It's just sad that no one in his party remembered that parts of a man's body get larger as they get older.

It makes me ill thinking I went thru a belly crawl area of a cave a couple of months ago. That was the only area I actually turned around initially. I was in there about 6 hours and honestly hated about every minute of it. A spelunker I am not.

What a tragic story.:sad1: His poor family. I hadn't heard of this before but it breaks my heart for his family... especially his wife, pregnant with a second child...:guilty:

I have watched programs on caving and can't for the life of me understand why people would voluntarily go down small holes that they could get stuck in. I think the caving phenomenon has grown in leaps and bounds, but is basically dangerous. Slipping on guano and cracking your head open, for one.

I, like PlanoGirl, is getting the major heebie jeebies reading all these posts. I can't even imagine. Ugh. :scared:

That poor man and his family left behind. So tragic. :sad1:

How sad. I get anxiety grabbing stuff from under my bead.

How sad...thinking of his family, wife and babies.:sad1:

This is horrible and so sad!! :( I will definitely be praying for this man's family. I am moving out that way next year to go to college at BYUI... I'll make a mental note not to venture into this area.
