2017 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend

Don't forget about those Active.com fees!!

Yeah, I was looking at the travel provider link (which seems to include Active.com fees?) My plan is to have at least $230 hanging around - and since I've got a little extra from my cat's vet visit being less than expected (yay) probably more like $250. Hopefully that will do it!

I am training really hard for this, and I guess I just wanted a couple of other opinions. I know this isn't the race I'm going to PR in, and I'm not a heavyset person, but I hate all of that negativity!

I would think most people tend to train for this - I mean, I'm sure there are those who are just there for the *medal. But I'm looking at this as a milestone for myself more than anything. And at the end of the day, it's your race. I think the best thing to do is get as good of a time as you can to have better corral placement if possible, then enjoy the race you've put so much hard work into :) At least that's my plan!

I can tell you I paid 335.00 thru Raw THreads club for GSC and 80.00 for 5k and based on other races it's about 10.00 higher than race direct thru Disney/active

I've never pre-ordered pins before. Are they usually the "medal" pins, or the logo pins?

They are logo pins, I've always had to buy my mini medal pins at expo.

I absolutely do, as do a lot of other people. Like we've been talking about over there, yes...these things happen. There are people out there that are rude and only cross the start line to collect a medal. This does not represent the whole experience though. I've done it 3 years, and will do it every year if I can afford it. I have yet to have a negative experience.

I truly train and plan to give my heart out to earn my bling but I'm slow, anemic and fat.

So is anyone doing training and actually planning on RUNNING these events?

That feels like an odd question.

Does it change anything for you if I tell you I run/walk? Except my running is more like a jog?

What if I told you that from WDW marathon weekends '14 to '15 I participated in 6 Halfs, my training slacked off between each one worse and worse, and my times got worse and worse (after an uptick for the second one)? I got massively sick before the WDW '14 Half, am not sure how I started, let alone finished. I had no plan for getting back into training, and was still very sick for over a month after I got home (and our trip was 4 weeks long). Which caused my St Patrick's Day Half that year to be a bit painful (though I was better than the "sick.0" half). And it got worse. I had thought that I would join Half Fanatics b/c of one of the small and close-together series that year, but then I realized I HATED the distance LOL. (I've pulled back from that feeling a bit) (thank you RnR Vancouver)

Does knowing that I wasn't as serious as others cause a problem? I wasn't doing them for a medal, though I do want the medal if I do them. I like the bibs, I like the shirts, I like the medals. I don't really do events that don't have at least a shirt or medal; what's the point of paying money for a run if you're not getting something like that? Training doesn't generally involve medals (unless you want to do virtual events, which I sometimes do, though just recently it took a Half and some other long distance AND 5 hours of helping to cut down ivy at our new house until I let myself give myself the Umbridge "13K or until it sinks in" medal from Hogwarts Running Club). But to PAY money for an event? gimme something other than the joy of having done it. (because for me there is very little joy in running alongside my 10,000 new closest buddies) I like, in general, Rock&Roll because of their awesome medals and relatively low costs. I've never considered going to Vegas until I got an email about RnR Vegas yesterday and saw the cooooool medals. I did Seattle Half, I'm doing Vancouver 10K and Half...at the end of all that I'll have the Seattle Half, Vancouver 10K, Vancouver Half, "remix" for doing the two in Vancouver, a Pacific medal for doing the two Pacific NW events, AND a World Rocker medal. Holy moly. Thank you RnR. And yet all my medals are in boxes, just sitting there, waiting for someday.

I've heard some horror stories (from the running thread) about the 10k where people just walk a mile or two and then stand to the side and wait for the bus to sweet them.

So I'm a little at a loss, since I don't always participate in that thread, because I don't know what the "horror" part of that story is. I'm trying to skim back to see what you're reading and where you're coming from, but unless the bus ran those ladies over I see no "horror". What they do in their lives doesn't change your life at all. Saying they finished doesn't change your experience.

OK, found it. I, too, started in Corral C for the 10K (the corral with no fireworks). And I guarantee that I'm slower than the poster who talked about it (and that poster is one of my faves here). So you would think that I would have seen that same thing; I'm not SO much slower that the bus-coming-in-an-hour would have already been by. But I didn't. So that's odd.

But I also just don't care about that stuff. I remember worrying about a young woman who was walking "backwards" at the WDW Half '15, looking for her special needs sister who had gotten separated from her. I remember worrying about the man who had fallen in the first 100 yards of Star Wars 10K this year and must have broken his nose, and later as we were in the ART/shuttle area a woman hit the ground HARD just as the path opened up again. I'm pretty sure someone bit it very soon after crossing the start line in my corral at Princess 10K. And there was another woman bleeding on the ground at Princess, but she already had help around her. I worry about that stuff. I don't worry about if people are waiting for a bus or why they are waiting and not walking. I don't know their stories. Maybe they were all in cotton socks and they'd all stepped in puddles and they were already blistering. Maybe they all came from an orthopedic clinic for some sort of fibularis injury, and while some of their group was still ok they were not. Who knows? I don't care. Doesn't change my world.

Apparently ladies were making fun of ladies who were heavy set ("fat") for running

The same ladies that were waiting to be picked up? Ladies in the running thread? Other ladies? Making fun of heavier (or thinner, or medium) people isn't very nice.

OK, obviously I found it. Different ladies talking about a different lady. Glad I have earbuds in when I run.

the expo was black friday style for all of the merchandise (fighting, etc)

That was true. Absolutely. Well, at least, during parts of it. It wasn't ALL like that. The part where there was a man carrying two cases, and pushing along another with his foot, of the coveted wine glasses, to buy them all in the first hour or so of the expo was true (heard it from many sources). That's not a pretty part of the expo at all. As I waited behind two women looking at some merchandise, to not be rude and reach through to get a shirt I wanted, a woman *behind me* reached through and grabbed the shirt I was waiting for. Sigh.

I hate all of that negativity!

Which negativity? The negativity of not training? The negativity of people commenting on the training schedules of others? Those making fun of sizes? Having physical fights over shirts? Those talking about the fights over shirts?

Unless someone wants to get into the conversation with you, or you get punched while walking through the expo, none of it has to affect you.

Honestly, the MOST negativity I found in the runup to this year's princess was on FB and it was from the "serious" runners. They were just nasty IMO. I got really really tired of their nonsense. Their oh-so-helpful advice that would have been good 6 months prior. NOT 3 weeks out. 3 weeks out it was useless. Try giving people the info throughout the year, ladies. Basically telling those whose training had gone awry in some way that there was no point. Not believing that those people had ever *wanted* to do all the training. etc

I don't like people questioning the motives of those who wait for the bus any more than I like people making fun of a too heavy or a too thin woman on the course.

d-in-the-T, you already are estimating an hour for the 10K. You're already faster than me. :)

No you can't submit POT for the 10K. That was all in your estimate of finish time. You're always going to have to weave unless you're up in the elite corral. And with princess you're going to have to deal with fast, tall, elbows-at-face-level men who started behind you and are now trying to get going. Those guys that I saw had ZERO etiquette (and sometimes they were dealing with 3 groups of 3 women all across the road, having NO idea what a blockade they were making, but not always), but they were obviously seasoned runners. At TOT '13 a fit, seasoned-looking runner passed me on my right, when there was literally NO road on my right and tons of road on my left, as we went through the pathway to WWoS. I was hugging the right in order to walk, because I couldn't see in there, I thought I was doing the right thing, but this seasoned runner blew right past me from the woods, basically.

Put in the time on your feet. Work out your nutrition pre-during (if you need it)-post-run. Try to not get injured and really try to not get sick 2 days after your plane lands. (ugh) Focus on you.

We discuss All The Things here because it's a discussion board. Remember that there are people here who did Princess FistFight and who have signed up again. Heck, I don't even want to do Princess, but my cousin did, and now it's a cousin thing. We came back for a reason! And it's not just so we can see more police officers at the expo. :) Remember all of that whenever the discussions of ebay buyers and the sag wagon come up.

^^^ First of all woah! good on you for having the time to respond to all of that!!

and also for not letting everyone bring you down. It did however answer my question of the type of race this will be. That's all I really wanted to know...

I'm the type of person who hates color runs and those sort of thing because (almost) everyone comes in with the mindset that they are walking. I had an absolute miserable time at one of those events because people shout "why are you running?!?" at me as I run by.

And yes, it makes it a really negative experience for me. When I run races, those around me also help me to bring me to my finish and goals. I'm never going to be the first person finishing.

As a really competitive person, I always have a hard time understanding why people don't try their best....and it makes me angry, (and I know it shouldn't,but I can't help it) but that's a personal issue (which is why, again, I was asking if the norm of this race is people just walking a mile and then waiting for a bus). I realize that there will be people there trying their absolute best and they will be walking it. That's fine. One of my good friends is going to be one of those people! But I'm just happy I can mentally prepare (know) about these bus people! I'm also glad to hear from the previous people that they are just a few bad apples.

I'm sorry if my questions somehow upset you (you seemed upset up there!) I just generally want to make sure I know what I'm getting into. I've never done run Disney before!

As for feeling welcome in threads...this one is not one I feel so welcome in anymore.... Again, sorry to the people I offended! I am glad to hear there is just a few bad apples at the race. Makes me a lot happier going in.

I agree with @bumbershoot.
I do train and even if one is not trying to PR the event, it is much more fun when you don't have to worry about sweeper or not finishing. I suggest to train for a 10k, NOW, and run or walk it early in the fall so that you will have a time to submit for corral placement. Running earlier in the fall also gives you time to run/walk another event if you want to try and improve.
I PR'ed this race this year..in fact I ran my fist sub 2 hour half. At this point, having run it every year, I am just trying to make it to the 10th anniversary.

I wanted to join the RawThreads club and I may just do that if I can't get in - I already buy enough of their product and throwing $100 to join the club is cheaper than Charity Bib or a Travel Agent. I was curious about this - so thank you! :)

I got a little excited when I read that you may be going to Vegas! Did you decide to sign up and are you doing Avengers too? Hubs and I are doing Avengers 10K then boarding a plane to Vegas to do the 5K night run and the half the next day. The remix medal is black and looks badass. If not, I'll see you in Vancouver! My mother in law is doing her first 10K there and is really excited to earn the medal - so far there's not been one medal in the 8 races I've done so far this year through RNR that I've been disappointed in.

I just generally want to make sure I know what I'm getting into. I've never done run Disney before!

It may have been in this thread or another thread where it was mentioned but.... RunDisney is not a race series that you will PR in. It's time for fun runners to come together, maybe wear a silly costume, and enjoy their time running through the parks. You may be slightly annoyed with people randomly stopping in front of you to grab a selfie in front of the castle or parts of the race where you're at a literal dead stop for 2 minutes as people file through narrow areas. But I think if you go into knowing that you'll have fun but not a great finish time.. then you'll enjoy it and it's a great race for you. If that doesn't sound appealing you may be better off going to RNR.

Ugh - was she with her daughter that was 12 or so?? If it's the same gal you're talking about, I saw her fall and it was BRUTAL. She definitely broke her ankle (I'm pretty sure she was on the Princess FB group).

She definitely broke/tore/sprained something and couldn't finish. :(

Well then hopefully I've got enough - we've got a room through our DVC points and will be renewing APs so that isn't an issue. I'm just doing the Half, so don't need quite as much as for GSC, and I'm going to just register through Disney. But honestly, if I need a few dollars I'll pull it from my "fun money" and be fine :) I just really want to be prepared!

Just interjecting to say I love HRC! It's been great for me getting back into running :)

That's really unfortunate. Stuff happens! Sometimes you intend to do a bunch of training and it doesn't go as planned. I'm seriously wondering how I'm going to get in some longer runs during the holidays and all of our traveling, but that doesn't mean I don't totally plan to make it work. But telling people that they should just give up and not even try is depressing. I tend to agree with you in general - just don't let the other stuff bother you, run your own race, and have fun.

She definitely broke/tore/sprained something and couldn't finish. :(

So sad! That is really concerning - and selfishly I'm praying I'm not one of those people. That would just be devastating - though I'm really glad there were people around to help of course!

100-percent this!!

So is anyone doing training and actually planning on RUNNING these events?

Nah. I usually just roll out of bed with zero training whatsoever and will myself to get through it. Worked for Dopey!!! :sad2:

Hello, I've never entered a Disney race in the US before but as I am coming from the UK, I have booked my place through a travel provider so does this mean I can't pre-order a jacket? I really wanted one to commemorate my first Glass Slipper.

You should be able to pre-order through your Active.com account. It's possibly the option won't be there yet since regular registration hasn't begun.

If you log into your account and go to "My Events" there should be a "purchase additional merchandise"-type option.
Also how much does the jacket normally cost? Many thanks xxx
I can't recall for sure, but I want to say $80-$90? As always, don't forget those Active.com fees! :(

Thank you so much for this information, I will keep an eye on my Active.com account when my registration is complete. Wow those jackets are expensive, I hope they are worth it ;)

If you pick it up and don't like it, you can return it (you wouldn't get the Active.com fees back, though). :)

Here's the thing. You will see people from all different walks of life, experience levels, and abilities in these races. Yes, some people will be walking 100% of the way, some people will be running intervals, and some people will be super fast. That's the beauty of runDisney. Everyone is welcome. Your idea of "not trying" might not be the same as someone else's. As long as people show a little common courtesy, don't worry about what they're doing or saying. Run your own race, and let them run theirs, even if you don't personally like how they're doing it.

Yup. This. It is totally okay to get upset if someone stops in front of you with no warning, or whips out a selfie stick (which is not allowed) and nearly takes you out. Just don't let it affect you any more than it has to.

That's really unfortunate. Stuff happens! Sometimes you intend to do a bunch of training and it doesn't go as planned. Here's my feeling about this. I don't know specifically what is being referred to here, but I have been in similar online discussions about lack of training. I'm never going to tell someone not to even bother to go if you haven't trained. HOWEVER, what I am going to say is go into it with your eyes wide open, listen to your body, and don't do anything you'll regret later. Pixie dust will unfortunately not keep you from getting hurt. I have actually been on the other side of this where I have been attacked for being realistic. I want to encourage people, but I also want to tell them the truth from my own personal experience.

*applause*

100% agree.

THIS! It sums runDisney up so well.

I'll admit I've been frustrated at Disney races by people who aren't as serious as I am, but you have to step back and realize it doesn't effect you at all. If you love Disney, and you love running, you'll love a runDisney race. It'll never be perfect but it'll always be fun (unless it's Dark Side Half that was a miserable race for me :crazy2:)

Exactly. As long as they're not getting in the way and/or risking injury of myself and others, their experience is not my experience.
