2013 Destash- this is the year!

I haven't done much destashing for the last few weeks. Between the Robotics Club Competition that I chaperoned in California, the bad cold I caught on the plane (thanks to the lady who sat next to me hacking and sniffling her way across country for 4 hours!), and the big shipment of merchandise I had to pack up and ship out, I'm surprised I got a thing done.

I did go through alot of the books on the 2 shelves in my bedroom. I contacted one of my sisters in another state, gave her the list and she wanted a bunch of them so I packed them up today and sent them to her.
She had given away alot of the books she had at her resort for years and needed more to fill the gaps. The books sit on the shelves in the office for any of the guests to borrow. She was particularly excited about the Nora Roberts books. I think she wants to read those before putting them out for guests. LOL

The rest I just dropped at Goodwill this morning.

hello everyone,
this is my first post on this thread, but i have been following along for the past month or so. I wanted to thank everyone for their stories of success, because it really has given me the encouragement i needed to start cleaning my house. We have an office that we just use as a dumping ground for things, and I've also turned my kids playroom into a place to store boxes of my nan's stuff since she passed away last year. Things kept piling up and it became so intimidating to even start any cleaning projects that it just got worse and worse. This week as i was about to fall asleep in bed i heard a big crash from my closet. One of the rods had fallen off the wall and clothes everywhere. So, hubby put the rod back up and we decided it was time to get rid of clothes. We purged 3 full garbage bags. Then i decided to tackle the playroom. All the boxes except one have been put away, or are ready to give to charity. I've spent all morning shredding old documents and have filled a whole garbage bag full. DH got a big box of old office electronics ready to take to the recycling and we can now see the office floor! I'm so pleased with our progress that i've gotten the kick i needed to keep going.

So excited! I just went through the storage space we have on our balcony. So much junk gone! My mom is on vacation this weekend so I couldn't go as gung ho as I would've liked, but I'm still pretty satisfied. There are still 3 totes full of holiday decorations she hasn't put up since we've lived here (about 5 years now, yeesh!), but I know as soon as I toss them she'll go looking for them, plus they're all that's left of the mountains we used to have living in a house. On the bright side everything is now sorted, labeled, and neatly tucked back in. Before today, the door wouldn't even close! I got rid of an extra large tote, large printer box, guitar box, and big garbage bag worth of stuff (plus some in the donate pile). Of course though, I didn't find the thing I initially went in there looking for! Just my luck.

So I had an interesting weekend.
We gutted the master bedroom, got all new furniture. So out with the old and in with the new. It looks so much better and is clean (almost) and organized (almost) and looks huge!!
We got a double Pax wardrobe from Ikea and we are each taking 1/2 which means DH needs to scale down his wardrobe, a lot. I did mine a few weeks ago, he is doing his this weekend. We also gave DD the closest for her clothes so her 2 Stuva (Ikea) units are out of the room! YAY!!
No more piles on the floor! No more piles on the chair! No more off season clothing totes, everything will fit in the wardrobe.

Now to keep moving on the rest of the house. LOL

Does ds1 moving out count. We are happy that he and his gf could move into their first apartment. Along with him is all his clothes (he has more clothes than dh and I together), his bedroom set, the bookcases and futon from her house that they didn't need when her mother moved into an apartment in Nov (that have been in our front porch) and the dog and her crate is also going.

So, we ended up putting our house on the market and it sold in five days (heard we were getting an offer after only three days). So, we continue to get rid of stuff. I'm down to mostly the furniture we are keeping or still need, but I have to spend a lot of time organizing kids clothes, kids craft stuff, stuffed animals, mostly anything related to the kids. I sold or donated most of my baby gear.

Current problem is my in-laws (we are buying their house) are trying to leave quite a bit behind. We greatly appreciate certain things that we like and will use, but it's hard to say no to other things--like an eight seat dining room table with matching china cabinet that's quite huge, not really our style, but nicer than ours and comes with a lot of baggage. They are just dumping almost everything and starting new once their new house is built. I've gone back and forth, but I think I'm going to tell them to sell their set; I'm not a big hostess and it's quite fancy for me. Plus, I love our china cabinet, it's the first thing we bought as a couple.

They are also leaving their kitchen table, which we do want and love, their big screen HDTV, their family room furniture... It's great, but challenging to combine two houses into one and/or find new homes for certain furniture. Thankfully, we don't have tons ourselves.

Plus, I'm starting to realize how much I'm going to miss our house. But, I have to remember the reasons we are moving, including the school district.

You all have been doing great! Everyone has made so much progress!!!

We had an interesting past week. Our plan all along for this move was to have DH move before DS and I, and find us a place to live. He was going to be in a monthly rental, while hopefully finding us a rental home. Well, after a lot of going back and forth, we had a change of heart and decided it would be a bit easier if we just worked with a property manager to find us a home so we had a home to go to right when he got there, and then he could just work on furnishing it (since we're selling most of our furniture) before DS and I get there. We would kind of be taking a chance not seeing the actual house, but with pictures and video tours, we were able to find a wonderful home that we both really, really like and in the exact neighborhood we were hoping for. Long story short, the property manager is now completely jerking us around and dragging her feet. She keeps asking for more information and more documents and I just don't understand it. She verified with our current landlord that we pay rent on time, but then she wanted the cancelled checks showing we paid... And she verified my income with my employer and with my last paycheck stub, then she wanted the paycheck stubs for the last three months, plus my W2 from last year. We have great credit, no debt, and more than enough income. I don't know what the issue is, but we're beyond frustrated at this point in time. I don't even remember having to provide this much info when we bought our last home. It's just ridiculous and never ending. I feel like she doesn't want to rent to us, for whatever reason, and she's just looking for something so that she can deny the application...But now we're invested with our application money and our time....DH is ready to just walk away, but I just feel like we've given her everything she could possibly want at this point in time, so she's has to make a decision soon. So I promised DH that if we don't hear anything by the end of the day today, or if she comes back and asks for anything else, we're done. Sorry this is long, but I just really needed to vent about it. I'm just really stressed out and frustrated over the situation, and now it has me really stressed out that what if all property managers down there are like this and it's going to be much harder/longer to find a house than we anticipated.

Because of all of the drama above, I didn't get nearly as much de-cluttering and packing done as I wanted to this past week. I did manage to get most everything finally done in DSs room, and we packed up about half of his games and toys yesterday. He still has enough to play with until we move, but not so much that there will be a ton to pack. DH did a bit better than me. He helped me with DSs room, he boxed up all of his shoes that are going, and then de-cluttered his office and started to pack some stuff up. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks until DH moves, so I really need to get into gear with a plan of attack for getting anything and everything that can be packed up before he leaves packed up and ready to go, so I'm not doing it all alone after he's gone.

Well I just finished emptying the storage unit and turned in the key card for that so everything I needed to cancel this month has been cancelled. I brought home the safety deposit box stuff at week and cancelled our Y membership (very sad, we've been members there for about 7years).

I have the garage all packed up except for the tool storage thingy. But I'm going to give the storage thingy to the neighbors when we move so I'll just save a few boxes for the stuff in it. I just need to pull the remaining loose items (things like bubbles and bee spray) out of the corner of the garage and I can start walling the garage in with the boxes from the house. LOL

My bedroom is pretty packed up as is the living room. I still need to do a lot more work in the kitchen but I had run out of boxes and jut picked some up this afternoon so that's my project for tomorrow. I'm really not sure how much more I can stack in the garage so I'll have to start stacking things in odd's walkin closet. My closet is full of boxes already.

My mom is bringing bubble wrap and packing paper with her this weekend so I'll let her have at it with the remaining breakables.

My goals for this week is finishing getting all the loose items from the garage, pack up what I can from the kitchen, move all the boxes out of the way before Friday, pack up at least half of the kids toys and clean my whole house before my mom arrives Friday morning. It's all probably doable I just need the motivation!

Congrats on the quick sale! That must be such a relief.

Oh no! I wonder what's going on that she's not telling you. Hope it all works out for you! That would be so frustrating.

Wow, you have made a lot of progress! Way to go!

We kinda went backwards in progress - we had to move all of DD's things out of her dorm for the summer. Ugh. There are boxes literally covering her entire floor! I have no idea where all that stuff came from, how it fit into half a dorm suite, and how she is going to manage living in a 6 girl room next year! Yes, SIX girls in one room of the sorority house. :lmao: Luckily, she's an hour away so she can rotate out her stuff pretty easily.

The rest of my progress has stalled due to some basement flooding. We have been able to maintain the main level pretty well though I have a pile or two in the kitchen I need to address. That will be my goal this week.

We already met our goal for this year but I am still determined to get everything possible out. We still have two large items we are trying to sell. Then, I went through the cups again and got a few more things that I could let go of. I've found 5 items in the office and 3 more books. I already went through all this stuff but it seems going through it a second time makes me find even more stuff.

I feel almost addicted to it. Like I NEED to get rid of something still even though we've already done so much. Such a weird feeling.

please be cautious with this. i'd be concerned with all the information she is requesting. she now has enough 'stuff' that she could walk into any bank and say she is you with proof to back her up. do you know this person? was she referred by a close friend?
I don't mean to frighten you but I worked in a bank for 33 years and I have seen some nasty stuff happen. in fact, my son had identity theft and they racked up 25,000 before anyone caught on. big dollars! don't know how things work in the u.s. but in Canada they don't need THAT much info.
just, please, be careful.

Getting ready for the annual community garage sale in 2 weeks. I have gone through the movies, books, cd's, and the kids have brought me stuff they no longer want. I have also gotten through our closets. I need to tackle the kitchen tonight and the basement. I will also go through kids' room while they are playing outside to make sure I don't see anything else. Whatever we don't sell will get loaded up and dropped off at local thrift store. It will not come back in the house. :thumbsup2

So I just wanted to post an update:

We didn't get a call back last night, so, just as I promised my DH, I agreed to just move on. As luck would have it, my phone rang bright and early this morning, and it was the property management company saying our application was approved. The specific property manager we were working with was out sick yesterday and again today, so she asked someone else in the office to make a decision, since she's not sure when she will be back in the office. The person looked at it, approved it, and let us know, so they're sending over the lease for us to sign, and that's that. I'm really happy because we love the house and it's exactly where we want to be and has everything we wanted. I'm so happy to have this over and done with, and the move feels more real now pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:

Yesterday I sorted out two drawers in my husband's dresser. Started a new bag for Goodwill and tossed a few books in there I've read or tried to read.

I'm also being very good at NOT buying more stuff for the house, books, unneeded clothes, etc.

We are behind on spring cleaning. I guess the good thing about that is I will get that yellow pollen off the windows later in the season...

I am on a mission to not buy any clothes for 2 years.
Unless one of my kids get married-and I already have a dress I want to wear if
one of them does get married.
I actually took 4, 50 gallon bags to Good Will between me and my dh clothes.
It is too easy to shop online for clothes. I had no idea I had so much clothes until I sorted through everything this Spring.
I am actually ashamed.
I was hoping to feel better by admitting what I done.
Not working yet.
Has this happened to anyone else?

It's been a while. Still working on getting rid of the stuff, but going much slower.

Still have a dozen boxes to unpack, put away after our move. But more than half of those are for DD15's room. We are painting before she can unpack those.

Last night, I went through a Bankers box of ticket stubs, programs, information flyers...and when it was all done, the important stuff fit in a shoe box. The rest--all in the garbage.

Preliminary packing for the boys for college so the shelves in the garage are filling up, but they are being very particular about what goes in those boxes. If I don't want it and they don't want it...well, someone must want it. It's off to the thrift.

Handed off about 30 DVD/bluray to a friend. Their family will go through and then will pass them on. I didn't realize we had enough to open a video rental store..

I filled 1 1/2 bags up with more random stuff around the house to be donated. Some more clothes, a few toys, and a couple of kitchen appliances. My goal is to fill up the other half of the bag within the next couple of days and then take it to the donation bin.

We had our big garbage pick up day today, where they will pick up your bigger items. We threw out our ottoman that had a few rips and scratches from cat and dog claws, a broken bar stool and an old computer chair. So it's nice to have those items out of here as well.

I've also had a huge fire pit up on Craigslist for the past few weeks, but it hasn't moved (lots of flaky people.) The item is heavy and I didn't want to have to lift it out of our yard to donate it, so I put it up on the free section of craigslist, basically saying you move and haul it and you can have it. Someone came within 15 minutes!

My husband leaves in 8 days, so we have lots of cleaning, packing and decluttering to finish up, so it should be a busy week for us.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!

Today I hauled off over 326 items out of the house to the local kids consignment sale. I get a 70% cut of sales. It is soo easy that I look forward twice a year to declutter. I had a lot less this time than in Oct. I made just over $600 in the October sale. Felt good to get rid of what we don't need/use and to make a little WDW $$ out of it.

any other decluttering has been on hold. The last 6 wks of school is proving to be insanely busy. I have many to do projects that must be done by then.

hope to continue during the summer.
