2013 Destash- this is the year!

Put together a bag of shoes the kids aren't going to wear anymore and a bag of winter gear to drop off at goodwill.

Up to 1712 things gone today! Most of the new total came from kids toys that they wanted to let go.

I gutted the linen closet yesterday, got rid of sheets that don't fit DD's bed anymore, she has an expandable bed and it's now a full twin size.
Purged empty boxes, old meds, etc. It's all nice and clean with the exception of the top shelf, DH needs to help me reach that.

Works been stressful so havent detash much. Craigs list is pretty slow. In the last month I've sold 5 pairs of jeans and today I sold one of dd's toys she never opened from 2-3 years ago. Made a total of $40 for jeans and toy.

Dh works this Saturday so I hope to take some more photos of stuff to list.
I also plan on giving the house a good cleaning so hopefully I will find some stuff to destash

DH and I spent all day yesterday getting ready for the garage sale. We moved everything out of the house that was going, and I have to say, I am so sore. There was nothing extremely heavy, but I guess just the repetition of lifting boxes and bookshelves and stuff down the stairs got to me. Everything is priced and ready to go. :thumbsup2

Then this morning I was running around the house trying to finish filling up a half filled big black garbage bag up with stuff before the garbage man came. I ended up tossing all the half used rolls of wrapping paper, ribbon, and half-used bags of bows, since those certainly won't be making the move with us and then tossed the pillows in our spare room.

Our garage sale is tomorrow, so hopefully it goes well. I'm more excited to get rid of everything, whether it be selling it or donating it once the garage sale is over. I can't believe how much stuff we got out of the house and into the garage. The house is really starting to look bare now.

Sounds like everyone is making a lot of progress!
I did the master bedroom yesterday, that went really well and I found a lot to donate. Today I am in the process of doing the master bathroom. It is a mess! I've already thrown away a lot.

Purple Heart took 7 garbage bags full of stuff today, and we are donating a futon, Papasan chair, and crib mattress on Monday.

One week down on my two week period to get the house on the market. All I do is clean, destash, and paint up marks/nail holes on the wall. It's insane.

At least I've been destashing all along, so I really don't feel like we have an overwhelming amount of stuff. Currently lining boxes of winter stuff up along the garage walls.

Good luck with your garage sale carebee21!

We went through our master closet and dresser. We found 4 garbage bags full of clothes to donate. They either don't fit us anymore, or we simply don't like them (they came to the marriage and the other spouse got the veto power!)

We have most of the house packed for the move. We have a few more pieces to sell on craigslist, but our ebay auctions are over and we made another $300! Can't beat that when you are moving.

Have a nice weekend everyone.

Good luck with the yard sale Carebee.

Sounds like everyone is making excellent progress!

My plans for the weekend are to organize the garage and pack up board games with the boxes I already have. Plus I have mail back a couple textbooks to Amazon, I'm very excited that one of the books is being bought back for $20 more than I paid, I'm ignoring that another book is a $80 loss. Lol

Good luck with your garage sale carebee21!

Thank you both for the well wishes. I was very hesitant about the garage sale, but it went amazing. We got rid of tons of stuff and made almost $350. I am absolutely floored, as I thought we would maybe make $100. Tons of small items sold (kids clothes, toys, video games and DVDs.) and both of our larger bookcases sold. Sadly, we had so much stuff, that it barely looks like we made a dent in how much stuff we had in our garage sale pile, even though we sold tons. Unfortunately (or fortunately for my DH) two of our neighbors came over towards the end of the sale and told us they were both planning on having a garage sale next Sunday so maybe we wanted to join in and they'd advertise it as a multi-house garage sale. We had lots of stuff still left over, so DH said yes :crazy2: I was so looking forward to getting rid of all the clutter at the end of the day, but DH said since everything is already ready to go and we don't have to do any of the advertising or hanging signs, it will be simple, so I relented. Guess I'll be spending my birthday weekend having another garage sale. Although I guess I really shouldn't whine, because if it is anything like it was today, it is easy money! So I'll be going through the house one more time this week to see if there's anything else to throw out at the garage sale. But, the silver lining is that I got a notice in the mail today that the Vietnam Veterans are doing a pick-up in our neighborhood on 04/30, so anything I still have left at that point will be donated to them, and DH won't even have to load anything up in the truck and drop it off. So that works out pretty well, I suppose :)

I hope you are all having a productive weekend!

The garage clean out got us to our goal! 2016 things (we were going for 2013 in 2013)! Now I need to set a new goal and keep going (though I'm not sure what we have left to get rid of or what the goal should be!). Very happy right now!

Well I've packed another 4 boxes and cleaned up the garage and put the air hockey table at the curb (apparently it is a boy attractor since we had a bunch out there in just a few mins! Lol) and one of the neighbors came by and asked to take it within an hour so yay, I don't have to take it to goodwill! Plus I have a trunkful for goodwill tomorrow morning. I'm filling the last box I have and I'll pick up some stuff from the storage unit tomorrow after I do the goodwill drop off. I have to have the storage unit emptied before may 15th so I don't have to pay for another month.

Congrats; sounds like you did amazing at your garage sale! :worship: It is a bummer to have to do another one, but it sounds like you won't have to do very much work, and just get to rake in the dough! :thumbsup2

I'm thinking about doing a garage sale, but I'm not sure we have enough stuff to make it worthwhile. Also, my family never gets excited about the idea, so I'm not sure I would get much help from them.

I finally got around to listing some things on ebay that have been in a box in my room for quite awhile now. If they don't sell I am donating them next week to a boy scout yard sale. I know Dh will be happy for me to get that box out of our room.

My next project is "decluttering" a hot tub. It is set down into out deck, I'm hoping that I can get someone on craigslist to come get it since it works, but I have to clean it first. I can't decide whether to list it for free or for like $100 so I get more serious responses. It came with our house so I won't lose any money either way, getting rid of it will save me $6 a year on my home owners insurance, lol, every penny counts.

We finished up our garage sale today and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. We made $170 and got rid of more stuff. But best of all, everything that was left at the end of the day was boxed and bagged up, and we will put it out tomorrow for the Vietnam Veterans charity to pick up tomorrow. I'm so ecstatic to be done with the garage sales and done with keeping all that excess clutter.

So how is everyone else's weekend coming along?

I have created a large pile for goodwill that I'll drop off this week. I also mailed out the kids winter boots to a couple of my friends so those are gone. Plus I have 2 large bags of books that I'm going to drop off at the kids school for the library. And another pile of clothes that I'm going to offer up to my friends.

I have all our books packed up, all of YDD's books and all our knick knacks packed up. My room is full of boxes now and all the winter clothes are packed up. I still have a ton of work to do but at least I can see I'm making progress.

We used to do garage sales in our neighborhood every spring, and while we all did okay, it was a ridiculous amount of work.

So when we had our Super Bowl party, we all voted to just donate everything and take tax deductions. DH and I (along with other families) used Turbo Tax and were shocked to see how much you can deduct for items!! No way would we ever (in a million years!!) get that much for our stuff. So we are done with garage sales forever.

Have any of you done the same?

We were all so happy at our neighborhood party and celebration last night!! :thumbsup2 ;)

Since it's working, I bet you could list it higher than that & still get responses. Keep us posted how it goes!

I tried to use TaxAct for deductions then it asked about the original price of the item. Can you just put in the item to get a value or do you have to know what you paid originally? I have a big pile of DD's clothes to donate or consign but haven't decided which to do.

We have not gotten much done but I have a slow week and hope to get the garage under control again. It was looking pretty good but it's such a dumping ground over the winter! Our basement is torn up due to some water leaks. All the stuff I wanted to carry down from DD's room is still sitting on her floor til the basement is ready again. Ugh.

I'm not familiar with TaxAct but can ask some of my neighbors / friends at the bus stop later.

With Turbo Tax, there are two columns regarding quality -- I think they're "excellent" and "fair". Don't remember now but its something like that. It then lists the value they give for each, and you just input the number of that item that you donated.

For example women's capris were listed at something like $7 and $4 (again NOT SURE OF ACTUAL AMOUNTS b/c we did our taxes quite awhile ago) and then I input the number I donated of each. And just about any or every item you can think of is listed, from individual HBAs, Toys, Garden items, Kitchen items & utensils -- everything!! (I remember seeing 'gravy-ladle' listed LOL but I didn't donate one of those)

So you need to keep GOOD records or what you donate, but there's no way we'd get that much per item at a garage sale.

Plus, I truly feel like it's making a difference to donate as there are so many people in great need these days. pixiedust:
