2012? No Problem...but when?

Thought I would take this chance to give a bit more background on our family. We were a 'normal' military family, moving every 3 years (although we actually averaged at least one move a year). I discovered it was the best way to actually clean house! My older kids loved it. They always knew no matter how much they loved or hated a place, we would be moving soon.

The hardest move on them was when we were preparing for retirement and moved back to GA. At least it was back to GA for me, since I grew up here. Hubby grew up in Missouri. My kids all thought this small town in Metro Atlanta was the most 'red-neck' place in the world! They eventually adjusted...

As they started leaving home, one by one, hubby and I started enjoying our new found freedom. Prior to this, I was a stay at home mom. With no little ones around I went back to work. I was enjoying a new life as an insurance underwriter and making pretty good money. We traveled every other weekend. You rarely found us at home. The beach, the mountains, where ever as long as we could make it in a day.

And then...Miss B came into our lives. At first it was only on the weekends. Then we started taking her with us on our trips. It is easy to think that she had traveled more in her first year of life than most people did during their whole lives! In fact, she was with us at the beach when her little brother was born when she was 15 months old.

A few months later, he started joining us on a few of those weekends. It wasn't long before DFACS decided their bio mom wasn't capable of taking care of them and they came to live at our house. Within a year they were added to our family as our (sort of ) forever kids.

Our first trip to Disney was soon after the courts awarded us permanent custody. (there was no fight from any bio) It was right after Miss B turned 3. It was kinda cute to have to pay for her...not so much now!

The planning for that trip went something like this...I won a gift certificate from work for a week's stay at a popular hotel chain. I won the certificate on Monday. By Tuesday we had a reservation in Orlando made, and a trip to Disney was born. On Friday, I had ordered the tickets from undercover tourist, and we left on Saturday morning. Did I forget to mention it was spring break week?

It was crowded, it was hot, we had no reservations for eating anywhere, and it took us an hour to get from the hotel to Disney property!

We never made it to a park before noonish! And we never stayed past 6pm!

But we had a blast!

That started our almost annual expeditions to Disney!

Our next trip involved a bit more planning and a bit LESS money. It still was spring, but we stayed at Shades of Green and got the tickets from there as well. We only had one ADR (Garden Grill) but it was enough. We actually decided one day to stay at the hotel and swim rather than to go to the park. (Unbelievable!)

Our next trip was ill fated from the beginning. I had planned on surprising the family with a trip. We were going in June to celebrate Miss B's birthday and Father's day. She would be turning 5 on Father's Day. For Christmas, everyone was given a stuffed Mickey Mouse (rather large size) and Dad's held a banner saying "We are going to Disney!"

It, of course was a hit on Christmas Morning. It was the most notice we had ever had for a vacation. That alone gave Hubby problems!

Unfortunately, that trip never materialized. ( Thinking about it now, I realize I don't think I ever got the money back from that cancelled trip.) On April 22, 2005, my family was involved in a horrific automobile accident. My mother, who lived with us, always picked the kids up from day care. She took them in the morning and then picked them up around 3 or 4. That way she had her own life during the day and they didn't have to spend too much time at day care.

On the way home that afternoon, she pulled out from a stop sign into traffic coming at her at 55 mph. She was killed instantly and Mr D, sitting directly behind her was seriously injured.

At that moment my life changed. My mother was gone, but I had no time to grieve for her. My son and daughter were taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We had conflicting reports from EMS. One report said that both kids were deceased, an another said that one was deceased and the other had cuts and bruises.

I believe that drive into Atlanta was the longest drive of my life. I only remember bits and pieces of the next 6 weeks. I do know that the emergency room at Eggelston Hospital is the greatest! They treated us like we were the only patients there. The parking lot was covered in Walton County Sheriff's Department Cars. The waiting room was filled with family and friends. I think almost everyone of our church family was there. People I hadn't seen in years was there. We had at least a hundred assorted people waiting to see what the results were.

Luckily, our 4 year old, Miss B, only had a few stitches to her forehead from flying glass. Unfortunately, she never lost consciousness during the accident. She knew her grand mother was dead and she heard the original EMS saying her brother was dead. She saw the helicopter come and take away her brother. She told me the helicopter was an angel and was taking her brother and grand mother to heaven.

After all this time she still has the emotional scars from that accident.

Her brother, who was three at the time, suffered from a Traumatic Brain Injury and a collapsed lung. He was clinically dead at the scene, but we were very fortunate that an emergency room doctor was across the street and witnessed the accident. She was first on the scene and started working on him. She had already called for a life flight for my son before the rest of EMS got there. He coded many times before they got him to the hospital.

He was in a coma for a week. When he finally came out, there was concern that he would never regain anything. He was paralyzed, he could not speak, and his eyes were blank.

We spent another 6 weeks in Rehab. I never left his side. He had 8 hours a day of extensive rehab. The original goals for him were to get him off the feeding tube (he couldn't swallow) and to have him make a purposeful movement. They set a time frame of 6 weeks for that. Meantime, they were teaching me how to do his feeds and take care of him.

A week into the rehab, he made his first purposeful movement. He reached for a toy.

On Mother's Day...he spoke! I had left the hospital and my older daughter spent the night with him. When I arrived back that morning, he smiled and said "I love you" . Those were the best words I ever heard!

His progress from then on was steady, but it was clear he was not going to be 'normal' ever again. Within 6 weeks, he remembered he was potty trained, started being able to eat small bits and got off the feeding tubes, regained the use of his right side, and started talking in a strange monotone voice we called his monster voice. The only good thing to come out of the accident...his asthma was completely gone!

It has now been 7 years since the accident that has defined our lives. Miss B is still as smart as ever and consistently scores perfect on her standardized testing (CRCT) and is in middle school. Mr D is still unable to read, but is starting to grasp some math concepts. He loves Science and history and loves to be read to. He has regained partial use of his left side, and is no longer in a wheelchair. In fact, he barely walks it is usually a run! He is emotionally and mentally a three year old. Disney is his favorite place in the world!

Sorry this was so long! I do tend to get wordy!

I promise to be more upbeat on future installments!

On to the planning!

Nini

I applaud you and your family in the struggles you have overcome in the last 7 years. Reading your story brought tears to my eyes. :littleangel:

Thanks for joining in and I promise...not everything is sad...

:offtopic: Nini, I have a two part question for you.

I've saved a bagillion embroidery files on my computer -- mostly free ones. I don't know when I think I'll use them all, or what projects they'll go on, but like collecting fabric it's an addiction. I remember you've mentioned that you have a lot of files as well.

Both of my questions relate to how much space I'm sure they're taking up on my computer.

Q1. After downloading zipped files do you unzip them and delete the formats you can't use? Or do you just save them zipped? I honestly don't know which takes up less space.

Q2. Do you save your files to CD (or DVD or USB) and then delete them from the computer?

Thanks for your insight -- and I'm excited that your trip is getting closer. I'll probably do my annual solo trip the end of February, but nothing planned yet. I can't wait to see the new Fantasyland and eat at Be Our Guest. I love Beauty and the Beast -- I saw it twice on Broadway.

:mickeybar <---- not off topic any more :rotfl2:

Cheryl...

Since I don't get over to the Disboutique much any more...I've missed you!

When I first started saving them I just saved by name...then quickly realized it was not easy to find them that way!

I always delete the formats i don't need, but keep the sizes I can't use. My reasoning is, if I ever get a different machine I can always change the format with a few clicks on the computer, but changing size takes skill as a digitizer (at least on the ones that are done well!) I usually do that before I save .

I back up my files on my external hard drive, as well as my network, as well as a disk. Can you tell I have had problems with my computer crashing? But I never delete them from the computer. My computer has a pretty big memory, so this hasn't been a problem so far. I also put them on the computer in the sewing studio (it is an OLD desktop). There is no advantage on doing that...since it is so slow I could run upstairs to my main computer and easily pop it on a thumb drive...but I keep telling myself I should put them there as well!

Right now my laptop is showing signs of a hard drive failure... my IT guy says since this thing has given me so much problems in the short time I have had it ...well it might not be a good choice to have it fixed. I am hoping that after the first of the year I can get a new one...either a desk top or an all in one.

That stinks about the quilt expo and I find the Disney Store either hit or miss.

Great deal on the coffee cup.

I LOVE my new Mickey mug...and my almost Disney hating husband (he is quickly turning into a convert) asked why I didn't get him one! They did have a Minnie, but she was wearing the pink dress and I prefer the red.

What a bummer about the quilt expo... But I am glad you got to get out and have the diversion.

And a bummer about no Belle/B&tB items at TDS... Glad you got your gift cards though. :)

Love the trivia idea!

D~

You know, even though the Expo was a bust, we still have a great time. And still managed to have enough time to get home, clean (actually just straighten...my house hasn't been clean in so long I have forgotten how it should look!) the house and put on the chili for the football extravaganza!

I don't know if I had posted here or not, but my Mickey Head countdown calendar was supposed to start at 60 days. I had all 60 days ready to go and the poster board waiting on me. I had taken then with me to therapy one day and lost the whole bag! Over the weekend I found them! So we now have a new Disney countdown calendar sitting on the hearth...because I can't find a good place to put it! LOL.

Today we will pull off #31, it has a trivia question and an activity or question for the kids on the back. I feel like Disney is actually on its way now!

In my prep calendar, I had set aside Sunday as my day to find all gift cards and start packing away things we are taking with us. After I searched all the regular places, I was still missing...my photopass + voucher; a $100 Visa gift card; and one $25 Cracker Barrel gift card. I was in panic mode big time!

After cleaning my desk, I was able to find all except the $25 Cracker Barrel card...so I feel a little better. My budget has dwindled much more than I had hoped, and those gift cards were very important to my bottom line. All the gift cards are now snugly in my Dorine bag waiting for our trip!

Yesterday we took a quick trip to the mountains. We had my 12 year old daughter, my 11 year old son, my 5 year old grand daughter and a 13 year old friend. My husband called it a trial run for the trip to Disney. I called it chaos! If there was ever any doubt about why we travel down to Disney during the darkness of night...that took care of it. We left at 9:30 and returned by 7pm... those girls talked, sang, giggled and screamed the whole way! The only time they were quiet was when they were shoving food in their mouths! LOL! My poor Mr D said next time we had to take someone for him!

On a side note...I had my post op visit yesterday. He said I have to come bak in January for some more tests, although he did clear me for Disney. (as if him saying I couldn't go was really going to make a difference! LOL!) He said it will still take another 4 to 6 weeks for my stamina to come back, I should enjoy it just fine... I don't think he realized that my stamina HAS to be back in less than 4 weeks!

I prefer Minnie in the red dress too.

LOL about the Disney calendar... I am glad you found it. Since you have an extra - you can send it to me (ROFL)... I could use it in about 300 days.

I hope you are able to find the CB GC... I know what you mean about those GCs, each one adds up and they are all important!

ROFL about the Dorine bag... I am dying to see pictures of it in the parks! :lovestruc

Glad you had a good Dr. visit and your stamina should be back to normal soon - I am confident it will be back to normal before your trip... And I know this is hard to do - but please try to take it a little easy down there, we don't need you hurting yourself... This is supposed to be a do-over trip - remember... I am not sure what the rules are for a double do-over... but I guess, if you need an excuse for another trip - that would be it. :woohoo: But then you would have 2 trips to do-over... Which maybe isn't the worst thing in the world? :rolleyes1

Heavy heart this morning.

A wonderful young man has left us to go home to God. It is very sad for all involved. It makes you stop and remember that no one is guaranteed another day.

Eighteen year old Tate Williams was on his way to a preaching engagement in Texas. The person driving the opposite way over corrected and hit him head on. He broke both femurs and had a crushed pelvis. He had to be cut out of the vehicle and was air flighted to the nearest hospital. His very serious injuries were not supposed to be life threatening. As his parents were flying to Texas to be with him, he started having seizures. The doctors decided to put him in a coma until they could tell what was going on.

Then he had clots develop in his lungs and his kidneys stopped functioning. There was some swelling in his brain. His parents did get to see him before they took him back to surgery, but he was unconscious.

Yesterday they did several tests, but they all showed the same results. Tate Williams had went home to heaven shortly after the first seizure.

His girlfriend is part of my younger daughter's youth group. Tate visited with us at church numerous times. His parents are friends with my older daughter and her husband. He was homeschooled his whole life. While other kids his age were out getting in trouble and driving their parents crazy, he was out preaching. He was a great driver, but he wasn't driving at the time of the accident. He was a passenger in a car driven by another great driver. There was nothing they could have done to avoid the accident.

Please, give your kids an extra hug today. You never know when it will be the last hug.

Nini

Oh Nini - I am so very sorry for your loss. That is just the saddest of stories. As a parent, we do everything we can to protect our children, and that is one of my biggest fears - now that the girls are getting older and they will be riding with other people.

I am sending many hugs out to you and prayers of peace during this time for his family and friends.

Nini, I can't imagine what the parents, extended family, friends and aquaintances are going through. You're so right about you never know one day to the next . . .

I had actually stopped by to get your response to my "saving" questions. Thank you for such a detailed answer. It reinforces what I thought that I'm not doing enough to save designs I've collected. I guess it's time to break down and buy an external hard drive.

~Cheryl

Nini - So sorry to hear about your friend Tate. He sounds like he was a wonderful person. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Thanks for the thoughts ad prayers on Tate's passing. The youth group at church is planning a memorial service (complete with tree planting) during the Thanksgiving holidays. Seeing the kids plan it on Wednesday night really lifted my spirits. Seems the kids have a better handle on the whole thing than the adults do.

Now, back to Disney...and you KNOW that if it involves me there has to be drama!

We have a Trivia question contest each week, and I send off a newsletter type thing with notes on a particular park, restaurant etc. All of those emails are on my laptop. (makes it easier to send them out that way, and I am actually working on a newsletter type thing to send to my clients that I book Disney trips for)

Anyway, you would think that saving them to the external hard drive as well as the network was a good idea...not so much!

My laptop had an "imminent hard drive failure" message for me yesterday. I made sure a new back up was done and called my IT guy (better known as my son in law!)

In the meantime, I am attempting to use the net book. TINY net book! Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the external hard drive. The only way the network will recognize the documents is if the laptop is on. (next purchase will be an external hard drive that is directly connected to the network!)

I am planning on waiting until after the first of the year to buy a new computer... so he has been instructed to find the cheapest solution he can for now! Hopefully it will not interfere with my Disney budget too much!

Anyways...we have a little under 28 days until Disney! Actually, at this time in 28 days we will be pulling into breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Ocala.

I have managed to get all but one Christmas Princess finished for the Grand Princess' dress for Akershus, and then I just have to finish putting it together. I have 8 more shirts to knock out and then one day where I have no clue what we are wearing... I think Hubby will be paying for that one! LOL!

I am really getting excited about the New Fantasyland Opening up. Disney has extended the whole park hours for those non party dates during November until the Annual Passholder reviews are finished. Then they are going back to the soft opening. It appears I will get to see not only the New Fantasyland, but it appears the rumors are that Test Track will be back open when we go...if only in soft opening mode!

As of this minute...it looks like no real closures will be effecting us during our trip. There are a few closures in the resorts and water parks, and maybe a couple of refurbs in the golf courses...but nothing that will have any effects on our touring!

I was really crossing my fingers on the Fantasy Land, but wasn't too concerned. The one I was sweating over was the Test track. Mr D would have a melt down every time we stepped foot in Epcot if it remained closed. Every time we have talked about it he has had a melt down! We thought that if we prepared him for it we could avoid the problem...but it was turning into something unbelievable! The best we got was he would go to Epcot once...if Test Track wasn't open he would not go back! since we end up in Epcot almost every other night...this could be a problem!

Confession time...Normally by this date, all packing (with the exception of the shirts I would still have to complete) would be packed! I haven't even printed out the packing list yet! (well, with the printer issues I currently have I guess it is safe to say I will be just hand writing the packing lists this time around!)

Also, from my TGM days, I still use the spreadsheet from there to plan my trips. With the a fore mentioned computer/printer issues, I can no longer access that form. Luckily I discovered EverNote. It is easily transferred from computer to phone and to another computer. So I will be able to update the changes in hours on the netbook and transfer it to my phone. Prior to my surgery I spent several hours tweaking all the information in EverNote so now I only need to update things as they change.

Much easier to get all members of the party on the same page. That way I don't have to print anything and everyone can print out just what they want!

Time to get the kiddies up... Last official day of Fall break! Can't let them sleep all day!

Nini

I just stopped by to say..........

Sorry I have been missing a bot here ...I am having computer issues AGAIN! Seems i have to get a new hard drive. So in the mean time I get to use the netbook we originally bought for Miss B. It is too small for my long fingers (considering the arthritis )to type for more than a minute or two.

I get to order the new hard drive later this afternoon, so I am hoping it will come in by this weekend so I can get my laptop back. I am 99% sure that I will get a new computer after the first of the year... I cannot get into any of the travel agent sites with this thing...and the slowness of this is next to writing on cave walls!

Last Friday, hubby decided to go into Athens to get the oil changed in my van. At that point he still had not decided which vehicle we were taking to Disney in 22 days! He wanted to have the van checked out to make sure it was good to go. It was a 2005, with almost 150,000 miles on it, but he had maintained it pretty good.

He dropped me and the kids off at the mall while he went to the dealershp for the oil change. We walked around as much as we wanted to, but with a few days before payday, there was nothing I wanted to spend any money on...the kids were getting hungry, so I gave him a call to see how much longer he would be (trying to see if he wanted to have lunch with us).

He said it should be finished and he would see us in a minute....and he drove up in a different van. His story was, ours wasn't finished so they gave him a loaner. Well the kids loved it, and kept telling him to go home so we didn't have to get our old van back.

All through lunch he kept singing the praises of the new van...but I wouldn't bite. He loves to drive new cars and I think he secretly misses my old obsession with only driving new cars! (the best cure for that obsession was not working for over 6 years!)

After a couple of hours driving around town, he drove back to the dealership and signed the papers. The van was my new chariot and birthday present!

I had forgotten how much I loved driving a new car! It is so nice to know that the trip will not only be safe, but luxurious as well! Since my van was paid for I was hesitant to take on a new bill, but hubby's new truck is also paid for, and we got a really good deal on the trade in on my van. Since my 'new' van is a couple years old, we got a really good deal.

Then on Saturday we had our family birthday celebration. We all met at my oldest son's house and he smoked a beef brisket and a pork brisket. They were sooooooo good! My oldest daughter made me a from scratch coffee and chocolate cake with fudge icing. It was really hard to stop at one piece!

My future daughter in law is in training to be great! She gave me a Joann's and a Disney gift certificate! Little does she know those were PERFECT! (well, maybe she does know!) My son and daughter in law gave me a Mickey Mouse cuckoo clock! My cuckoo clock we bought in Germany did not survive the movers when we moved back to Georgia. The move from Germany had no problems (the Germans knew how to pack a cuckoo clock. the Mexicans did not!) but the movers in EL Paso just shoved it in a box with no padding...and I have never gotten around to having it fixed. My son in law (my computer guy) gave me a gift certificate to get my computer fixed. I only have to put a few dollars with it and then I can get it doe. All three kids made me tons and tons of birthday cards and pictures...I am running out of room on the refrigerator...It is almost time to find another place to put my masterpieces!

Today is the monthly celebration for student of the month at my daughter's school. I hate the way they do it... We have to be there at 7am, we go and 'hide' in the library while the kids get passes to leave their rooms and we get to see them get their certificates....then they go back to class.

Perhaps, in a school with such low scores in all standardize testing, they should not hide the accomplishments of those students that excel There is no announcement that the students are getting the awards, if they cannot get the hall passes they miss out completely on the presentation. Parents are not allowed to speak to the kids, and they get their awards with their backs to the parents so we can't even get pictures!

My daughter has taken a 'whatever' attitude about the awards...which she used to be very competitive about.

I have tons to do and still am having some stamina issues...to which my doctor replied...it was to be expected since I wasn't the youngest patient he ever had! LOL!!

I'm thinking I should be able to get some last minute shopping done today so I can actually get the packing started! The luggage is sitting there mocking me... sitting in the corner of the living room...behind the recliner. I am so behind! LOL!

Congratulations on a new van Nini!!! Please tell us more about it!!! Make... Model... Year... Extras... LOL I love hearing about new cars.

I know how you feel about the payments too... We had our van paid off for over 6 years - and no other car payments in that time. It was very hard to go back to having payments - but I love my Edge, and very glad to have a reliable vehicle again.

What wonderful birthday gifts you received too - all of them were so thoughtful! Love that you have your Disney coo-coo clock fixed, I would love to see pictures of it!

Whoot - your trip is so close!!! I am super excited for you and your family!

OK..

It is a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country Touring van. It has dual video screens, Satellite radio and tv, dvd player, navigation system, Ipod connection, back up camera, stow and go seating, Stadium seating, power everything (including doors...my favorite) leather seating with heated seats, ...I can't remember what it is called, but it has the integrated phone through the radio thingy...very important for me since i won't answer the phone when I am driving!

I am sure there are other things...but those are the things I have played with. Several years ago I had a fully loaded van with all the bells and whistles...and missed it terribly when I traded it in on a 'family' car. we were going to trade it in on another van (fully loaded) when my mom had her accident. Suddenly, driving a new car no longer held the attraction for me, so we got a van...a basic van. At the time we needed to consider carrying a wheelchair with us, so that was the most important thing.

Just to clear up...I did not get my cuckoo clock fixed. The Mickey Mouse cuckoo clock is from Bradford Exchange and is new. While it is battery operated, and not a true cuckoo clock, it is pretty cool! Every time the bird comes out (it whistles instead of cuckoos) Max gives it a strange look. He hasn't quite made up his mind about it. I think it may need to find a home a bit higher on the wall. When he stretches out to reach something he is taller than I am...and I am 5 ft 10 inches tall!

Trying to decide if I want to go shopping at Joann's today, or wait until I can use my 25% coupon this weekend! Add that to the sale...and the gift certificate...I think I can really SCORE!

OMG!!! That sounds like an amazing van!!! It's like a rolling movie theatre! It will be perfect for your trip - more than ever, I want to tag along now so that I can ride in it. LOL I have to say that I love my Edge - but I miss my mini van in the worst way - that was the best/most comfortable/convenient vehicle we have ever had, and I wouldn't hesitate to have another. Mine was a Dodge - but LOVED it!

LOL about Max, MM is the same way - he is taller than most of us - and loves to stand on his hind legs to "give hugs" - unfortunately, visitors don't enjoy his "hugs" all that much. Sigh.

Nini congrats on the new car. We are looking into a new car in the next few months. My Durango is a 2005. I am probably going to get a new Durango but I have looked at the Town and Country but DH will never get a minivan.

Funny...we have looked at the Durangos. When they first came out we were really close to getting one, but they are just not big enough for us. With the new body styles it is better, but still too little space! We drive on all our vacations, so we need all the space we can get!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

I am so mad I could scream...actually I think I did!

When we weren't sure which date we were taking for Disney, husband requested all the days for both trips. When we didn't go in Sept, he gave up some of those days but kept some others (that was when I had my surgery). With the county, it is supposed to be first come first served. If someone has the days marked that you want, you have to ask them to give up their days.

Hubby's vacation was supposed to start on the Wednesday before we left. He was already off on Monday and Tuesday...so he took Wednesday and Thursday...they have 12 hour shifts (of course, since he is a shift commander, he has to stay until all reports are turned in and corrected.) On holidays, that usually means at LEAST 2 hours extra.

Now, to day, he finds out that someone marked him working on Thanksgiving! Someone else wanted off so someone higher up made the decision that he would work....

Now, on the 22nd he will work until at least 9 pm, come home, finish loading the car and get ready to drive starting at 3am!

The first in command will be deer hunting on T day, so that means he has to work! (he is second in command) They would never ask the first in command to actually give up his deer hunting!!! The reason this is so frustrating is the sneaking way it was done. He requested (and was approved) these dates in JANUARY! He only found out because they got the duty roster for the month today...when he checked last week he was still marked as off.

So, while we are enjoying our first day at magic Kingdom, husband will either a) be sleeping in the room or b) being a total grump with us at Magic Kingdom. (Something about not sleeping tends to make him grumpy!(

On the other hand, in good news, I did manage to start packing...

I am so sorry this happened Nini - and I totally understand why you are upset - I would be too.

I am glad you were able to start packing though.

Oh Nini I am so sorry about hubbies work! :( I cannot imagine how frustrated you all are!
The van sounds amazing though! And congrats on getting started packing!!

I can so relate to this. I will be doing the single parenting route until further notice because DH will be working 4pm to 4am I understand the reasoning but I could really use the help.
