Hi,
I will be renting DVC points visiting in oct 2012.
I am considering getting a dining plan, but was wondering how it works. I have read that when you stay DVC, you don't have to get the dining plan for all of the days of your trip like when you stay in a regular room in a resort. Is that true? And if it is, are the food credits good for your whole stay, or will they expire when the time period you got it for is up?
For example, I will be staying 7 days. If i get the Standard Plan, it will include 7TS and 7CS (14 meals in total) and 7snacks. But if I opt for Deluxe plan for only 5 days, it will include 15 meals in total and 10 snacks! It only costs a little more to do the deluxe 5 days, and you get more credits. But that is only good if the credits are good for all 7 days, you know?
Does anyone know..or has anyone done this?
Thank you!!

This is called "segmenting". I'm not sure for 2012, as there was talk about doing away with segmenting, but I don't know the outcome of that.

However, it is/was not working as you're explaining. Basically you'd choose a dining plan for part of your stay, and that part would be the only one where the credits were active. So, if you booked it for 5 days out of 7, the credits would still expire before midnight of the last day of the plan. It works just like split stays do on the resort side, minus the ticket requirement.

Do you happen to know if DVC members get any kind of discount on dining plans? I will be renting points...

They no longer are allowing segmenting. So it's all or none. It's also per night -- You said you were staying 7 days. Is that 7 days and 7 nights? If you are staying 7 days/6 nights, then you would only get 6 of each type of credit for your trip.
There is no "discount" for DVC on the dining plan, except-- that DVC doesn't have to pay peak pricing for the DDP. They can pay the regular price, even during peak season. But I believe October 2012 should be off peak regardless.

DDP and DxDP are not necessarily a value for all guests. Especially DVC guests who may make use of their kitchens, they can be a very poor value. So figure out how you might use the plan, and figure out whether it would be worth it for you.

As of October they no longer allow segmenting your reservation. The dining plan must also be paid for when it is added, which is more difficult when renting points because only the member can talk to member services.
