2012 Destashing Thread

I got rid of
9 pairs of womens pants
14 tops
2 sweaters brand new
I made $70 and that was 2 boxes out of my house:cool1:

The $70 i made on craigs list will be going toward one of my creditcards :)

A couple of weeks ago, I got rid of 5 bags of clothes, 4 brand new bedspreads and 2 floor pillows. That was just in my son's old room. His fiancée came over on Wednesday and went through Christmas ornaments that I've had for 30 years. I had decided some years ago to save them and as each of our three children got married they could go through them and choose what they liked. She found enough to fill a large Rubbermaid container. My husband was so excited. ;)
After Christmas when my husband's busy time at work is done, we're destashing every cabinet, drawer and closet in the house, workshop and cabana.

Sounds like your off to a great start!!!

I ended up tossing out 1 large bag(equals 4 groery size bags) of trash. I took pictures of stuff I needd to post on CL. I completed all my CL postngs. My sis was going to have a yardsale today but canceled due to weather. She plans on having it next weekend .I'll take my stuff over there.

Updatejust sold another 4 pairs of jeans. Now i just need to reorganize and retake pictures of the ones that i have left. The sizes are all mixed up now-lol!

5 mins ago I walked into my spare room and it just feells great not to see a huge pile of stuff.

I plan on working in that room today again. If I get everything finished then during Thanksgiving break I will start on the garage.

Am I the only one decluttering on this 3day weekend????lol! I packed up another 4 boxes and 3 bags. I took the pictures i need of the items and had dh take it all to the garage. If I have buyers it easy and organized to find the items.

I'm starting to see progress in this spare room.

I decluttered the cabinet over the kitchen desk last night (aka the cabinet where we throw everything we don't know what to do with). Threw out a bunch of stuff, and found 9 cookbooks to get rid of.

Also, 2 of the 3 kids cleaned their rooms last weekend, and I have two bags of clothes to donate. Purple Heart is coming tomorrow, so it will all be gone!

Good work! Sounds like you are on a roll! Sadly, I don't have a 3 day weekend but did tackle the garage yesterday. It was our last warm day, probably until spring. There are a few piles I need to move to their places inside the house but everything is pretty well put away for the winter. I moved the snow blower where it will be easy to get out & swept up a lot of dirt & crud from the floor.

I also cleared off the kitchen counters & stored some things we don't need now.

I got a pile of kid clothes ready to drop off at the new consignment shop near our house. They advertise that they buy or consign so we'll see how that goes. I'm just taking a small load until I see if it's worth bringing more.

Today will be general cleaning and maybe a little work in the basement. My parents are coming in Dec. and I want to have things in order before they get here.

Like a PP, I have some stuff I need to post to sell and not sure why I keep putting it off. Maybe that will be my goal this week.

My major declutter project has been over with for a while. We moved from a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house in Maine into our 40 foot RV now living in Florida back in April. I thought what the heck let's see what I've got. Thrown a few things away (mostly paper), giving a handful of unopened lotions/potions to one of my new friends and started a box to send back to kids/grandchild in Maine (some Christmas ornaments I wasnt sure on when we moved, Oh forgot I had bought this for grandson type of things)

:beach:

I hadn't done much for decluttering here this weekend. I did post the unopened playmobil sets we have on CL since the boys never got into playmobil as much as legos. Of course ODs saw them and has been hounding me to open them! LOL

I put them up for the similar pricing as I saw on Amazon since most people want to haggle the prices down. Hopefully someone gets interested.

If not, I'll just put them on Ebay closer to Christmas.

Doesn't it feel good to have a cleared off kitchen counter. I love walking into my kitchen and seeing everything cleared. I was eating breakfast this morning and from the dining table i could see how wonderful my kitchen looked, it was such an amazing feeling :goodvibes

Someone emailed me that they were interest in dd's clothes yesterday evening. I just didnt get a good vibe and after 1-2 emails i can tell. When someone emails me to call them and its 11pm no thank you. I just need to follow my gut instinct.

I'm still working in my spareroom. I've been hitting the closet. Found a lot of dust-lol! I have about 2 grocery bags of trash and I'm working on filling up a box of misc junk .

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, for some moral support! In August, I was faced with cleaning out 50 years of accumulation at my parents' home and decided I was crazy not to attack my own, too. Still have lots to do for my mother's house, but I have been "apprenticing" at my own home, first. With the help of a couple of great kids, I have cleaned out a literal couple of truckloads of "stuff" from the basement and garage that travelled straight to the dump. Determined to make my life less stressful, sacks and sacks, boxes and boxes of "things" went directly to Goodwill or SA. Other items, that I don't want to occupy my home or garage any longer, but too large for me to transport to Goodwill, were listed as free on CL and now have new homes. I feel so much better and although I still have lots to do at my parents' home, I am now energized to get it finished and move forward. Thanks, again, for all the inspiring stories. I read this thread until early-thirty this morning, feeling so good that others are doing the same as I. :goodvibes

PS I especially appreciated the "got rid of the wedding dress" post. I have been wondering what I should do with mine and now I have some confirmation that it is just an out-of-date dress and removing it from my life is acceptable. :thumbsup2

I'm so amazed! I cant imagine clearing out 50 years of stuff plus doing your own home. I think you win a decluttering crown:thumbsup2 thats a lot of work! I've only been in my home for almost 14 years and its our first home so we started with nothing. Now its all over the place.

Some might not consider this true decluttering but I'm going through my spare room and boxing stuff up to sell on CL . Those boxes are then moved to the garage until i get buyers. My goal is to clean , organize and paint my spare room. Once that finished I will move to the garage. I've labeled the boxes so if a buyer is interested I just pull it out.

My room is almost finished but painting wont be done until sh has freetime. I'm off work for winter break so I will have 2 weeks to hit the garage. Once garage is finished then my home will be pretty much decluttered free:cool1:

ok , the misc box i was filling up is just about full. I also got rid of a bag that equals 3 grocery bags. and I got rid of lots of DUST!!!!!:rotfl:

My husband and I took our old master bedroom and made it a closet. We still have a closet in the present master. Today I went through my hanging clothes in both closets and I have a contractor sized bag filled with clothes to donate. If I came across a maybe, I asked myself if I could remember the last time I wore it and if I couldn't, into the bag it went. Next I am going through my dressers, night stands, and the tv cabinet in our bedroom.
SO excited and I want to say "Thank-you!". I kept hemming and hawing until I saw this thread-you all inspired me!

I think it is amazing how a little bit of support goes such a long way. I don't think I could have done this w/o my family helping and urging me to purge. I am in complete agreement with the previous poster who stated that once you started ridding yourself of things, that it became easier and easier. I think that is true. I would love to have the extra money for the holidays, but I have a three-day rule: if something was posted on CL and it didn't sell (like a pool table), it was added to the "free" classification and disappeared w/in a couple of hours of posting. Everyone is profusely thankful and I feel as if a large weight is gone. My parents' home is so depressing, I needed decluttering my own home to help me have the confidence to finish their home before the end of the year.

Yep, they moved into my Mother's dream home in the 60's and my Dad was a pack-rat who rarely threw anything away. Their house is FULL and I have just made my first pass-through. Emptied closets and drawers and got all the "must look at" stuff together for siblings to review. What has floored me emotionally with all this is that my Mother has dementia and all the things that she fiercely held onto don't mean anything to anyone else (she was a Lladro collector) and, now, they mean nothing to her, either. My sister and I have been "no gifts" for years (we give to Wounded Warriors in the other's name, instead) and I wish I had been doing the same with others in my family.

I have been reading about all your selling on CL and I am impressed! I just don't have the patience and I was desperate to get space for my car in the garage, so I put a time-limit on selling before it was an automatic freebie. You have been a great inspiration, so keep up the good work!

Everyone here has inspired me too. I think sometimes we just need a lil motivation.

I hate doing yardsales so this year dh got me into Cl. I really dont like meeting strangers but the $$ comes in handy. I'm only a 10 month employee so I dont work in the summer or qualify for unemployment. This summer was pretty hard. I've had issues with my body and was having to go to Chiropractor ($45)on a weekly basis and reflexology($25) from time to time . Well i put everything on the card. Late Sept I had to cut back on my treatment since I started physical therapy($10copay) and I go to massage therapy($61) 1-2 month. I do get medical reinbursment but I have to send in paperwork and wait for the $$. IN the mean time selling on CL comes in handy. It does take patient but the extra money comes in handy.I've had things list since March. Luckily I made $90 which came in handy. It will go to my CC. I still do shop and use creditcards but treatment was killing me $$ wise. Glad I'm doing better.

As far as x-mas dh and I havent echanged gifts for 2 years. We dont need anything and enjoy spending that $$ on our Daughter. We dont go all out either its not worth getting more debt. I bought a keurig on clearance for $65 and thats our x-mas gift for us:goodvibes

To be honest I did have a very difficult time letting go of things but after my mom died almost 14 years ago I realize I wont be taking anything with me. The things I leave behind might be junk to my loved ones but the memories will be priceless and live on in their hearts.

So with the decluttering it helped me buy something new for the house, spending money last year when we went to Disneyland, food, dd's bday and lil gifts for dd stocking so thats why I force myself to be patient-lol!

So everyone who needs motivation put some music on and have fun decluttering. I like to listen to soothing slow music, helps me stay focus

You mean you don't talk to yourself, reinforcing the de-cluttering with continuous encouragement? lol

I have a bull terrier "help" me and we "talk" during the process. When he doesn't answer when I ask, "Should I keep this?" I take it as a "NO!" and out it goes. He is funny, though. He won't let me out of his sight and barks when I am grumbling about "others" not getting rid of their own junk.

I like music, too. Makes it go faster. :thumbsup2

I had dh take out one final box from my spare room Now the only think left is to go through my lil craft drawer, dust and organize it and vaccum and this room is offical done!

Decluttering- I found the cord to my mp3 player whoo whoo:cool1: Now I can charge it up so I can use it on the treadmill. I also found some pictures of me in my younger thinner days. Decluttering and weightloss were my goals for this year. I've followed through with declutttering but not the weightloss. I read you cant lose the weight until you deal with your emotional issues. People who have so much clutter sometimes its because they cant let go of something that happened int he past. Well i just think its funny that i found the cord to the mp3 player cuz i need music to walk so these two things go hand in hand. My body , spirit and mind feel so much clear and free.

My happiness is is my dh madness-lol! Taking so much boxes to the garage he's so annoyed now-hahaha! He does like having all that crap in there but it was ok for everyone to dump their stuff in my spare room. I told him , Next we will work on the garage, My goal is to fix it up sports them and hang up dd softball jerseys and cheer outfit in frames. Dh is a dodger fan and 2 of her jersey are Angels:rotfl2:

I hope by next summer everything will be gone from garage. But its a good feeling to walk in here and be able to relax like I'm doing now and listen to music(spare room: office/craftroom/ironing room). Dh and dd also think it looks great!

so my advice , take it easy and slow if you feel overwhelmed. I started this journey in March and Itis now completed:goodvibes

now on to my next journey...the garage!

Congratulations for reaching your "inside the house" goal, dreamin' disney!

We found the easiest way to purge the garage was to empty it, with the throwaway items going directly to the back of the truck (for their magic journey to the landfill), and the other items sorted in piles for Goodwill, a gentleman my son knows that recycles, CL, and, then, the keep pile. The items that were leaving were moved to their next life and the keep group was then sorted into tools, yard items, etc. We compartmentalized the garage by use, which, I hope, will help to keep it neat.

We have an open concept living room/dining room/kitchen so everything shows. Well this weekend we finally painted the walls and I cleaned off the kitchen counters and the island and it feels nice. I just need to get a vase and some fresh flowers to brighten up the area. Or perhaps something for Christmas for now. Tomorrow I will finish and clean the cabinets underneath. We have a lot of plastic bags, water bottles, and other stuff that just accumulates down there. Otherwise I think we will be house ready for the Thanksgiving party we are hosting.

great job!

I use to have so many knick knacks . I collected angels and would get many as gifts. I got rid of most and only kept a few that were special. I put thos ein my curio cabinet. Knick knack and lots of decoration sometimes makes a room look cluttered. Right now my home looks so nice and neat and only a few pictures on mantel and 3 items on my sofa table. DD's bday is coming and I'm not sire if I want to bring out the xmas decorations. I told dh it might make the house look cluttered-lol! My x-mas decoration go ALL OVER the house-lol!

BTW- turn in your bottles. Dh took the ones dd collected and he bought back $25. I'm not sure how many bags it took but it adds up :)

I was looking for something in my pantry and my seasoning cabinet and wow! Guess what needs to be decluttered/organized again. Seems like I just did it not to long ago.
