2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

Was just doing some reading on the website for IN marching.

Apperently one of the bands in class A finished in 4th place on the scoring sheets, but due to a penalty - and what type of penalty it was is not noted, but it was a 6 pointer - knocked them down to 8th place. You feel bad for the kids.

They are one of the bands that marches BOA, so atleast their season doesn't have to end on that sour note. No pun intended.

What is a typical penalty for the IN scoring? I know that if you don't get off the field in time at BOA you get .5 point penalty (or more if you are REALLY slow). Usually you see one or two of those. If that is the same for IN, I can't imagine what would cause a 6 point penalty :scared1:.

Glad you found us! Since there are several states represented, I'm sure there will be some posting for a few more weeks. Even though our competition season is over, we still have one more regular season football game left. In order to miss Friday's football game (against a fellow poster Gina's son's high school)our director had to promise we would attend the entire playoff run if our football team advanced. Ordinarily, one would think a team with a 2-7 record would not have a prayer, right? This is Texas after all, top 4 teams in each conference advance. If we win Saturday's game, we claim the fourth spot. if
Gina's son's high school repeats as state champion, she'll still be living marching band in December!

Woot!! Bring it on, I already am dreading the end of the season... As much as I love watching the band, I also just plain love watching the football team, and hate for it to end. :goodvibes Plus, I couldn't go to see the team play in the state championship last year because I had used my last vacation day to go watch the band play in their state contest, and I want to go see the team this year! :cheer2:

I am SO happy y'all did so well in Atlanta this weekend -- that is just awesome!! Thanks bunches for keeping me updated the whole time!

I KNOW Brook can beat Dickinson this weekend... I will be watching the #txhsfb tag very closely during the game Saturday!! I wanna see y'all in the playoffs! :yay:

Thank you for the support & the score updates, I was texting the chaperones on the busses. I'm impressed we hung in that closely. Springs beat creek so I'm not sure the 1-4 placements right now. It's probably a mess.

Wow those pictures are amazing! At our contests they only have the field commanders/drum majors on the field for awards.

How fun that comps continue on for a lot of you however I am glad we are done since all our comps are outside!!

For all of the local competitions they only have the drum majors on the field here too. It's pretty cool to watch this unfold at BOA though.

I tried to find an exactly list of what all can be deemed a penalty, but I can't find one. Things I know of, as the kids are reminded of at every ISSMA contest.

Time penalties - getting on and off the field.
Leaving anything on the field.
Excessive noise at the competition site - no loud noise.
Playing outside the warm up area.
Stretching outside the warm up area.
Anything deemed sexual or violant in the content of the show.

I am sure there are many others, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

And when I say on excessive noise, I ain't kidding. I believe it was Avon a couple of years ago, got a noise penalty for accidently dropping a cymbal as they were unloading and stacking instrument. It just slide off and hit the ground. An ISSMA official was right in their unloading area, heard it and gave them a penalty.

Our kids, as soon as the school is in sight, they all know, their butts are in the seats, no talking at all, until the busses are parked, they have gotten their hands stamped and the drum majors release them from the buses. Even then, it is very quite for 160 some people in one small area.

I looked at the BOA forum and they mention the penalty but not what it was for. Come on CURIOUS MINDS WANT TO KNOW :lmao::lmao:. It sounds like that penalty points are about the same so 6 points is HUGE. That band must have left a bunch of stuff on the field or something--maybe they taped hash marks or something and forgot to pick them up???

Good thing Broken Arrow doesn't march in that contest or they would have about 20 penalty points with their show this year :scared1:

DDs high school took first place in their class for ACCs. Competition was on Saturday, during the snow/rain/ice storm, so they were held inside. No marching, but they still won!

Next year, DD wants to do color guard. Hopefully the budget allows them to continue.

I'm so confused on all of it... always am, lol. I read in the 5aTexasFootball forums that B-wood has to beat Springs on Friday and y'all have to beat Dickinson on Saturday for Brook to secure a playoff spot, and if B-wood wins they automatically go to the playoffs. Is that true?? I can't keep it all straight. =/ Let me know if y'all are going to be in the holiday parade there in Friendswood -- FM 2351 is the next intersection from where I live. Would love to come see you guys! :goodvibes

My sons school came in third place in the state competition class 4A. So proud. They worked really hard this year and I hope they keep on improving.

Congrats to both your kids!! :yay:

I am soooo glad I have a boy... Band is expensive enough -- I almost had a stroke when I saw what color guard parents have to pay!!

And I say we keep this thread going -- Marching competition season might be over, but that just means we're heading into solo/ensemble Region/Area/State contest season, and Spring concert season! Lots more music and playing and chauffeuring and spectating to come! :goodvibes

The band is videotaping today to submit an entry for the Rose Bowl. The kids are ho hum about going to the Rose Bowl Parade. We aren't really a "parade" band but we win our state championship parade contest every year :confused3.

They are trying to decide between the Rose Bowl and BOA nationals :cool1:

As far as I can find, it's not been released what the actual penalty(ies) are. On the marching board, the thought was that it was a timing penalty(ies), but no one has confirmed it.

I do know, that they do a preshow set up. No on the field warm up. The warm up/ set up time is 3 minutes. I don't know if there was miscommunication between the band director and the time keepers or what, but it seems like most think there was an issue with when the preshow was done and the show stated.

I didn't hear of them having any issues with timing at semi-state, so until someone states it, we are all left scratching our heads.

And for the record, this is one of the things I really dislike about marching ISSMA. They are all about keeping secrets. You can't post the scores, you can't post videos, you can't post about oppsies that happen at shows that effect the placement outcomes. Some things leak out, but other things are kept tight in their fists.

The Rose Parade is an incredibly awesome experience. I marched in it when I was a freshman in HS back in 1983. There is such history to that parade, and it has such a neat feel to be there! They usually do a field show competition too, at Pasadena City College (that's what it was called back then anyway), in addition to the parade. My DS's HS band was invited the year before he started HS, so he missed it. They are more of a parade band, so the felt like the field show portion for them was kind of out of their comfort zone. I mean, we do shows, but NOTHING like those you guys post videos of.

Keep us posted!!!

That's probably the case, although we beat B-Wood (& we lost by 30+ points to Springs) - so knows. Yes, there is a holiday parade - but no, we don't march in it... Only Friendswood High School.

Yeah - Texas is somewhat like this - I guess there is a 4a school who was in danger of losing their spot to advance to finals - a review yesterday determined they are allowed to compete but it is unknown what the issue was. It was all kept quiet - I guess that is a good thing, it keeps the focus and blame off the kids.

What might also have accounted for the Indiana 6 points that I can think of besides the ones mentioned: - ineligible person on the field, possibly still on field when the competition started or behind sound board (in either case, staff, volunteer, student who didn't make grades), incorrect use of pre-recorded sound effects/music/voices, props do not meet specifications.

It may have been a timing issue too & exactly where the start of the show began - If I remember reading correctly in Texas UIL, the show officially starts with first note or first step after the announcement finishes. We had an issue at UIL region contest last year, where the timing judge started the clock (also kept on the scoreboard) too early in the announcement and our last note in the show ended with 8 seconds to spare. Any combination of any of the issues we can think of & the points will add up.

I don't have kids in band anymore but I love reading about all of yours and what the bands are doing.

There is an article in today's Dallas Morning News about the Poteet High School band losing their spot in the State Marching Contest. They are a 4A school. I haven't read the article yet, a friend of mine text me about it. Apparently one of the band members failed a class and was ineligible when they marched. The band directors turned themselves in. Sometimes the grading periods and marching competitions over lap.

My cousin has a daughter in the Poteet band. I bet the kids are crushed. They've gone to State a lot and actually won twice in the last 10 years.

Thanks for the update, I'll have to go find the article - at the time I saw the posting on the txband forum, someone was saying they were still in. The later update said they lost their spot and added the student was overlooked in the original ineligible list of band students sent to the director because he was an extra-curricular student running the sound board. Poteet is a great school & great band and that is sad for the kids! Major kudos to the director for doing the honorable, correct but very devastating thing. Very classy!

Txbands forum is also saying an issue with the timing judge but that information may have come from the Indiana forum (very impressive website, too - I might add!)

Gina,

I forgot to add - both of our schools need to win this weekend for our school to go to the playoffs! At least that was the news the kids brought home last night.

Both of which schools -- yours and B-wood? You know I'm rooting for you! :cheer2:

My DS is *loving* only having practice once a week now... Well, until and if the team goes to State again, then they'll have to practice more. But for now, he is thrilled with having free time again! :thumbsup2
