2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

DS did not call home while in China, WAY too expensive. He took exactly 2 photos the entire trip--both from the Chicago airport while they were waiting for their 3rd plane to come after the other two had mechanical difficulties---set them back 12 hours on their trip. He did not take his cell phone to China. They were gone for 10 days and while it would have been fun getting updates every day, it was good for him not to be in contact with us. It was a big growing up period for him. The band directors did post photos to the school website so we did see those.

I didn't think about that- the cost of cell service out of the country. Luckily, we won't have that issue in Hawaii.

I know he won't be homesick, and I really doubt he'll call me. He is used to being away from home, without contact. He goes to camp and is also a camp counselor, so being on his own is not new to him. That said, I still need to remind him of the time difference, so he doesn't scare the crap out of us at 3 am! ;)

I think the band will have a photographer from the local place that does all of the school pictures around here. They have had someone on other trips, so I would assume there will be someone on this trip too. On previous trips, they have posted the pictures daily on their website.

I'm not counting on him taking too many pictures on his own. He took about 10 pictures when they were in Disney in February...mostly of his friends doing goofy stuff!

Well, this is it! In five hours, we will be dropping DS16 off at the high school. His trip to Hawaii has finally arrived! His flight leaves at 6:30 a.m. but the airport is about 2 hours away.

I can't believe the time is already here! He is excited, but really tired, and is coming down with a cold. I hope he can function and hold it together.

He is sleeping right now, and we will wake him up in a couple of hours so he can shower and get ready to leave.

Wow! what an adventure!!!:goodvibes

marcyinPA - I hope your son has an awesome, healthy trip. And looking out my window at all the gray, I wish I was going with him. ;)

Yay! He will have soooo much fun!!! Lucky, lucky boy!!!

Mr. Band Director asked me yesterday if our whole family is going on the Band trip next year to Ireland... I told him we would love to, but the $13,000 price tag will prevent us from attending ;) I will have two going, as DS14 will be a Freshman, and Tuba Dude will be a Senior. $5,000 for the two of them.

Tuba Dude is happily in Concert Band Season! Getting ready for All State Auditions in 2 weeks :scared1: He's still pretty pumped about beating all of the Broken Arrow Tubas at All Districts!

I am HOPING our trip next year will be to Ireland. The kids can do fundraising to pay for their trips :lmao: but if they go to Ireland, DH and I will go. We've priced out trips to Ireland for our family and $2500 is a pretty good deal--assuming it's for a week and covers most stuff.

Congrats on his All-Districts!!

It's over 90 today and my son is marching in the last parade of the school year today. Fortunately, they're not wearing their uniforms -- everyone on the band is wearing red or royal blue t-shirts or spirit wear. The band parents are filling coolers with ice and bottles of water, and bringing along some wash cloths that the kids will be able to get wet and drape on their necks. Why oh why did today have to be the hottest day of the year so far?

The parade starts at 2, but the lineup starts at 1. I hope no one faints in the heat!

Afterwards, I have to run and pick up the pizzas for a party in the band room. School finished up for the kids on Wed., so this is the last hurrah for the seniors.

My DS was so sweet, before their last orchestra concert together, he got a gift for the senior girl who's been his band mentor for the year. We got her a silver picture frame engraved with "Band 2012" and put in a picture from their last band concert (lucky for me there was a week between the two concerts so I could get all this done). He also got her a lovely card where he thanked her for all her help and told her how much he'd miss her.

As of now, and until there are chair placements in the fall, he's the first chair clarinet. I hope he remembers everything she taught him.
