2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

I left the competition early last week, so I didn't see it... but there is a band that has this dragon, sea serpent thing...big tunnel type things... they had Dads behind them trying to keep them from blowing over. This is Oklahoma. Its windy here. That song...the wind comes sweeping down the plains... that is the real deal!!!!!!!!!! Our band has these big kite/angel things... some of them broke in the wind last week.

Our director this morning made a big deal about being in the DOME and having no wind! Such a treat for this band from Oklahoma!

No kidding, but for us it is usually the COLD that we are escaping--but this year we have been in the 80's and 90's most of October . Last year about half of our practices in the second half of the season ended up inside the school-no marching just playing music, because of the weather. This year half of ONE practice all season was inside--well except for a few at the beginning because it was 120 degrees out :rotfl:.

Take a video and post it so we can see it when it happens :lmao:. You are probably right though, unless they anchor them, they are going to blow away. Our last football game had super high winds and they just took out the high rifle tosses and the high flag tosses because they just don't work in the wind. We are inside for our last two competitions this year . Other then the wind though, we have had amazing weather for practices and shows this year.

I am sure one of our moms will be video taping all the performances. I am in charge of taking the still shots. I usually see most of the show thru the camera lens.

I have heard that there was a message sent out to our show choir kids, asking for extra kids to travel with the band and go out on the field and help to hold our 4 panels and the puppet stand in place. For ISSMA, you can not have adults on the field during the show. You need people to hold props, it has to be students. They have upped the wind speeds to 30 to 40 mile an hour. It isn't sounding very good for any of the guard work.

well, i gave it the ol' college try. i went to the ballgame with DD14, and worked the concession stand for about an hour. it was so hot in there, i almost passed out, and i had to leave the ballgame and come home. apparently, i have acquired a stomach virus, likely from the kindergartners i was substitute teaching yesterday. this SUCKS.

BOA changed that rule this year too so only students can be on the field-which I think is fair. At least the judges know it is windy and usually allow for mishaps as a result. It's hard when the weather doesn't cooperate and often gives an advantage to the later bands since the wind tends to die down later in the evening, but not always.

I am so sorry you are sick! I hope you feel better soon!

momof1princess, so sorry you are sick!

Well, word from Saint Louis is that the band did great! I'm so proud of them! I got a quick text from Tuba Dude that it was great, Hard Rock Cafe was great, and he was going to bed. They are going to the Arch today...then back to watch other bands.

Big BUMMER for me. One of my other friends texted that she'd watched the show and it was awesome...watched it LIVE streaming at a music store in Tulsa! I had NO IDEA they were doing that :sad2: I would have gone! Oh well, next time.

They are due to arrive home at 6 tomorrow. Fall Break is Wed-Sun. They have a big afternoon rehearsal on Thursday afternoon and the last Home Football Game Thursday night. Senior night, so they do this cool candle lighting thing after the game. Then NOTHING Fri-Sunday!

Good luck to all who compete today!

BOA is streaming this live and they will have the option to look at them online for $59 (includes all the regionals and nationals). They sell videos of the performances at the site too so if you want a copy you can have your DS buy one.

Do you know which hotel they are at? DD said that they had to wait in traffic yesterday for 40 minutes --in downtown--to get to their hotel because of the baseball game and the protests going on.

They are in the Drury Inn... and I was under the impression that they would walk to the Dome. Sounded like it was right across the street.

I'm guessing that music store paid the $59 for the live streaming. It looks like there are about 5 Oklahoma schools competing. They are probably showing all of them! Pretty cool really.

Lucky them!! Yes, that Drury Inn is right across the street--easy access. BOA assigns hotels so you don't really get a choice. They move you around from year to year. DD posted on her facebook a sign by the elevator on their floor that the hotel respects their guests comfort and promises not to put children, leisure groups, marching bands or circus animals on that floor :lmao:--except all of the girls from their band are on that floor---oops. The hotel they stayed at 2 years ago won't take marching bands any more because they got complaints that they were too noisy at midnight. There were 6 band staying there so, about 900 kids/directors, etc. coming back all at the same time. Even whispering they would be noisy...their loss of oh, about $1,000,000 for those two nights, each.

Home game last night. It was cold here and the stands were pretty sparse. Our team is now 1-7. However the band performed their comp show after the game and it was amazing to see how many people stayed to watch. They got a standing O from the crowd. The wind died down so they could use the stones. (We have stone holders, students or an adult, behind each stone). We have 2 comps, 2 football games, the Halloween parade and a visit to the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame to be on the local morning show at 6 am next Friday! The end is in sight but there's a lot to do.

Enjoy your weekend band moms....

Hopefully it's not this but a school near us had a bunch of kids come down with norovirus and it sounds similar, yuck. Hope your progress continues.

My sons band scored straight 1's at their UIL Region competition today! There were only 2 bands who scored well enough to move on!
They have area competition next Sat. the 22nd. Fingers crossed they score well enough there and then on to the Alamo Dome for State!

Here is the video we shot today. It was 10:30 am and a lot of sun!
My son is the point in the Mexican Hat Dance ensemble and the trumpet player in the trumpet/french horn duet right after!

WOW a lot of amazing bands in St. Louis this weekend. The OK bands had an outstanding weekend, the MN bands, not so much. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Owasso's show. It was pretty much the general consensus in the stands that their show was everyone's favorite. It was just fun. Union was amazing. They tied for second with Owasso but Union got 2nd on the tie breaker. Broken Arrow won but quite honestly, no one thought they should. Union's show was so much better. I was a little surprised that Owasso tied them. Our kids had a great prelim show and a not so good finals show. They were pretty disappointed with their performance in finals.

Was Union the zombies? Or was that Irondale?

Irondale. Union use those black screens that they moved around the field. Our band was the one where the band had all the "globes"--we can't call them balls because telling a 180 high school kids to grab your balls doesn't go over very well-so they have to grab their globes :).

Now that's funny :lmao::rotfl:

DS Tuba Dude made it home safe and sound. Tired. But seems a bit more healthy than when he left. This cold is going to stick around forever it seems. He had a good time and enjoyed seeing all the other bands!

DD came home sick-bad sore throat and a bad cough. She threw up at one of their rest stops but she thinks that was from coughing too much.

I didn't see your band--just the drum majors during awards. Have you seen Union and Owasso yet? FUN shows to watch!!

Any TX people know anything about Birdville's show? They won a caption award for Music GE but didn't make finals. We were wondering what was up with that. Do they not march well this year? They usually make finals at St. Louis. We didn't see their show (obviously).

Next year will be our last year of having kids in marching band and BOA. I decided I am going to watch all of the bands next year...just because. It will be strange not going there after 8 straight years.

I have seen both Owasso and Union. I loved Unions. Owasso's was ok, but not nearly as wonderful as last years! DS said that Owasso changed the name of their show, and changed the show, since I've seen it last. He said it made more sense now and was better. I always say... "If you are a color guard person in Owassos band...you will end up dead by the end." hee-hee Just in the show, of course. ;) I haven't got to see Broken Arrow's show. DS wasn't has impressed as he expected to be.
