2011 Marching Band Season post--already....

We were the featured marching band on our local Fox morning show today!!! It was awesome to see our kids playing their hearts out at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame this morning! They were inside due to rain!

The kids had to be at the school at 4:30 AM this morning to go on TV. They get back to school at noon, eat lunch, go to 4th block. Dismissal is at 2:30 pm and they have to be back at school at 4:15 pm to load up for an away game tonight. It will be a VERY long day! Tomorrow is competition but call time is not until 4 pm. I can't believe we only have this weekend and next and then it's all over for another season.

It's fun to see the kids on tv. Last year when the band was on the news one of the little old ladies that lives near the school called the cops on them :rotfl2:. There was "noise" going on at the school-not that she couldn't have looked out her window and noticed the TV trucks there with the band. The police came and watched them tape the show and apologized to the band directors. This was the same lady that went after one of the band directors with a broom at practice one time. He was up on the hill by the parking lot talking to the kids and he said he noticed all the kids' eyes get huge, he turned around and this lady was running after him with a broom because they were making noise. She doesn't like the band much.

This is our last weekend of the season. It's the regional/state championship. They have the state championship in the afternoon session and then the regional in the evening. They pull in bands from 4 states but not many signed up this year, only 11 bands are coming. There is an ACT test in the morning so that might be why. All 11 bands are making finals :confused3. Not sure why they didn't cut that down but oh well. We will see everyone march twice today I guess.

That's so cool!! How exciting for them! But holy cow at them having to be there at 4:30... :faint:

Tomorrow is the last competition of the season for us too -- the Sam Houston State University marching festival in Huntsville. I am really warring with myself over not going to this one, but it's like a 2+ hour drive and I just really can't afford the gas right now. Plus, my "main" friend isn't going, and I really don't want to go by myself. But I'm told they usually do well at this one (they go every other year), and I hate not being there to hear the announcement when they make finals! :( Ugh. I know it's just one contest, but still.

Homecoming game is tonight -- I'm excited that it's against Brazoswood, because they have such an awesome band! Love getting to see them!

Good luck to the band tomorrow! Hopefully, your football team will have better luck winning their homecoming game than the rest of the conference had for their homecoming games. As far as the "Battle of the Halftime" - that will be a tough one as to who will win. Even though I haven't seen your show, I really like both bands... Regardless, the spectators will be in for two great shows!

Awesome the band was on tv! What a long day!

Hilarious that the old lady chased the band director! We live a mile from our bands practice field. We can here the annoying metronome inside our house. I cant imagine living really close.

We are done with band for the weekend! Its fall break here, no school wed- sunday. The kids had practice from 2-5 and then the game. No practice until monday morning! They looked and sounded ....off last night:confused3. They have a contest wed and sat , hopefully they work it out! Thses are the 'state contests' so we do all of this fun stuff all week. Im to bake 4dozen cookies iced with OBA for thursday evening. Fun!

We have our UIL area competition tomorrow! (top 2 bands out of the 12 competing go to state.) Tonight our football game is against Galena Park, the only other 4A band from our region to go to area. Should be a good halftime!

Thanks so much!
I had so much trouble sleeping last night,I kept dreaming about band!
The kids know if the competition season ends today they had a great year, but my son is a senior so I'd love to see it go on a little longer!

We go on at 3:15, so maybe you could send a little pixie dust about that time.;)

Pixie dust to Nikimouse's band and all the others (including ds) who compete today.

Our game last night was fun to watch...it was a muddy mess, however the team lost 0-40! We are 1-7. And again the band stood on the track and played. Our three majorettes twirled fire however. They are all very good and the one twirls 3 batons...3 fire batons last night. We took first place in auxiliary at the last contest and I think it was due to the majorettes!

We have contest tonight, one football game and state comp next weekend and the very lame Halloween Parade in town and it's all over. :sad2: This season was especially quick with lots of rained out games and practices. Cleveland is the 4th rainiest city this year. I hope that doesn't happen again next year.

Thanks and good luck to your DS and his band!
I like to see majorettes, I loved to twirl when I was little!
Rain you say? We've been in a drought so that is not a problem for us!
Enjoy the rest of your season!

last night was our last away game :( last home game is this coming friday. i'm sad marching band season is almost over.

good luck to everyone who's competing this weekend!

My son's band is on the field as we speak at the SHSU contest... it's killing me to not be there!! :( Finalists are announced at 5:30 -- I hope he texts me the moment they know, like he promised me! :)

Good luck to all the bands in competitions today! :cheer2:

We are leaving in a few minutes to go watch our last competition. We play last for prelims at 3:45, finals start at 7:00--assuming we will be last for those as well. It seems so long ago that the kids were at band camp and now we are done.

Just got a text from my son - They made Finals!! So excited for them! Just had to share with people who understand. :-)

Hurray! Whew, it will be a late night and a long drive home! I hope you don't have much planned for your son tomorrow ;)

Yeah, such a long day for them... I had to have him there at 6:15 this morning, and they're not going to be home until after 1am now. I think I'm going to go take a nap. :) Nothing planned for tomorrow but rest and homework!

Congrats!

Sadly, our competition season ended today. We played great, but Friendswood and Dawson will be representing our area at State.
We have 2 more football games and then playoffs so I'll still get to see them play.
My son is a senior so the season winding down has really hit me hard. :sad2:
I'm hoping they put together another Halloween show. That would be fun!

Here's a video of last years Halloween show!

It was a tough Area F! The competition was made even tougher when only two were selected for state. A Halloween show would be so much fun to do!

That looks like such a fun show to perform! I bet the kids had a ball doing it. I can't even imagine what you're feeling with your son being a senior... Band has become such an integral part of our lives, I think I'll feel lost without it at that point! Is your son going to continue with marching band in college?

I'm so excited -- My son texted me to say that they moved up 4 spots between prelims and finals, and came in 3rd in the competition! SO proud of all of them!! Now to stay awake until I go pick him up... lol

Yes, very tough! And the 2 bands that are going to state are very much a BOA style and most of the other bands were not.
Wes told me last night they are going to put together a Halloween show!!:cool1:

Congrats to your son!
The kids LOVED the Halloween show! They really loved the crowds reaction! Their band director got tons of e-mails and calls from around the area about that show!
Wes took a college day to Lamar last month and sat in and played with the jazz band, met directors and loved it. As of now that is his choice.(It's only an hour or so from here, good for Mom) He is making the decision in the next couple of days about auditioning for the Crossmen!

Mickeymo and Gina, enjoy the rest of your season!!

We got a Superior (I) rating again! YAY! And came in 2nd overall, behind the same band last year, the dreaded Bees. Our kids did great after not rehearsing the show in its entirety in two weeks. We have had way too much rain, which makes for mud on the practice field.

Next Friday is senior night and there is talk of moving the game to the away field, because it is turf. Anyone ever played a home game at the away field before?! I'm not sure of the senior show but I know they chose TimeWarp as one of their songs. It should be a fun show...if they get to march on the field.

Congrats to Gina's son....
