2011-2012 Boston Bruins (Offseason)

PROGRAMMING NOTE:

Tune in tonight on NBCSports (aka Versus) at 6:30pm. It will feature the NHL 36 that stars Patrice Bergeron. At 7:30, the B's play the Devils, who have been showing signs of life lately. Tomorrow night, the Bruins will face the Flames in their last tune up game before the Stanley Cup rematch agains the Canucks on Saturday.

Anyone else planning on eating bad food and having a few bev-ies Saturday afternoon?

All those who were afraid that the New Year's Eve loss might carry over to 2012, please raise your hand...

Ok... 1, 2 3, 7, 11, 18, err.... Ok, put your hand down.

All those who aren't convinced that the dominant team in the NHL right now, please raise your hand...

Put your hands down Hab fans... Ok. Let me take a count... Ummm... Anyone??? No doubters? Declansdad, I can still tell that's you. Please embrace your english speaking coach (By the way, have you ever seen a better chance for Rosetta Stone to advertise?) and hope for Gomez's return. I will say this, Subban (and all players that don't play in Ontario) kinda got a raw deal in the all-star voting. I voted for him. Do you think there will be a conspiracy to draft Kessel last again?

But I digress...

15 goals in two games. 16 skaters have at least 1 point. Only 1 goal allowed in the last 7 periods. In the last 10 games, the goal differential has been 49 to 13 for a +36. This run makes me imagine, what the standings might be if October never happened? But without the back to back losses in the home & home series against the Habs at the end of October, the Bruins might not be playing the way that they have been. So, merci Montreal. Merci beaucoup Tony Marinaro (Montreal's version of JT the Brick) and your hate filled rants.

From a long standing rivalry to a new rivalry, Vancouver comes to town tomorrow. And for the past week, I've been listening to Canuck after Canuck, Sedin after Sedin do their post game interviews and almost direct everything towards this game (btw, I love NHL network. I get to see highlights and interviews I couldn't see 2 yrs ago). Whether they are trying to psych themselves up by saying that they are as tough as anyone in the league and they don't get pushed around; or by playing to the refs and the league by saying they are "hoping" that the Bruins won't play cheap or dirty.

Ok, arm raising time again. Who here would like to see a re-enactment of the scene in Slap shot where they have the opening face off in the championship game?

Ummmm... Slow down people. I can't count that high.

I am not saying that this game should just be a blood bath. But... Aaron Rome has something to answer for and the Sedin's are talking a lot of smack.

Hey, Henrik! So you said you guys are as tough as anyone? Here's your chance to prove it.

BRING IT!

Adendum:

Now, I don't agree with the clothesline. But I still can't figure out why they got on Marchand for ducking under "Danielle" Sedin, who was making a run on him after the whistle. My favorite part is watching Ehrhoff turtle as soon as he turned around and saw the 6'5" skating mullet

In a page from the "I Called It" file, me and a co-worker this morning were talking about the game tomorrow. He was all excited to hopefully see Luongo get blown up again. I said, "That would awesome. But I just hope they don't sit Luongo under the lie that they are gonna let Schneider play in front of the home town."

Well, I CALLED IT! Luongo is sitting tomorrow.

In related news, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have dispatched 20 government sanctioned chiropractors to British Columbia in the hopes of finding the Canucks back bones. The urologists are on stand-by.

Well, you can't say that Saturday's game was boring. It had a little bit of everything. Skill, hitting, saves, goaltending and controversy. Especially controversy. Now, I'm not gonna sit here and blame the refs or any other variable. The end result will be the same. Marchand broke the rules and the Canucks scored twice on the 5min major and the Canucks walked away with 2 pts.

While I won't blame the refs, I will condemn all the post game chest pounding that the Canucks and the Vancouver media have been doing. The way that both have been trumpeting around, you'd have thought that the Sedins had beaten up Thronton and Lucic in a tag team match.

I am the type of person who likes to hear both sides of a story. Especially, if one side will prove me wrong (you never learn anything new by always being right). This is a quote from Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun on Sunday

But Vancouver, whose toughness has been a talking point since the Stanley Cup, stood up to Boston as a team and made the Bruins pay on the power play. That’s something the Canucks will remember, something to hang on to for reference the next time their fortitude is challenged.

I'm sorry... WHAT?!?!

Iain got 1 thing right. The Canucks did make the B's pay on the power play... AND ONLY ON THE POWER PLAY! At which point did the Canucks stand up to the Bruins? When it was 6 on 1 against Thornton near the Nucks bench (7 on 1 if you include Hodgson holding Thornton against the boards from the bench)? Or maybe it was when "Henrietta" Sedin running for the bench as soon as black shirts started showing up? Oh, I know. It must've been when Weise was jawing at Thornton (in front of the ref no less) but when time came to drop the gloves, he couldn't skate backwards behind the nearest zebra fast enough. And the whining he did when he got slapped with 2 min unsportsmanlike was epic.

Then there is this quote from "Danielle" Sedin:

“I don’t think anyone can question our toughness anymore.”

You gotta be kidding me! After seeing this game, EVERY team is going to question your toughness. The only question is, what will you do when you are in another team's barn and even in the Western Conference, you are going to be called out?

But this article isn't totally skewed. MacIntyre has a great quote that sums up the B's perfectly.

"Thornton is the toughest guy on a Bruin team with more tough guys than Sparta."

Just makes me think of the guy at the games that has the 300 themed poster of Leonidas Chara yelling "THIS IS BOSTON!!!"

Tomorrow's another game. The B's face their former teammate Blake Wheeler and the rest of the Jets.

I wouldn't put too much stock in Vancouver winning one game, they need to do it over a series.

Big game later this week, maybe the Habs will even be on a 3 game winning streak. We took our son to his first ever game last week against the Jets. It was a good game to watch for a Habs fan.

As a Bruins fan the one thing I will take away from this game is that we are the most well rounded, 4 line, 5 on 5 team in the league. Stay out of the penalty box and there is no one in the league that could beat us. We just beat ourselves. Way too much adrenaline pumping for that game. I love the intensity, but they need to know when to take it down a little and not take stupid penalties.

I am still confused about that 5 on 3 that led to the first goal, no way we should have ended up short handed after that. At worst maybe one man down. The league has since rescinded the game misconduct on Lucic, so thats a good thing.

This is the first time I've seen this thread. Wish I had earlier.

I didn't get to see Sats game because I was working but listened to it. How on earth did Van get a 2 man power play after jumping Thornton 5 to 1? I know the refs wanted to keep order but did they ever blow this one. That being said I do think the B's played right into their hands when they didn't ease off when they saw the refs were going to call everything that hinted at physical play.
Schneider is the only one on that squad who played honorably, the rest of them are (won't say it). Burrows, Lapierre and the Sisters top that list.

Time to put this one behind us. Jets coming up. GO B'S

I have to say that was the most eclectric feeling at the Garden since the Cup Finals.:cool1:

It took all of about 20 seconds for the Luongo chants, the fights( Lucic GM was bull!!!)
Ok I will give you Marchand's hit, never knew clipping existed in hockey :lmao::lmao:

We may have lost on the scoreboard but we certainly cemented our dominance of such a team of Marys'.

For an off day, last night was fairly eventful.

First, after many hours of deliberation and lots of verbal chess matching, Shanahan finally handed down Marchand's sentence. 5 games. I think that might've been a little excessive. But I can see Shanahan's reasoning (I'm a huge fan of his video reports about why he rules on issues). Marchand is a repeat offender. And in the long run, he may have helped Marchand extend his career. This sentence will carry some weight (and a hefty loss in pay) with the young winger. 3"s higher, and this might not be an issue. But now he has 5 games to look inward. And 5 games to reflect about, not just the 2 goals that were scored on his 5 min major, but how his team will fare without him in the line-up.

Second, is the Van/FLA game. Could Vancouver capitalize on the momentum of Saturday's game? NOPE. Would Luongo silence any critics of him sitting out the weekend match? NUH UHH. Will the extremely vocal Alain Vignault get the win and thus be one of the coaches in the all-star game? NO SIREE BOB. But the immaculate, incorruptable, poster boy for fair play, Alex Burrows, did demonstrate a hidden supper power that I never knew he had. He has the ability to extend his legs to super-human lengths. How else could he cheap shot trip Brian Campbell from way up on that pedestal? SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?! This is the team that wants to play the victim? After 2 days of claiming how the Bruins are meanies and how the Canucks are so smart and play the right way, BURROWS (of all people) makes a stupid and selfish trip penalty (I believe retribution for Campbell breaking up his scoring opp earlier) with 30 seconds to go and Luongo pulled.

Hey Brendan... You may want to look at the that video again.

But the highlight of the night had to be the L.A. Kings' Jack Johnson's goal. Not because it was the game winner. Not because it was his first goal since Dec. 1st. But he celebrated it by "Tebow-ing."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHGcoeSu4Tg

Now, I might be biased just because the Pats are playing the Broncos this weekend. But I think this movement has gotten more out of hand than "Hulk-a-mania."

On a side note, I'm actually impressed with the fan base and the amount of fans that are at the Kings games. You don't see that too often for warm weather teams.

Is there anyone out there that could deny that yesterday was "The Night of Thornton"? First he was a victim of reputation. The refs bust him for a phantom check to the head. But that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He came out of the box at exactly the right time to make a short-handed run on Pavelec, which drew the hooking call that translated into him being able to take a penalty shot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qieRRrtMu6s

I haven't seen a move like that since Charlie Conway.

But that's not all. Next came a fight with former teammate and carpool buddy (the kiss of death on the Bruins).

Q: How do you spell "WHOOPS"?

A: S/T/U/A/R/T

But the capper of the night, didn't even happen live. On Mike Felger's Comcast Sports Network show, Sticks and Stones, he routinely has Shawn thronton on as a recurring guest. But on last night's show, Felger was talking via phone with Tony Gallagher from The Province. A Vancouver newspaper. I can not do justice the exchange. Please click on the link. Whether you are a Bruins fan and/or hate the Canucks, this will brighten your day.

In closing, I found a new thread for hockey fans. The opening post has a video that everyone should check out.

OHHH... By the way. The Bruins won 5-3 last night. :cool1:

Great night for Shawn "The Sniper" Thornton. Now that's the way to get revenge for a bad penalty call.
I don't get to watch "Sticks and Stones" but I did hear Thornton going with that Vancouver toady on "Felger(or is it Fleger) and Mazz". Raw meat in front of the beast.
I just hope they get the act together to have full 60 minute efforts. They can't rely just on the 3rd period when they start playing the Rangers who always seem to give the B's fits.
Montreal next-NO MERCY!!

I think the new mascot should for the Canadiens should a player in the fetal position with their hands covering their heads. No way in that instance should we end up short handed. If a player throws a a forearm shiver to your teammates head and you retaliate, you should not end up with extra penalties. Same way when Thornton got ganged up 6 on 1 and we ended up on a 5 on 3. Makes no sense.

Groing up, there were 4 words that, if uttered, would make lose all faith in humanity. If I was dreaming and I heard these word, I would spring right up in a cold sweat gasping for breath. These 4 words are:

Bourque Traded To Canadiens

Brrrrrrr... Even today, with it being a different man and the original having been retired for a decade and a half, still just doesn't look right. But I'll come back to that later.

Let's crawl inside a young man's head for a minute. You are Jordan Caron. You were just called up to the parent club to Replace Zach Hamill who was replacing Brad Marchand. The puck was dropped less than a minute and a half ago. Carey Price goes behind the net to play the puck that wasn't even there. Instead, it's on your stick and for the next .7 seconds the net is COMPLETELY open. What's going through your mind? My guess...

"OH God... Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!"

But that's just my guess.

Lucky for the Habs, that the B's, instead of trying to get the puck in the net, spent the next 40 min trying to see who hit the toilet seat on Price's chest. Either that or by taking "intentionally wide" shots. Come on Jack. Not every shot that is 5-12' wide of the net is intentional.

So On comes the 3rd period. And Krejci extends his point streak to 10 games. But the reason that people are talking about him is what happened with about 8 min left in the game. Subban comes across ice and hits Krejci in the head with his elbow. Did it look malicious? No. Did it look intentional? Maybe, maybe not. That didn't matter to Andrew Ferrence. He comes over and immediately throws Subban into the boards and then the ice. With this, Subban jumps right up and starts going toe to toe with the Bruins blue liner. Nah. I'm sure this would've been the scene on "Opposite Day". But Subban does his best Marsha Brady "Ooh my nose!" impersonation and lets Ferrence drag him around the ice for a while.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heF3OY2Pnoo

Someone please start a campaign to get Subban traded to another team. He has way to much talent to the Hab version of Sean Avery. On any other team in the league (sans Vancouver), he would be a prime scoring threat (50-60 pts and at least +10) and a respected leader. Up there, he's taken on the flopping ways.

Either way, his ploy worked. The Habs scored on the ensuing power play. A slap shot from Weber that Thomas should've had easily. The next 7 minutes was pins and needles. In the end the B's held on to the 2-1 win and are within 1 pt of conference leading NYR.

Now, back to the Cammalleri/Bourque trade. I didn't notice that Cammalleri wasn't on the ice until Jack and Brick started speculating on his supposed injury. Then the end of the game came, and the story broke. I immediately turned to the NHL network to see what's up. By the way, Kevin Weekes is hypnotitic on NHL on the Fly. Anyhoo... Canadiens and GM Pierre Gauthier was back peddaling the questions like he was on an eliptical. But my big question would be this...

"Was Cammelleri traded because he called out the team for being losers? Or, was Cammelleri traded because he called out the team for being losers, in english?"

He was traded because it is time to free up cap room so they can sign Price and maybe find someone who can actually score.

What is the Bruins problem with Carolina?! Totally sickening.
OK, I'll admit I didn't see too much of the game because of the Patriots, but I was flipping over to keep track. To give up 3 goals in their period(3rd) when they had the lead just kills me. I know they weren't going to keep up the pace they were on all season and every team has bad stretches, but c'mon,

CAROLINA!!!

The B's now have 41 games under their belt. Unfortunately, they are going into the 2nd half after a loss in Carolina. But, we've seen the team respond to reality smacks (ie losing the home and home series vs the Habs). We can only hope that Cam hasn't stopped yelling at them since the horn sounded. And the whole basis of that fit would be "Playing the full 60 min".

The B's are not going to get the gaps between games that they had in the 1st half. So unless they are planning on getting commuter rail cards from Providence to Boston, they are going to have to button up. You just, can't give up the game winner on the road with 90 sec to go. Now, I'm never 1 to say play for the tie, and I know that puck moved more than a kangaroo on Red Bull, but you gotta prevent that shot from even getting off. The 1 positive note from Saturday night was that David Krejci was able to extend his point streak by assisting on Lucic's goal.

41 in the books and 41 to go. New York still has the conference by 3 pts, but the B's got 2 games in hand. We have to hope that they can turn those 2 games into 4 pts and try to secure the top spot.

As for what I had previously said about Subban, I now have to reserve judgement until "Spit-Gate" is resolved.

2 games in God's waiting room, 2 mediocre performances.

They started off the Florida run playing the SHOCKING Florida Panthers. Like has been their style lately, they have been playing way too much "Get a goal. Give a goal" hockey. If you are the last team to score, you walk out with the 2 points. However, that's a big IF. Luckily the B's were, this game. Though all of the regulation scoring came from 1 source; Patrice Bergeron (robbed out of the All-Star game). He really stepped up this game and carried the rest of the team. He'd stake out his ground in front of the net. He was disrupting passes in the neutral zone. And he was pressing the blue line in the defensive end. Not to mention, bursting on the break away opportunities. But dispite his efforts, after regulation and 5 min of OT, it came down to a shoot-out. Not exactly a Bruins strength. When the B's were down 1-0 with 1 skater to go, Bergie got the nod. Once again, he put the team on his back and carried the hopes. BANG! Goal. In the 4th rd, Samuelsson missed the net opening the door for David Krejci. Krejci had, had his his scoring streak snapped at the end of OT, squeezed the puck into such a tight square on Clemmensen's left... It was a thing of beauty.

Game 2, 90 min southwest of the House of Mouse. Before the game, Nathan Horton was called out by Julien. How did Horton respond? he scored 2 goals in the 2nd period... That's all. Who here thinks Claude should call out a few more? Also in this game, Paille, once again, demonstrates his incredible speed. Earlier in the game, Paille had a break away opportunity that Garon was able to defend. Fast Forward to the 3rd period. TB with the man advantage, and, again, another break away opportunity. This time, Paille used his head instead of his feet. Once he new he could not be caught, he slows himself down, and lifts it back hand.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8ehBkTaFg4

Sadly, after this goal, if you wanted to see any life in someone wearing Boston colors, you had to look at the Bruins fan who beat up the Bolts' mascot for being silly stringed.

Tonight is a new game, for a few reasons.

1) The Bruins/Devils games are always amped
2) Marchand and Peverley are back with the team
3) This is the last road game of this trip before they come home to play the 1st place Rangers
4) Could you imagine the yelling fit that Cam had after that game?

I predict a 5-2 game.

In closing, I already said shame on the NHL for not giving Bergeron his due. The best 2way Forward in the game right now. But I'd like to congratulate Big Z on being named an All-star captain. Any bets on whether there are any Canucks or players name Kessel on his team?

Well BDL you almost had it right.
I usually miss the third periods of games due to the time I have to get up in the morning. I think I turned the set off about 30 secs before Ference scored. I'm watching a replay on NESN right now.
Big weekend coming up with the Rangers on Sat and the Patriots on Sun. Let's hope for a doubleheader.

3.6 seconds away from a weekend victory hat trick.

I'm not saying that the B's would've won the shootout, but it just hurts to be that close, (a man down) and lose that opportunity in less than 4 sec. and because of that major, The team will be without Ferrence for 2 more games. But for the 60 min before that, it was the exact kind of back and forth game that you would expect from 2 top ranked team. Both Lundqvist and Rask were on their games this day. A couple of times you could see Tuuk go "Timmy" (Thomas, not Tebow) by coming out of the paint and using any body part he could to make a save. He just didn't have enough arms, legs, hands, feet, etc, to make that last save. And I swear, when that goal went in, I thought that he was gonna "Tuuk-out" like he'd do in Providence. But at the end of the day, the B's still left the Garden with 1 pt.

That 1 pt would come in real handy the fallowing day. Now I have to make a confession. Due to the fact of the Flyers being chincy and not giving the Bruins request to move the start time of the game to not conflict for the New England audience, I was buring a hole in the "Last Channel" button on my remote. But I did witness all of the fights (all of which were called for in my opinion). But what would be shocking to me, would be when I'd come back after about 5 minutes and there would be a 2 goal swing one way or the other  . But this game was an all out, slobber knocker of a game. Talk about "no quarter asked, none given". Both teams were zipping up and down the ice. Giving their bodies and giving their all. Some may have given too much. If Hartnell doesn't draw AT LEAST 3 games from Shannahan for his shoulder hit to Kelly's head, that's a crime. So, now we come to the shoot-out. An aspect of the game that used to be the weakness of the 2010-11 Bruins, is quickly becoming a strength on this year's team. Thanks to Krejci, Seguin and Timmy, the B's leave Philly with 2 pts and a tie for the Conference lead.

The B's and Rangers each have 1 game before the All-star break. Should be interesting. Speaking of the All-star game, I think it is funny that Kessel's line mate Lupul was named Chara's alternate captain. I can see this conversation happening as the draft progresses. "Z... I don't want to pick him either. Any way we can trade the pick?" For next year's All-star incarnation how about we make new teams? One team will be all Canucks and Phil Kessel, and on the other team, players that other players in the league actually like.

And even though this is a Bruins thread, I'm gonna go personal here. Congrats to the Pats for winning yesterday. But more to the point, the tributes, that each player to a man, made to Myra Kraft. I had met her and Bob on many occassions and had done work on the Krafts' property. They are both class acts and down to Earth people. Myra was an amazing and strong woman. She would talk to anyone and was a fighter for anything that she believed in. And that shone through in the testimonials we heard yesterday.
