One of the ways we are getting around the "Balcony Roulette" problem is to just request "ground floor". We have worded our room request "Sofa in room on the ground floor" in hopes that our Garden View room will come with those two things. Since we are "Garden View" I figure the patio on the ground floor will have the same "garden" view as the upper balconies.
What we really need, for my husband who has sleep apnea, is a recliner so that he can sleep semi up right. He is sleeping in a recliner at home on the nights where he just can't endure the pressure from the apnea machine. His other thing is to sleep on a sofa where he can't roll over on his back so that's why we are requesting a sofa. We figure if there is no chance of a recliner, a sofa is second best.
At night I never know where he will be sleeping. On more than one occasion I've rolled over and felt around the bed to see if he is there and I've come up with the dog instead! Our Collie Dawson is ever the opportunist!
